  1. The MailOnline states: "Steve Thompson resigned as Oldham Athletic’s interim manager after his position became untenable. The 58-year-old spent just three-and-a-half weeks at the helm, assisted by Neil Redfearn, and left the Latics following a meeting with the club’s hierarchy on Wednesday."

However, they don't say why his position became untenable!

The Oldham Times states: "Thompson left after a meeting with board members on Tuesday and will not be returning to the club in any capacity."

Sorry if I have missed it but where does it say ST has left the club?

It says "left their position as interim management team" So this should mean he has gone back to his original job doesn't it?

"The Oldham Times understands that he (Thompson) will not be returning to his original role with the club."

Oldham Times says we are “closing in” on the new manager and hope to have them in place by Rochdale.

"The club received more than 60 applications for the Boundary Park hotseat, with the board carefully considering all candidates before drawing up a shortlist that is understood to have included Micky Mellon, who won back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two with Tranmere Rovers in 2018 and 2019, former Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer, as well as Steve Thompson, who as interim manager has overseen a six-game unbeaten run."

Think the Bunn rumours were started by the Barry/Fake Barry twitter account.

Can't find the account now but I'm sure he tweeted last night that player power had won the day and that Bunn now won't be appointed (which hints that Thompson will be appointed based on his previous)

This may, or may not, be Barry Owen's Twitter account @Gaz_Oafc

He (Owen?) seems to have started a rumour one day and the next day he says it's not happening!

However, this account is constantly criticising the board, OASF, and the administration of the club - suggesting splits in the hierarchy as well. It reads that he prefers the previous ownership!!

Barry Owen tweeted last night that Bunn's appointment is virtually a done deal but the players want ST.  Not sure if he is ITK these days or just talking through his fleece.  Make of it what you will.

I understand that we don't know if 'experienced' managers such as Micky Mellon and David Artell have applied for the job, but what selection criteria has been used that puts Frankie Bunn ahead of Steve Thompson?

Personally I don't get the "must have experience at this level" rhetoric.  Our two most successful managers in living memory, Jimmy Frizzell and Joe Royle, had no experience of managing at any level.  Full stop.  To counter my own argument I would also add that some of our worst managers (hello David Unsworth) had no experience, and it showed.  So yes, experience is an advantage but I'm not sure it's the be all and end all.  Experienced managers can (and do) fail, and rookie managers can (and do fail).  Just depends on the manager involved.

Dean Holden, Darren Kelly, David Dunn?

Personally, my hunch is the club will bring a new man in after a thorough process (another 3-4 matches down the line). The job may even be dependant on a new manager accepting ST is retained on the coaching staff. Whatever it is, it's a good scenario for the club in that they can take more time to decide whilst on the pitch stuff isn't creating any more pressure for the board.

This is a repeat of Wellens he had blistering start, then all went wrong, I honestly think Thompson and Redfern and Murray all love the club which is so important they deserve a chance I'd still wait another 3 games see how it pans out though.

Thompson's mini run takes a bit of urgency out of the situation.

Now that Thommo has thrown his hat in the ring, like a few others, I'm torn as what to do next. However, there's no harm in waiting for at least another 10 days as we've 3 matches up to 7th October.
