I was sat directly in front of the lad who was thrown out. I have no idea what he was thrown out for. Surely to be thrown out for persistant standing you need to be told to sit down on more than one occasion. He was not. Even when asking him to leave no mention was made of persistant standing. A few minutes earlier Latics & England had been bluntly told to stop taking photos with the words " One more photo and you're out" I would have thought that "Excuse me sir, taking photographs is against ground regulations, can you please put your camera away" would have been a better way to approach the situation. In what other situation are you treated with such lack of respect as a paying customer?
Everyone involved seemed to be learning as they went along, from the bus drivers to the stewards outside the ground, turnstile stewards, ticketing staff. This is understandable in a new ground and there are bound to be teething problems. I get the impression the stewards were eager to put their newfound training into practice, by ejecting someone. They will certainly have learnt lessons from yesterday. They will rarely have a better behaved away crowd all season, but they somehow managed to create an inflammatory situation. If he was thrown out for persistant standing, the end result of the stewards' actions was that many Latics fans stood for the remainder of the game, with similar numbers then standing in the Colchester end.
Treat fans of Millwall or Leeds that way, then ask them to stand in a queue full of home fans poiltely waiting for the shuttle bus. It doesn't bear thinking about.
The stewards at the end were laughing as Latics fans were angrily putting their point across. This was the final straw for me and I said a few things to the stewards that I'm not proud of. I should have stayed calm and not reacted as I did. If this caused any offence to any Latics fans I apologise.
