The fact we still talk about him says a lot. . However he doesn’t get anywhere near being our best since JR.
He was and is very capable, as many have said he was very good at PR. We bought into his bullshit, and then when we realised he didn’t really mean ‘one club one dream’ it stung. However the football (the bit fans really care about) was for the most part bang average. Apart from the two month spell around Oct/Nov culminating in the 3-0 away win at Rochdale. After that the many faces of Lee Johnson appeared and the wheels fell off.
Ive been to 4 games since Wellens took over, and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed those a lot more than anything Johnson served up. The football is far, far superior. In fact I’d much rather watch a Shez, Dowie, or Wellens side, before LJ.
He got results with us in a very similar way to Ronnie Moore did, pragmatic, percentage football. How do we remember Ronnie again. . ?

Well played.

Wellens first 12 League Games
P12 W6 D4 L2 Pts 22
Match or better the same run we’ll have played 33 overall with 48 points needing a minimum of 22 from the last 13 games. I can’t see it tbh - especially if we lose Doyle who’s scored almost a third of our league goals.
wellens has averaged 1.83 Pts a game over a season that’s 84. However he’s only going to manage 37 games this year so that same 1.83 x 37 equates to 60 and I expect us to be around the 60-64 point mark.
if you take into account our points per game over the full season so far it’s around 1.24 meaning we’ll be around the 57 point mark but as I’ve said I can see us doing better than 57 and our usual 17th.
The opening 9 games has killed a play off push unless we replicate Apr-Nov ‘90 and sept ‘06-Feb ‘07 or the start to 08/09
‘90 we had Ritchie and Marshall
06/07 we had Porter in the form of his life assisted by Warne
08/09 we had Hughes
Doyle or someone similarly prolific is the key. Even then we are likely to fail BUT it’ll be fun trying!
This is is what we need to emulate to get into the play offs
25 games remaining...
‘90 P20 W13 D7 L0 Pts 46/60
06/07 P25 W16 D6 L3 Pts 54/75
08/09 P25 W13 D8 L4 Pts 47/75
That’s very reasoned and probably spot on.
But fuck it. .

With this squad, I really think we could finish top 8/9. Still more than enough points to play for.
With changes to the squad, probably mid table. Which after our start, and considering our obligatory position for the last ten years would still be some achievement.

Oh god. . .
Is that all that’s left Dave? ?

Wellens has been exceptional given the circumstances that he started the job in, but the reasons I'm not giddy about our prospects has nothing to do with him. Sadly there's no guarantee about the state we'll be in post January on or off the pitch which is dampening my expectations for the season.
That said, what a result today and I'm genuinely excited by the football I'm likely to witness when we head to Plymouth in a fortnight!
I get your point. (I want Corney to go, or to move on etc etc) But the whole ‘where is club going’ is becoming tiresome for us all and getting away from the main event. Which is, the football is cracking. WE ACTUALLY SCORE GOALS. It’s a bit of buzz to go again. We might- just might do something. Its been 10 years since we played anything like this. (shez first spell)
I just think the whole point of why we support the team is getting a bit lost in the mystical boardroom drama.
We’re 16th after an awful start, we’re 3 points off 9th! ? Let’s all dream, or talk bollocks about very slim play off chances.
Otherwise what’s the point?
-
I’m surprised there’s not more misplaced giddiness at the general direction since Wellens took over. I know we’ll probably finish mid table, which would be great from the start we had. However we’ve been so shit for so long, that any glimmer of hope of doing something (which I think we have) gets me looking at the table.
Am am I on my own?

3 points off 9th. .

What a result. Happy days.

I love our ability to turn a raid on the club, into a whimsical, light hearted, ‘who cares what’s going on, here comes another pun . . . ‘
Over and over again.

Currently on 16 between them - just for the record, we hit our 16th League Goal last season on 28th January against Bradford City!
My 32nd season this and in that time we've only not had a player hit double figures on THREE occasions. TWO of those have been the last two seasons...wow!
Whilst it’s true we’ve had at least one in double figures for the majority of those seasons; sometimes it’s been a midfielder, and rarely has it been a recognised front two. (Apart from Ritchie and Palmer who did it for three seasons) Since them it’s been barren to say the least.
These two could be both in double figures by the middle of November if not before.
Happy days.

His gold brick is more than enough.
Excellently put.
I think his PR has been has truly awful at times. The decision making and way the club has been run, (or left to others to run) has been so bad it’s comical.
On the other hand, IMO Corney always tried to back managers. We constantly run squads of 25 plus- even when we were really in the shit. IF (and this is key) the takeover is on a sound footing, and we can move forward then tbf to him he’s done what he set out to do. Keep us going until a good buyer has been found.
In the end, we could of done worse and he could of run things better.
I’ll call it a draw.

Everybody's position on this board is already well known, go and have a look at the hundreds of threads devoted to the subject.

Mods, lock this one up.
Why on earth would they lock it?
Don’t involve yourself in the thread if the discussion isn’t for you.

If recent developments are true, and Abdullah buys Corney out completly, it will end a long association with the club.
So how will Corney’s time be remembered?

It has been a long time, so long I could not name the last good pairing.
Keeping Doyle is a priority even over Byrne.
Even if our form becomes more erratic over this season knowing that we can always score at least one goal will make all games interesting. The last few seasons if we conceded a goal the game was usually over right then.
Yeah, spot on.
It’s great watching Doyle, with that air of envitability that he’s going to score. Davies has genuinely surprised me, i knew he’d hold it up but I didn’t think he would be as clinical as he has been. He’s been superb.
-
IMO your only as good as your strikers.
For so many seasons we’ve either had nobody, or one half decent to decent striker. I can’t remember the last time we had two up top who are so dangerous/prolific
I’ve watched so many sides over the years who’ve come to BP with a similar strike partnership, an just looked on in envy.
If we can keep Doyle in January. I think we’ll do more than ok this year.

The last line is all that matters, people will pay to watch good football.
Agreed. Although I’m gutted, that is a massive step forward and all we’ve been asking for- some entertainment.
-
Even though it’s a point away from home, and we’re still unbeaten. It’s hard to be anything other than really gutted.
I knew I shouldn’t of started looking at the table.

If only this site had a competition where users predict scores, goal scorers and a few things more besides, HT scores and attendances.
Oh wait http://www.owtb.co.uk/forum/78-owtb-prediction-league/
Most of the money eventually goes to charity too.
What if I give to other charities, and I used a thread about an upcoming game to ask what people thought the score might be in that very same game. Is that ok? Or do all predictions and chariatable donations go through this thread?
Thanks.

Predictions?
In light of recent performances, and a renewed sense of optimism I’ll go for,
2-1 latics. Doyle with a brace. ?

He certainly bucks the trend of the strikers graveyard. .

Ok. .
Did you enjoy the football under him? Personally I didn’t. Like I didn’t under LJ. However I fully understood that’s what they felt was the best way to get results.
Shez first spell, Dowie, and Wellens see it very differently, and their sides reflect this. They also had more relative success. I’d much rather watch their football, but each to their own.
