Back from my jollies

Recommended Posts

So two weeks away and our team-building has escalated in earnest.

We've already done Purdie and Worthington to death but here's my take on the recent arrivals.

Jacobson - Well we've been crying out for a specialist left-back and despite his injury problems I think we've gained a real asset, captain of the Welsh under 21s and providing he stays fit hopefully he will solve a problem that Shez never really tackled after the retirement of Charlton.

Greegs - Ok, Seany Boy polarises opinions. Yes he's a big headed so and so that blames all and sundry for his own age related shortcomings. BUT he is still one of the best at our level and despite his tough spell when he was in and out of the team from October onwwards, he was probably our most consistent performers at the back end of the season and if we're not able to get anyone at least on a par with Greegs, then give him another year. BUT I want to see a team player not the bully we have increasingly seen and that is coming from one of fat arse's biggest fans.

Abbott - Yes his injuries have been a problem over the last couple of years, but the guy is quality. I remember signing an injury prone striker in the summer of 1987, he had his periods out injured here too but he did rather well for us didn't he? I personally think Pav needs stability, he was bombed out of Hudds, didn't settle at Swansea and had injury troubles and the off-field shenanigans at Darlo with admin etc...If we can get him fit and chomping at the bit we will have got a real bargain and a new cult hero to boot. Can't wait to see him in blue!

Furman - I'll be honest I know sod all about the lad, I hope he's not being over-hyped and I do ask for a note of caution. Kieran Lee arrived last summer to a similar fanfare and through whatever reasons - rightly or wrongly failed to establish himself as a regular. Having said that he seems to be highly rated and I hope he can solve our lack of creativity hole in centre- mid. Intrigued by this signing and very much looking forward to seeing him play.

The speculation?

I'd offer Haining a deal IF he can prove he's up to it and up for it! Two things Will brings to the table is that he wins headers in both boxes and is good for a few goals and a threat from set-pieces. Something we've lacked since he left.

As for Hughes, difficult one. I've made my feelings clear in the past. Decent striker, but is he more trouble than its worth? Unless Penney can control him I'd say stay clear. The fact he hasn't a club yet speaks volumes for his standing in the game imo. Another one who polarises opinion, yes he's good for 20 goals but any deal would have to be on our terms and if i'm honest I wouldn't be surprised to see him remain at BP.

In conclusion the squad looks a lot healthier than it did 3 weeks ago. But whether we can truly mount a challenge remains to be seen. However I do think we will be at least competitive.

Good post Prozac, although I don't agree with everything you say, generally a good summary of the signed players and the potential signings.

Bloody Hell, Homer!!! This is not good, I'll have to side with you and also say this is a good post because you beat me to it.

We all know the two things that Will brings to the table...

As well as those he can also throw a ball a reasonable distance but stopped doing this, possibly related to his injuries. If he has sorted his back trouble out he could hopefully fling a couple on to Pav's head.

I prefered Trotman's long throws, as there was more chance of him managing to run fast enough to also head it in when it got into the box.
