7 goals in 18 games (a goal every 200 minutes) is a fairly poor return…
Reid by way of comparison has scored 4 in 12 (a goal every 104 minutes)
Ax I said, I have yet to see that Norwood …
Bloke deserves a medal for scoring 7 with Shelton and Sheron behind him...

What’s the problem with Dickenson out of interest ?
I don't really understand this one either. He's got five goals in the league already...

They wouldn't pay Yarney half of what Raglan is getting and Sutton won't be seen again. I'd say Unsworth didn't fancy neither of them wouldn't you?

Rochdale played a 17yo against us last week who looked a great prospect yet we send the best youth I've seen here in 20 years Alfie Atherton on loan to Burscough, where I hear he's been sensational.
I doubt if Mellon has ever seen him play so he should recall him immediately.
He's a fast direct right winger who can dribble past opponents and send over excellent crosses. Exactly what Fylde had last night and we need.
A lot stronger than Green too.
Why we are frightened to give youth a go and rely on slow immobile players beats me.
We know of several youths who never got a proper chance here are now with higher clubs, it's a poor policy and needs changing. To lose Atherton in this way would be a disgrace IMO.
He's only been there a week. Let's not get ahead of ourselves...

Just a reminder that we'd won 5 and drawn 2 going into this one. Let's not get too dramatic...

One swallow doesn't make a summer and all that but you do wonder why T & U signed Raglan when they knew Big Mc was coming back.
Maybe they thought it was sensible to have cover for the bloke who'd had two major surgeries, been told he might not play again, and hadn't started a game for a year?

Indeed. I think, especlally this season, some of the football might be attritional at times. He be under pressure from the off and will need results, or at least to match the 45% win ratio he's bobbed along with throughout his career. Should we be in the same division next season, I would think he'll have more wriggle room to build a mentally tough, physical and dangerous team. The last two matches suggest we're nowhere near mentally tough or physical. I'm expecting a complete overhaul in midfield (probably via loans) and wouldn't be surprised if one or two 'luxury' players will be out of favour quite quickly.
I've had chance to think more about this appointment. It's a calculated decision from the board. They clearly want a man with a proven track record at this level and also the one above. He's a good play-offs man, given both Tranmere ones came via that route and this season, realistically, is about the best we can achieve. He was the only candidate who stood out who has that success in the bank. Even if it doesn't work out for him, I can't fault the board for picking him out on this occasion. It's worth noting that he picked out Jamie Vardy when he was Fleetwood manager so he's certainly a good judge of a player one would feel.
Fully behind the appointment, even though I'd perhaps not have gone for him myself.
He also picked out Kyle Jameson for Tranmere...

Sounds like it's Mellon... doesn't massively excite me, to be honest - but could be worse.

Came on at half-time, too. Dylan Fage also scored in the same game.

I think the Board deserve some credit here. They backed the manager, gave him time and budget, and were prepared to defend him and give him the chance to put things right.
But ultimately, when it became clear the situation was no longer salvageable, they were prepared to make the tough call to take the financial and personal hit of sacking someone they clearly respected.
Perhaps there's an argument they should have moved sooner - but we're still only 9 games into the season, and I'd far rather have a Board with some patience than the kneejerk reactions we've become used to over the last ten years.
Good luck to DU. It didn't work out, but on a personal level I've got nothing against him. He'll learn from this, I'm sure.

The intentions behind it are a little different. It wasn't an offer the club felt he would accept or indeed i believe wanted him to accept.
It's the same wage as his initial pro deal. That will be a pittance.
Would you have offered him an improved deal based on the
performances he put in...?

Wouldn't say they failed at Portsmouth tbh.
Two mid-table finishes in League One with a Portsmouth side that had finished in the top 6 in two of the previous three seasons?
Not exactly anything to write home about. He was sacked when they were 12th - clearly the Board didn't consider him to be much of a success.

I'd be tempted by Dennis Kutrieb...

That was three years ago. They've also failed at League One Portsmouth since then...
Don't think it's completely out of the question. Football wouldn't be pretty though.

As a side-note, I've yet to see anything from Willoughby to suggest he's good enough at this level. And I still don't really rate Sutton at full-back... He's too slow and the limited chances that they created all came down his side.
-
First-half we were dominant without ever really creating anything. Second-half was a prime example of why just desperately throwing random strikers on is never going to work... We took off our only two creative central midfielders and lost any control we had of the game. If neither of them could play the full ninety, one of them should have started on the bench. And the bench should have contained options across the pitch - what's happened to Freeman, Tollitt, Hope...? The latter two would at least offer us something a bit different.
Hate the idea of sacking managers this early into the season, but I'm really struggling to think of another manager in this league that would be getting less out of this squad than Unsworth at the moment.

Not the type of player for us apparently, but Freeman and Dickenson are.
So good that he's been on the bench the last three games...

Would be absolutely bonkers to back the manager to the extent they have over the summer and then sack him after one game...

Not disputing that - but he's not exactly Kevin De Bruyne when it comes to creating chances...
