trouble at Failsworth council meeting !

How would people feel about moving to Saddleworth?

I'd have far less of a problem moving to Saddleworth than moving to Failsworth, as Saddleworth isn't an area dominated by one set of supporters i.e. Citeh as long as the proposal had ambition and a decent capacity (i.e. 20,000 plus) with top class facilities etc.

Oh, and just a little note - doesn't most of Oldham have MANC phone numbers? Oh dear, best sharpen the pitchforks and burn them tharr telephone directories!

How would you define an Oldham phone number?

I didn't say it was wrong, all I said was that business addresses state they are from (or in) Manchester.

*sigh*

For instance - Failsworth, Manchester, M35 0QB - they do not declare their address as Failsworth, Oldham, M35 0QB. You won't find many that do, if any. It's a social thing with the area, they have more affinity with Manchester than they do with Oldham. But they are in the Oldham Borough, go figure...

If a business chose to use "...failsworth, oldham, M35 9xx", it would be incorrectly addressed. It's not a free choice what your postal address is. Saddleworth yorkies have a postal address of "...Greenfield, oldham OL4 xxx" They can't choose "Greenfield, West Yorkshire OL4 xxx" anymore than failsworth people can choose oldham. It's determined by the post office.

I really don't see what point you're trying to make with the postal address rummy? the business address is the postal address.

It re-inforces the local attitude towards Oldham. and the perceptions of their connections with Manchester. With the rest of the post you ommited it made perfect sense.

The point I was picking up on was the bit about businesses choosing to use "manchester" in their address.

As for the scoial aspect, whilst a lot might see themselves as mancs, I'd bet a lot socialise just around failsworth itself, then, going wider it's be manchester, but who the hell would want to spend a lot of time in oldham thesedays?

It's not like the old days of the coal hole, wren's nest, etc, so it's not a great drinking location, and with a few exceptions it's not great for food either, so yeah socially they'd go to manchester.

I don't know enough about miggy people to state for certain which way they lean but I'm sure stipey used to claim there was a fairly strong link to oldham.

As for people having to drag their sorry arses to the other side of the borough, well it's only 1 mile outside chadd, so it's hardly a trek across the desert. If those people you refer to cannot make the 4 mile journey from BP to broadway, then you'd have to ask just how little change they are capable of coping with.

In the 50s the people of chadderton didn't want to be part of oldham. Now people claim the historical links are unbreakable, and yet the areas had been linked industrially for over 100 years.

Oh and mart - 0161 is a manchester phone code, ask anyone. Oldham hasn't got one. Some parts of OMBC have glossop codes, others have rochdale. 0161 is manchester.

I never said the stalwart heartlands supporters wouldn't go, I said they'd drag their sorry arses. Implying that whatever the change or the weather, they will still go. My point is that there will be no fooker sat with them.

Thanks for putting me straight on all of that anyway. Looks like The Failsworth Colosseum will be packed to the rafters after all....

Lowest form of wit rummy.

You're starting to sound like those people who put words in peoples mouths - where did i suggest it will be packed? I just don't think it will be the unmitigated disaster that others are predicting. And I think that in the long term people will see it as the norm, and people from the local area will give it a go.

Change happens, like chadd being a "full" part of oldham has happened. It wasn't back in the 50s, it didn't want to be - others have said failsworth doesn't want to be part of oldham - I'm not very sure that they always "want" to be part of manchester either, at least not politically, especially when their council ballses things up even more than OMBC.

Let's be honest here, a lot of people would like to take their bit of oldham out of OMBC - it's pretty crap, a lot would go for tameside I reckon. So you have to take some caution with the failsworth is anti-oldham sentiment imho.

I thought as much - so I don't see the reason for pointing that out... Unless I missed a bit of irony?

Anyone who remembers the 'old' numbers and/or has lived in Oldham for any length of time knows very well that 0161 620/624/628/652 is Oldham. It's about as relevant as the postcodes. Has anyone asked the people who live in an OL postcode the other side of Todmorden which town they feel 'part of'?
