maddog
Open Question - If you saw a Latics fan getting beaten up by opposition supporters, would you help them? Personally, I would be disgusted if anyone didn't. I probably would, but I probably shouldn't!
Matt
This is getting blown out of proportion. By some reactions on here you would have thought weve got some super hooligan firm who kicks off at everymatch. One incident and everyones running for cover. (cue the slagging off) I posted earlier in this thread a similar comment - as it was in danger of raising the social status of the hooligan element, however I reckon it has evolved into a wider debate.... rudemedic
Open Question - If you saw a Latics fan getting beaten up by opposition supporters, would you help them? Personally, I would be disgusted if anyone didn't. What people have to accept, we don't live in a fairytail land and incidents like this will happen. I think the lesson to be learnt is that the policing should of been better outside the ground. With Huddersfield having a better escort to the town center. I would help them but since i wouldn't rate my chances in a fight (especially in my glasses) i'd try and make as much noise as possible to attract people's attention. This actually happened right in front of me at Barnsley when i was about 11/12 and my dad kept beeping his horn and rang the police on his mobile (despite them only being 100yds away) as a bloke in an Oldham shirt got the preferbial s**t kicked out of by about 4/5 Barnsley guys (after they had pulled him from a car). Having said that there have been cases when members of the supposed firm 'run' leaving those that don't run in a spot of bother and these are people who are going to football with one objective being to get into a fight. I do entirely agree with you though that its not just a case of not getting into trouble (and punishing those that do) but also better policing and stewarding at games. SAV
A fantastic question, and one which everybody probably has a different answer - and one that isn't quite as clear cut as it first appears. However, preventing the assault in the first place makes the question redundant. Fight or Flight? - there are options - there is a choice. There are certain consequentials that an individual works through to keep safe. Our built in natural risk-assessment facility weighs up any situation for instance - you make the choices given the predicament you are in. A female should not walk down alleyways at nightime. It's not because she will get attacked if she does, it's that she is increasing the risk if that choice is made. Your own risk assessment of a situation could reduce the threat of an attack. Don't forget that the same rules of risk assessment apply to an individual who is witnessing somebody getting a kicking - apprehension is only natural. I remember(just),When somebody caught me with a cracking left jab when it went off in the looker upper against the citeh massive a few years back

I think the lesson to be learnt is that the policing should of been better outside the ground. With Huddersfield having a better escort to the town center. Surely it'd depends on what they've done to get themselves in the situation. If they've just been attacked for being an Oldham fan then i'm guessing most people would help (Even if you think they're a ****) - same goes for if it's a mate. If they've gobbed off and got a smack for it, they'll learn a lesson. Personally, I think most would even though you sometimes act on instinct (though thats only really when you know the person i've found), way up the situation. There's loads of people who will do anything to avoid a confrontation for whatever reason and wouldnt join in, in any situation. Mates or not. It's peoples own prerogative. Neither right nor wrong. I've seen too many have a go hero's who've ended up on their arses in the past. Myself included in Cyprus three years ago when a load of Cypriot lads groped a female friend of mine. We didnt stand a chance but neither me or the one lad I was with could of looked any of them in the face the following day if we'd not said anything. Only me and another lad against countless numbers of tooled up Cypriots. All we had was a couple of peices of southern fried chicken and the girls high heels. There was a few English down the road who wouldnt come to our aid. Couldnt blame them really given the numbers and they didnt know us. Couple of Shoeless Mancs we'd met and got pally with did come running out when they'd been woken up by one of the girls. The other lad had been kicked about that much he ended up being chased through a monostry next to the hotel - so we ended up walking to the monostry next to the hotel to try and find him to see even more of them sat there with baseball bats and knives. We ended up walking past them, the mancs asked if that was them but at that moment in time looking for my mate went out the window and so did the Mancs if they where honest. I just said no and luckily we were left to go and he was sat in the hotel room before we where. If I was one of the English down the road who'd seen everything that had happened, I doubt i'd of helped either if I didnt know the person. Anbother scenario I recall is Years ago outside a chippy on Oldham Road in Rochdale. A grown man was having his head booted like a football over some owed money. No one in cars stopped. There was myself, a mate and his older brother in the chippy (The old Greek City next to the Plough pub). Me and his brother being about 14 at the time didnt want to know, so the elder brother went outside to try and at first calm him down - seconds later he ended up licking concrete himself. You cant blame people if they dont want to get smacked for something that doesnt involve them.

That was so long ago... To be honest it depends on who you speak to, as to how the incident unfolded

Two Part Answer really, 1st Part would be if i didn't have any Children (no matter who's they were) and if the person getting the kicking had brought it on himself, but i would still certainly think about it. Yes I would and have. Playoffs away against Blackpool we were all staying over in a B&B near Bloomfield Road. We were sat having a drink in the bar of the B&B watching the cup final, i just happened to glance out of the windows to see a Latics fan and is Girlfriend get a smack of two blackpool fans. Went out and help the guy and his girlfriend out. I would for any Latics fan no matter who they were or if i liked them or not. 2nd Part If I had children with me, then i would certainly have reservations as no kids deserve to be subjected to that. Kingofdikebab
If a Latic's fan was mouthing off and got a beating they deserve it. If someone sets on an innocent fan who isn't looking for trouble I'd try and intervene be they a Tic or any opposing supporter. As for the numpties who feel I was silly trying to comfort my wife......................cheers for the advice lads. Next time I'll tell her the Oldham and Udders fans will be kickin ten bells out of each other and there won't be a copper in sight. Many thanks. KOTK Im sure that if I told my wife that, she would be worrying for 90 Minutes and on the phone every 10 to see if I was Ok. I to would tell her the exact same thing as you did. My wife is a worrier and I make no apology for trying to put her mind at rest during the game. I'd do the same if we were on a plane that was about to crash.
