  1. This thread has gone tremendously off-topic but it's fantastic.

I used to glass-collect there when I left school in 1992 so fortunately I got to see plenty of Sexy Sue (And unfortunately Stan the Man, her other half). I picked a copy of the Sunday Sport once and she was in there in all her glory but for some reason as Charlotte from Workington or something.

Spent a few nights in Dreamers, Monty's and Butterflies of course. Dreamers was a great club, the only place you seemed to get quite good music. Scruples was absolutely hideous and I spent a couple of decent nights at Club 57 (Now Tokyo's) just because you could get in with trainers and it was quiet, cheap and you could play pool with no hassle.

Further afield there was a club on Market Street in Shaw. I had a nasty experience in there, where I went down with a bunch of mates. I went to the toilet but when I emerged, it had kicked off while I was in there and all me mates were ejected and were on the front street. Anyway all I heard was "He's one of 'em" and something slammed into the side of my head and I was promply dragged down the stairs, given a few boots by the doorman and came round in Oldham Hospital with busted ribs and ringlet/lace prints to the side of my face. I think the club may have been called 'Heroes' ironically enough.

Didn't Alex (the Hurricane) Higgins own what is now Tokyo's for a time in the 80's?

  2. It closed years ago Bob. Thursday's used to be grab-a-granny night and great fun if you wanted to learn a few new tricks.

As for Dreamers, it didn't matter if you were so pissed that you couldn't see your watch. You knew exactly what time it was because of the track they were playing.

    Happy daze. :)

What about the Bird Cage in the Cats Whiskers. Used to spend many a happy hour staring up the dancers skirts from the ground floor.....

  3. Blimey, this thread's taken me right down memory lane.

Ro's and Jo's, Butterflies, Over the Rainbow were the main haunts in the early days.

Then Scandals (as it was over 21s for a while, I seem to remember). Anyone remember the ageing bearded geezer disco-dancer in the suit and white shirt open to the belly-button with the dodgy hairy chest who used to eye up all the much younger girls in there? And the 'Mad half hour'? I once went there dressed as a Hare Krishna after a fancy-dress do and had the sheet ripped off. Bouncers were all for chucking me out 'cos I was half naked, but fortunately some kind soul lent me their jacket, which seemed to satisfy the bouncers.

Spent a lot of time and money in Dreamers too. Great place but I never worked out what the entry criteria were. You could be dressed up decently and sober as a judge and be refused, then go the following night in jeans, trainers nine or 10 pints to the good and be welcomed with open arms.

There was another place further down nearer to the bus station, the name of which escapes me. Had a good few nights in there too - must have been good 'cos I can't remember the name of it.

Only went to Bali Hoo once - awful. Same with Henry Afrikas. Lasted about 10 minutes in the Candlelight before doing the off.

*drifts off in a haze of nostalgia*

Montys was the one further down towards the bus station. Or it could have been the Bus Stations club... The Pennine Lounge.... Getting in Dreamers all depended how Tommy Heffron was feeling on any particular night. If he'd had a bad day you could just as well get launched down the stairs!!!

  4. I think it was part of it. There was certainly a hotel there anyway.

I know that I used to go there in the mid 80s. When we didn't go to Smokies; Scandals; Dreamers; Grays; Butterflies; Bredbury Hall etc, etc. :)

And don't get me started on the Manchester Clubs.

I must have pissed away a small fortune over the years.

Pips disco under the Cathedral. Bowie Room and Roxy Room........

  5. I have a funny story about that game.

I was walking back up sheepfoot lane after the game and the Geordies had been locked in the RRE.

Some of them were jumping over the wall at the back of the RRE and fighting with the Latics (I wasnt involved of course).

Anyway to cut to the story......

This guy was walking back to his bike as he must have been parked at the carpark at the back of the RRE.

As he walked across the back of the RRE a Geordie came over the wall and confronted the "Biker" , the guy never flinched he then hit the Geordie over the head with his helmet , sparked him out cold and then just casually walked on as if nothing had happened.

    Quality !

I hope he didn't use that helmet again. They're no good after a collision you know!!!!

  6. 'ere we go:

    Adapted Desperation Samba lyrics

    Full moon in my eyes

I wonder how in the hell I got here

    Without a disguise

Should I take this last step

    Or turn myself around

Or follow my intuition into that border town

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham [i want to dance in Oldham]

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos [...with our friends]

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

    Pretty girls they beckon

    From their rooms above

    Skeletons are dancing

    In the name of love

    Don't know where I'm goin'

    I don't like where I've been

    There may be no exit

    But hell I'm going in

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

I hear the people singing that same old haunting tune

I drink because I know it's me against the moon

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

    -- Spoken:

    "Tss, tss tss"

    "Hey, psst amigo!"

    Ooh ooh ooh ooh

    Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

Yo quiero a bailar en Oldham

We do the desperation samba con nos amigos

you've got far too much time on your hands!!!! B)

  7. So the thread turns - it's nothing to do with the way we play - would people who saw us vs carlise have thrown in the towel after it?

No. It's about a lot of distance aways and swansea's form, nothing else. Yes people would have gone to chelsea, it would have been a big occaision, but the same people might just go to a differen away that they might not have done, but it'll be split across 5 games, rather than pushed into 1.

And the missing 1500 wouldn't have gone to any game other than everton and chelse.

I had talked our Doris into a trip to swansea on Saturday but when I got out of bed at 6.30 there was four inches of snow on the car outside. I bottled it and went back to bed. I have freed up my weekends now so shoud be able to swell the away numbers by 1. Its not about distance most of the time. It's about having the time due to other commitments (which have been impossible to get out of)

  8. I don't think he can, any season long loans needed to be done today. He can go for 3 months when he is fit though.

I'm gutted as i am sure we were planning on him going, hope this doesn't screw any other deals we had on going.

He's a professional Footballer. He should get fit, get back to BP . Pull his bottom lip in and fight (not literally) to get back in the team.....

  9. we didnt win with killer we didnt win with bertrand we didnt win with clarke we didnt win with rachubka.

what im saying is why hasnt the deal been set up with a first refusal like beckett? and dont say 'how do i know it hasnt?' because they would have said if it was.

I think that as loan signings both Bertrand and Kilkenny were successful, particularly Berty. He was never going to sign a permanent deal with us even though he said he had enjoyed it up here. Kilkenny is a decent player who should be able to ply his trade in the championship so I can see why he went for Leeds at the time. That might just backfire on him this season though. Wouldn't that be nice?

  10. Could it be anything to do with the surface around the edge of the pitch. I've seen several players slip on the blue stuff around the pitch. It looks like blue tarmac but i don't think it is. I know its a long shot but as a previous poster said. even our better passers of the ball seem to have problems with corners. It might be an unconscious thing on Taylors part. If you think you're going to slip you arn't set up properly.

  11. Loan signings are a win win situation to my mind. They give (usually) a young player the chance to improve their game. The club they are loaned to a chance to have a look without committing and to get a good player in (e.g.Bertrand) for a period of time to help out etc.

  12. Quality performance, passing to feet, competing in midfield, strong at the back, bombardment of chances at their goal, couple of the young lads became men.... Brilliant. Shame about loosing Hughes so early.

Eardley was the one down side for me, what is going on with that lads passing. Hot going to go on about it, but I think he needs to pass the armband to Allott, who was immense tonight again. :)

Agree about Allott... He was running at the defence at pace. Good to see....

  13. worst carlisle performance since thier conferance days according to radio cumbria.

    Fantastic...

Do you know why they were bad..... Because the Tics didn't give them a bloody minute. The closing down from front to back was immense with players twoing up most of the time in defence and playing quick ball into feet in attack. Forwards held the ball up brilliantly for midfield to come on at speed, hence McD's two goals from midfield. Carlisle did not have an answer last night and it feels good.......:grin:

  14. Doesn't necessarily have to be a big man either, after-all the Dodger wasn't the tallest, but often his flick ons at the near post paid off. Think set-pieces is something we really do need to work on. Variety is the spice of life and also the key to sucess. Feeling more positive than I have done for months (Everton and Leeds were good but unlikely bonuses) games like last night are the bread and butter and to put in the performance we did after Saturday's debacle gives us some hope. Young Lewis looks a hell of a prospect but we need to use him sparingly for now and beef him up a little. The lad has the best feet and close control I've seen at BP in a long time.

The goals will flow if we do what we did last night, good passing high-tempo football to feet.

    Yeeeeyyyyyssssss :grin::grin::grin:

  15. he makes a good point though, players have come back stronger than ever that we have doubted,

we all doubted lomax and if he would ever get back in the squad, but look how well hes been playing!

give him the chance and worst comes to worst we still got more cover

What Thompson needs is competition for his place. That usually bucks a players ideas up. Sadly trotman going reduces that competition. On a better note. Lomas' attitude and application have introduced more competition back to the team.
