Incorrect, and I'll tell you why.

The higher up you go, ball retention increases as players skill levels do. In the Premiership, yes the players are fitter - you're right on that count - however, they will not waste energy chasing down what's perceived as a lost cause. If you have a Premiership player on the ball, and an opposing player 10 yards away. If he chooses to charge directly towards the ball (a high press, for example), an elite footballer can easily in an instant turn that to his advantage with an incisive pass into a dangerous area. This happens far less often in non-league, where the high press tends to result in a loss of possession more frequently. Hence, why most of the teams in the top ten employ this tactic to good effect.

So to relate it to Harry Vaughan, whilst he is good on the ball, he's a far more effective player at Championship level than at National League level as a player at that level tends to have on average 3-4 seconds longer on the ball. Yes, he could play the incisive pass when pressed in our division, but his peers are not on his level and will more than likely mis-control the pass that's pumped at them, ending up in a loss of possession.

This article is a really good way of demonstrating it in more detail: https://theanalyst.com/eu/2022/04/how-does-the-style-of-football-change-as-you-journey-down-the-english-football-league/

Interesting. We'll never know if he'd have been as/more effective at this level though... He never got a fair chance.

me too. l think it comes from Stevie G for England? just a theory that. l never wore lower than 7 so l didn't really look..

l bet you were number 10? maybe 11?

    Ha. I did wear 10.

Think I always based it on Latics' 91 team. Probably the last time I even looked at things like that. Henry at 4.

Assumed how it was then was how it would always be. Wrong on many levels.

You get far more time on the ball in the Championship (and Premiership) because creative players are light years ahead in skill levels and they move the ball around much more precisely to feet. So if you're a lumbering midfield player (an effective one, like Wokings, Borehamwood's etc) you'll get skinned in half a second with two passes as soon as you attempt the high press. Therefore they stand off when you have the ball and only use the press when judged right.

It's basically why Harry Vaughan was used sparingly by four managers at the club. He's a fantastic talent and we may have used him more if we were a L1 club.

He's still only 19. It was right to use him sparingly for the most part.

This season he should've got more games. Sheridan regretted not giving him more... Unsworth...

If I've got a player wrong I'll be in a long list including better judges than me who have.  In my opinion Vaughan did nothing in a Latics shirt to suggest he'd push on higher.  Currently in his cameo appearances for Hull he's proving me wrong.  I'll still reserve judgement he'll make it at that level.

I do think a lot was expected from him given how early he was in and around the first team. He never quite lived up to it and didn't ever get the run he probably needed.

You could always see he was a gifted footballer though. His touch and the way he moved was miles better than owt else we had.

oh fuckit. it won't be the first (or even the twentieth) time you have regailed us on here with a load of bullshit tale you pretended somebody told you in a pub!!!

sorry. it was wide open and l'm bored 🤣

Spoke to George a couple of times in Marsden. Think he's got dementia Unfortunately.

Always asks for a tab. Apparently his wife died a few years back. Well known for just wondering around those parts.

He did tell me the same story each time... He used to tell the opposing winger that "the hospital's over there". When they'd ask why... He'd say "cos that's where you're ending up".

Think it's getting easier for a prudent, well-run and stable club to smash through the leagues. Easier than moneybags teams who often squander their investment and traditional 'big clubs' who have been run shambolically, anyway.

I think the step up from Championship to Premiership becomes the bigger barrier now, especially given the parachute payments reducing it to the same 3-4 clubs yo-yoing about.

Having said that. Personally I'd not enjoy a Premiership return. Or at least, my enjoyment would be tempered massively.

I like the positivity on here in terms of our potential at the moment. For years on this site, people have been saying we're tinpot and destined for sub 4k crowds until eternity.

Mentions of it, but i’m sure league 2 clubs have to agree, and if thats the case they won’t vote in favour of that surely? Unless there is some other incentive etc.

You'd think it'd just be 24 teams for and 24 against if it was just the clubs voting. 18 months ago we'd have been well against it.

I'd be pissed off if I'd got the money together to take advantage of the early bird deal only to find that they then extended or re-introduced it later on.

Knew this argument was gonna come. In all honesty though, you bought because you could. Has anyone really put themselves massively out to save themselves 70 quid?

I do get the point but it might be beneficial to the club and your fellow fans to extend it. Surely you wouldn't begrudge that. I've "lost out" being a ST holder previously but have never been arsed. I chose to buy it.

£350 is still a good deal (if we're better than last season!) and anyone waiting until August has another 3 or 4 paydays to get the cash together.

A flash sale for a week at early bird prices after a couple of good signings might be worth considering though?

I would be pissed off if I'd paid full price a week before. Either extend or don't. Prices are fair either way and I don't think the club have done anything wrong.

Could make good business sense to extend though. Maths ain't a strong point but 1000 at £290 is better than 500 at £350.

Just don't get the desire for the club to rigorously enforce the deadline. Doesn't make a difference.

People have had enough time since they bought their last one to save.

Don't disagree and the club aren't out of order if they don't extend the deadline. If they did though, the only people it'd (positively) impact are those who bought later and saved themselves a few quid.

Reminds me of the 'in for a quid' etc. No skin off anyone's noses.

Because it’s weak to move it when they have set the deadline. We have moved it historically because we panicked. If you extend it, you may aswell just have that as the price and scrap the “early bird” tag.

And why not? Position it as a gesture of goodwill in an uncertain economic climate. It's an easy write up.

  12. Anyone know how Vaughan's transfer worked? Speaking to a Hull fan and he was raving (started the last 3 or so).

He was on a professional contract and not solely due compensation?

My guess to him (because he thought they'd poached him from the Youths)... We gave him away and added a massive (30% or so) sell on clause. Purely guesswork on my part but he's of the opinion he'll be being watched in the non-too-distant.

Anyone know how it actually worked?

There's stuff I don't like about the Wrexham story - the high wages, the shithousery/diving etc. But ultimately they're a fan base who's gone through awful times for a long time. So when you see some of the videos of them celebrating it's hard not to feel happy for them and to feel that as fans they've earned the right to some success. They're a proper traditional club with a proper history and Reynolds and McElhenny do come across as genuinely invested in it all.

Exactly how I see it. Just gutted it wasn't us as the story would've resonated as well (if not better) to the general public (town decline, previous Premier League club etc etc).

At least they are a proper club and it isn't Salford or Fylde etc.

It seems to me now that anything and everything is Unsworth’s fault. It is getting tedious and repetitive. He’s not my favourite manager and has hardly set the world alight but IMO the constant and seemingly endless barrage of criticism aimed at him is way over the top!!

If you think Vaughan should've played more and not been sold, who else do you aim the criticism at?

Blaming Unsworth for not playing him when two very experienced and at times successful managers didn't pick him either......

Even if he wasn't ready to be playing week in and week out, he should've had more chances and we should've looked to tie him down and get him in the side next season.

As soon as he got the chance to back up his theory that he wasn't good enough, he stuck the knife in.

Just seems very self-motivated to me.
