  1. thats not what season ticket holders were told by the owners of the club or the manager and his team.

we was told without a shadow of a doubt that promotion was the aim from the off,and anything else would be classed as a failure.

hence why there is so much resentment at bp regarding performances by the players and the manager.

the odd 30 regular posters on this board cant influence anything really regarding how the club is run(no disrespect meant here),but 2k season ticket holders not renewing because of broken promises and lack of progress can.

if anybody still thinks were in a wrong division and we deserve to be in a higher one, then yeah, there deluded,we been here for over 10 years, anybody who cant see that for what it is shouldnt be watching up play.

Can we really survive in the Championship? It's a similar situation to us going into the old 1st division when we did. We don't get the crowds to support a Championship side. Most of them are getting around 20,000. Our redevloped gtound will only hold around 16,000, and we would probablt attract an average of 9,000 at best, and that's because some away teams would be bringing 3000+. To be absolutely honest I think that this division is the best we can hope for, with the odd excursion into the Championship followed a season or two later with relegation. We simply cannot compete in signing players at that level. We struggle where we are now. I don't like to admit it, but that's how it is.

  2. I am not convinced that we will ever see him in a Latics shirt, would be nice to see him but I don't think it will ever happen. He has far to much class and if and when he leaves Utd then there would be a Queue of Championship and Premier League clubs lining up to sign him.

I doubt that he would play for us, but if he did it would be magic Obviously the money wouldn't matter to him, but the frustration of playing with inferior players may get to him. At Utd the other players are on the same wave length and make runs he expects them to make, and don't waste the ball when it's passed to them. That wouldn't happed with us

  3. For what it's worth I thought Livermore was our MOTM yesterday. And I think Constantine is getting better with every game, it's just a shame we our merely getting him fit for Leeds' playoff push

I've said before that Hull fans can't see why Livermore has been allowed to go. They only accept it because they are hoping to get someone in who can push them towards the Prem. However the kid they brought in from QPR is proving to be useless. Livermore has been holding down a regular central midfiel place at Hull, but we need cover elsewhere. He would be a great signing for next seasom IMO, as he is a good utility player.

  4. Was just about to write something similar. I think we missed out on signings at the end of last season as we had to play a couple of extra games and didn't know which division we were going to play in etc. Even if we make it into the playoffs, there's no guarantee that we will make it up anyway.

Playoffs, don't forget, also bring in extra cash, which may enable us to get one more player in, or pay that bit extra to secure other players.

  5. I'm probably wrong but I have a feeling that rule only applies in League 2 at the moment.

It's 40% of income for League 2, and 60% for League 1. I'm not sure it's enforcable though. There doesn't seem to be any structure to fine a club who goes over the limit. What I don't understand is what figures are these percentages based on? Annual accounts? Or estimated income for the current season?

  6. This is not a get Shez out thread!!!!

Shez is becoming a laughing stock IMO, no passion, no contacts (outside Sheffield). I have heard a number of things over the past few weeks I am not happy about. I am sick of hearing "he is not my sort of player" " I could have taken him" " we just didn't turn up" he should be supporting the kids at the club rather than knocking them in the paper and putting a call into Sheffield. I am quicky becoming annoyed at his attitude, comments and his general arrogance, I think he thinks he is being clever, but he just makes people dislike him. Everyone thought Shez would be the answer, im not too sure.

Getting the impression we have blown a great chance to get out of this division. You can blame injuries to a point, but you have got to place a big chunk of the blame on poor tactics, bad team selection and inept ability in the transfer market. The kids have been the big plus point this season and thats about it, we are only still in the mix up because this is a very very poor division. If RM or BT was in charge now, people would be going mad.

    Thoughts please.

Shez says the wrong things IMO. He gives us point targets and number of games to win, but doesn't seem to be going for promotion. Perhaps he doesn't want to get peoples hopes up when he knows that we aren't really consistent enopugh to do it. Other players come into management and do well immediately. Others fail, and most are mediocre like Shez.

Robson must be the most overrated manager in the game. Always getting good well paid jobs after failing at every previous club. I see that now he finally seems to be finished, Utd have given him a job.

  7. This was in the Daily record today.................................................................

Gretna Captain Set To Leave For England

    Mar 15 2008

    Gretna In Crisis...

GRETNA captain Paul Murray could be offered an escape route by Oldham.

The midfielder is wanted by the English League One promotion play-off hopefuls.

Murray, 31, will be available for free if Gretna fail to pay off their debts. The entire first-team squad have been told their contracts will be ripped up if the Raydale Park outfit close.

And Murray could be one of the first to find a new club.

Boundary Park manager John Sheridan could use the unexpected availability of the former England B international to bolster his squad ahead of the run-in.

Murray signed a one-year deal with Gretna last June and has made 23 appearances for the club and scored once.

He has previously played for Southampton, had two spells at Carlisle and once landed a £300,000 move to QPR.

Gretna are awaiting news from FIFA. Clubs are not allowed to sign players in March and after.

  8. I agree. I even thought we had no chance anyway with sodding kasper!!

As you said, we'd have a number 1 goalie instead.

Why did we have no chance with Casper? Foster was apparently lined up to go to Coventry, but Ferguson stopped it because United had both 1st and 2nd choices out. If Foster had gone then Casper could have played for us. It would be better than playing in the league he's in.

  9. Was he though? Granted He was very good in his first stint here, and probably saved us from the drop that year, along with Croft, but what has he done since? imo int this years stint, he didnt stamp his authority on the game like we know he can and imo wasnt half the player he was first time round.

In all honesty i reckon he is an above average player for this level, but not outstanding. I would take him back with open arms, but i wouldnt break tha bank for him.

Ronnie Moore is under the impression that he saved us from the drop, but I agree it was KK and Croft that saved us, and Moore didn't bring them in if I remember correctly.

  10. Me personally would think that were going to just miss out as I don't think were good enough to make it. Hope I'm wrong though..

Just done the predictor and we ended up 6th with 72 points. We would be playing Carlisle in the playoffs, and Forest would play Leeds. We would then be able to get revenge on either Leeds for the first ever playoff defeat, or Forest for the League Cup Final.

Lets hope it works out this way!!!!!!!!

  11. Pretty much like Bournemouth, this isn’t the sort of game you would want JP in for. It’s one thing playing him for backs against the wall matches, but not for the games we should be looking to dominate. Sadly he is as good at breaking up the flow of our attacks as he is the opposition’s.

    Jarrett's fit as well.

  12. Beresford is no spring chicken either. Number one priority in the summer has to be a keeper. Crossley's finally gained some consistency but the injuries have plagued him all season. We need someone aged between 23-30 ideally. Someone with a bit of experience and a bit left in the tank.

Agreed, but I don't think we'll be able to pick one up in that age range on loan. If we could I'm sure Shez would have done it. Beresford will be OK until the end of the seasion. and maybe as No 2 next season, to a new No.1

  13. Is this another example of Sheridans lack of contacts out of Yorkshire? Not having a pop but I am gobsmacked by his comments this week. We loose Pogs and Crossley, then you tell the press that Josh Bell isnt good enough for the first team at the moment?!?! WTF. What will that do for the lads confidence if called upon, and Shez, 'where are wealth of keepers if needed' that you mentioned to the press a number of weks ago? Best case tomorrow 2-0 win and Josh Bell has a blinder.

    Have a think shez!!

Shez said when Pogs was officially finished that he would stick with Crossley, because he could always get a goalkeeper in on loan. No idea what he was thinking of, because he's struggled to find one in the past. What made him so sure he could just pick up the phone and get someone in right away? Beresford would have been my choice, but he's not likely to play against his own club, even if he's available.

  14. Wolfy's had time? How many starts has he been given?

How can a guy prove himself if he isn't given the chance? Sheridan doesn't have any faith in his ability. Wolfy gets the final 3 minutes of a match we've already won, if he's lucky. I've seen more potiential in the glimpses of Wolfy than I've seen in Smalley, full stop.

Woly isn't stroong enough for pro football. He's to easily brushed off the ball. He'll probably be sent out on loan with a view to a permanent signing to give him a better chance than waiting until the summer.

  15. Gotta agree with you there, it is a cast iron banker that this git will score, probably at the Chaddy end too. Won't be spectacular and will most likely come off his arse, in fact it I can see a long punt from their keeper finding its way to Moore then him celebrating as if he has just scored the goal of the centrury.

Pity Gregan isn't playing. No doubt he would like to take care of Moore.

  16. League 1:

    03/04 - 7505

    04/05 - 7740

    05/06 - 7460

    06/07 - 7485

    League 2:

    03/04 - 5390

    04/05 - 4500

    05/06 - 4060

    06/07 - 4134

Hardly a downward trend, and in all cases, higher than 1999/2000 or 2000/2001.

Can't really go off figured like these. It all depends on the clubs in the league. At the moment we have Forest and Leeds topping 20000 every week at home, and increasing support at away games. Replace those two with Scunny and Colchester and the averages will plummet.

  17. Personally don't think he sets a good example to our youngsters with his attitude and certainly don't think he would walk back into our back four.

No, he's not going to walk back in to the back four, but it's only a matter of time before one of our centre backs get injured. I know LIvermore can cover for now, but it's just our luck for both centre backs to be out at the same time. It will be weeks before he's fit though.

  18. If we go up this season, can we stay up? If the redevelopment starts in the next few months then we will only have a 3 sided ground and a capacity of around 10,000. This is not the best way to start a season in a highr league. A lot of money would have to be spent on the squad to make it a side capable of competing. Trotman was outstanding for us, but cannot get into Preston's team. Scunny have come unstuck and look like dropping back down, because they can't compete. Briostol have done very well, byut they have cash, and Blackpool have made some really good signings, both last season and this. Maybe they have a better manager than us as well.

  19. can some one comfirm for me did hyypia ever play for latics as i once seen it in a fanzine

Sharp on Radio Merseyside said that he had bumped into Hypia at Anfield, Hypia asked Sharp if he was sorry that he hadn't signed him after his trial. Sharp said that he had asked Ian Stott if he could sign him. Stott agreed and Sharp left all the details to him to sort out. When Sharp heard nothing after several weeks he asked Stott what was happening, and Stott said tht Hypia had changed his mind about joining us. Hypia told Sharp that he hadn't changed his mind and was willing to join us. Either Stott or Hypia were telling porky pies.

  20. From "Where are they now?"

    http://www.webservicesbc.com/latics/Aj.html

"Jimmy Frizzell (1960-82) was a great favourite of the Latics supporters. When he was sacked he had the distinction of being the second longest serving manager in the football league. He is now chief scout for Manchester City F.C"

Didn't he do a bit more than this?!? Like a couple of promotions...

There was a demonstartion at the civic centre when he was sacked.

  21. Who have come back to score against us. With Warney playing against us on Saturday we got to talking about former Latics players who have come back to score against us. We came up with:

Luke Beckett on more than one occasion

Michael Ricketts this season for Walsall

Ian Marshall for Ipswich in 199?

I'm pretty sure that Wayne Andrews has put one past us at some time.

That was all we could come up with. Anyone else?

    KtF

Denis Irwin for Utd. when they beat us 6 - 3. If I remember rightly they went 2 up at half time. We pulled 2 back, then they ran riot.
