Blitz: Stadium on proposed Failsworth site is on track

Recommended Posts

Do you know what corp I think I have become so de-sanitised due to bad news on a social scale from the people supposedly (and I use the term so loosely) running the country that I think football is my only escape.

Then I see campaigns asking us to "respect the ref" whilst they have become more officious, less easy to communicate with and of a generally lower standard than in previous eras, when what surely should be happening is that communication in a respectful manner should be encouraged.

And even worse than that it now looks like the club that I actually felt part of for 35 years is heading down hill and there doesn't seem to be a lot I can contribute to stop it.(I think this is the beauty of supporting a small club).

Looks like I'll have to find a new interest/club for me and my two year old ;-). Maybe Rugby is the answer, any fake blood lying around anywhere.

I'll stop rambling now

I did ask about the old Gasworks site at Hollinwood to be told that it was considered but the land was/is contaminated.

I'm just helping with construction of a light industrial estate on a former 10 acres gas works site, very similar to Hollinwood. Remedial work for land reclamation was about £1.5M (which was considered reasonable in the London area because of land values), but the big issue is that remedial work on a gas site takes 18 - 24 months, because they use bacterial agents to break down the polution. So stadium construction could not even start for 2 years and it seems TTA would not wish to wait this long ...

whether i have or havent, its not what its supposed to be and transport is horrendous. however awe inspiring a 90000 seat venue appear as you first see it, on the whole its not that great.

i was a bit harsh in saying 'crap', i meant the whole experience including prices and food and all the like. i suppose if i took the stadium on its own, if i could teleport in and out, with my own food, oblivious to the location and forget what it was supposed to be like, i would say it was 'good'. but i cant, so its not.

So you have not been to the stadium yet your going to make judgments....

The facts are:

  • while some of the food is expensive (£7.50 fish and chips) it also the best food I have ever had in a stadium
  • access to beer / food is quick an easy
  • drinking in the terrace bars around the stadium is awesome
  • you have tons of leg room
  • there isnt a bad view in the place
  • the atmosphere is awesome....when you have decent fans that is
  • its the national stadium...London is the capital...get over it
  • transport is awesome to the stadium I think.... National express coach service return from manchester works really well
  • the only thing it dosent have which would make it "perfect" is a roof and to be frank it makes no difference to the sepctator so I dont see the issue...been there when it was pissing down and didnt get a drop on me...

but please...feel free to bitch and moan....

800m though.....800 very very large ones.....jeez...

I do really really want to go though as I have heard nothing but good reports....only slight downside seems to be atmos at England games - but that's a fan problem, not a stadium problem.

Move/Don't move; 12,000, 16,000, 20,000 or more; Oldham, Failsworth or some bits of the Oldham area I have very clue about the location of which, frankly it doesn't matter. How big was Maine Road when we beat Citeh at it 2-1, or how about Elland Road when we've beat Leeds at it 3-1 and 2-0, the City Ground, Nottingham, Hillsbrough. Or how about this Valley Parade (currently hosting league 2 football), the McAlpine/Gayfarm/whatever it was called then through some sponsorship deal or whatver when it was hosting football in the League below us. Shrewsbury's stadium is being touted as being the sort of thing we are looking at- what division are they in? Oldham could be playing in a stadium of Wembley proportions raking in the money with concerts, conferences, 24h casinos and clubs it doesn't matter if the people on the pitch are naff (although if we did have 90,000 supporters we wouldn't be naff for long probably).

Making a bit more money through a stadium which is in use for more than 50 days a year (our home games, the rugby and select reserve games) is no good if we decide to spunk that money on some idiot who isn't good enough. Or letting our star defender leave for 300k when Leeds are getting double that for a 16 year old (and its quite likely to rise to 5x that) who hasn't played for their first team. England ladies u19's as i was being constantly told whilst watching the senior ladies team loose are playing in some championship or other- where are they playing is it in London, Birmingham, Sheffield no its at Bury and Rochdale- why do Bury and Rochdale host games like this instead of us.

I'm sorry but TTA are not the business geniuses some people think they are (or if they are they can't run a football club for anything more than toffee- for them its all about the real estate). They have made some bad decisions and not learnt from them- where was this plan to move to Failsworth whilst 2000 Latics fans marched through the streets of Oldham to protest at some bogus council decision- judging by the ineptitude of the council it would have only cost £2000 in a brown envelope to get the planning permission first time round (maybe more but you get the idea), we could have been 7-8 months further down the line and we wouldn't be playing in a 3 sided sandcastle.

Instead of spending all the time on the building of a new stadium to try and make money from the land of a football club try working out how to get the football club some football success as it would be easier to fanny around with Plan X (which didn't exist until 3 months ago) to try and make money if the club was in a stable position in the league above.

Doctor. Whilst I've got your attention - what treatment do you advise for shin-splints ?

PRICE (Pain Relief, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). If you can't rest- try a change of footwear or walking on grass instead of the pavement (if possible). If you are a jogger/exerciser that is key (as I presume you don't live anywhere near a beach as sand is the best surface to exercise on to prevent shin splints and other overuse injuries)

Disclaimer: As I'm still 9 months away from qualifying (I hope) and another 12 months after that from being fully registered all such advice is just that it is not 'approved' medical advice.

Hmmm...rest...makes sense, but it's a pain in the arse. Some, erm, less reliable sources have advised I 'run through' it....it's skipping at boxing that's done it...puts a lot of pressure on your lower leg muscles...

Running through it is possibly not the best idea (especially in a boxing ring)- that's how people end up with stress fractures. If you still want to boxing train try skipping in your garden (if you have one). My disclaimer still stands- you may want to have a word with someone who actually deals with this problem a bit (or is fully qualified)

100% correct oafc0000 -I went for the first time last week. I went to the RL Challenge Cup final. Stadium excellent (but could never justify the expense). Atmosphere phenomenal! Everything works really well. No lines at entry or bars. Great transport links. Someone can critcise the cost or the sport, but never the venue.

And as a side note for those youngsters who want to hate the "egg chasers" ... I was born and bred in Oldham and was proud to support ALL Oldham sports. It always was, and now still is, a magnificent occasion to go to Wembley for the Challenge Cup Final. And what is particularly great is to see that it is a "big day out" for ALL RL northeners (both those that come down and those who live locally). I was in with the Warrington supporters which added value, but the place was filled with supporters from all RL clubs all wearing their home club shirts(including Oldham), and all happy side by side. Football could learn something from it, and I would be VERY happy if the new ground also becomes a home for Oldham RL!

Cheers Doc. I won't hold you to any of it....I'm just trying to get a few opinions.

Hamilton was in the Chron tonight saying he wanted talks with the council and Latics about the new stadium...I too hope we find space for them at our new ground.
