Chairman and MD speak

Recommended Posts

On World today we've got an exclusive chat with Simon Blitz and Simon Corney. We're sure it will make interesting viewing.

It'll be interesting to find out if the Chairman says anything which can be linked back to what he may have read on OWTB, as I noticed 'newyorkboss' was logged in on Sunday night and earlier today.

Committed to the budget this year, next year there is the opportunity to pull it inline with one or two of the smaller budgets in this division - pressure from the economic downturn was the reason hinted at. Could be a concern longer term - we might have to accept being a mid-table self-sufficient club?

January - sound as though a decent offer for a decent player will be considered. "Been burnt before", and could allow 2 or 3 other moves that the manager wants. But Manager needs to be looking / preparing for the possibility and be ready to get other players, though likely to be loans not full deals "try before you buy". Worries that we could see Taylor et al off in January window no matter how well we are doing.

FA Cup "Worst draw we could have got". Last season bitggeest achievement and dissappointment in 3 weeks - I know how he feels.

Attendances - they wanted 5500 last night minimum, so presumably happy. But the 9000 at the last home game linked to a discussion about..

the Ground - generally it was financially beneficial to demolish the Lookers and not have to pay for upkeep. Not going to fill the ground (Leeds perhaps) and therefore a good deal. New stand on hold until global credit situation changes.

Crossbar challenge - a bit of a laugh about this, and free ST for everyone if nobody hits it? Or did I mis-hear?

Overall - its fantastic to have such open and honest owners who I generally believe are in it for the long term benefit of the club. The finances of the globe at the moment may mean a slightly different path than anticiapted 18 months ago.

Did you mean in the Championship?

No.

I think it was very much a comment on next season if we are still in League One and that they will have to look at the budget. It seems to me that they are spending more than is probably sustainable for them given the change in the financial markets - but they are not doing so badly that they cannot maintain the committment they made for this season. Next season would be a differnt prospect and they may have to reduce the budget next year if we are still in League One (hinted at that no long terms signings on 3 yr contracts in January because they cannot guarantee they could sustain them).

Obviously if we get promoted then the financial situation will be a very different one e.g. increased income but with pressures from increased expenditure. What they would do in that situation is up for debate. The lack of a 3rd stand would really start to hurt gate income against a number of teams in the Championship.

Yes indeed!

Championship clubs will get millions from the new BBC TV deal (they are showing some games live for the first time), so there is every incentive for achieving promotion this time.

Blackpool is a case in point. Karl Oyston is a tight-fisted chairman who runs the club on a strict budget, with no debts. They have a business plan for surviving financially in every divison from League 2 up. Our present capacity is similar to Blackpool's (around 9200), and while it makes sense for them to develop their ground in Championship, they have only now started rebuilding the south stand (for home fans). Away fans will still be in Gene Kelly stand for some time to come, until East stand is redeveloped, with no time plan. Away capacity is restricted to under 1800 (due to go up to around 2400 with addition of further temporary structure, but nothing done about it yet). They have increased seat prices substantially this year, typically from £18 to £24.
