Penney stated: "It is obviously very frustrating to be leaving Oldham but I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the club. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to each of the players and my staff, all of whom have been 100% behind me. Finally, I would like to wish the club every success in the future."

You hid it well, i'd love to see what you look like when you feel indifferent about something.

Martin Gray in tonight's rarely wrong stated tonight - "When Dave first came in he was told to keep the club in this league,"

Regarding that, the manager did his job.

"Yes, we wanted to have a better season and not just keep the club up but push it forward. Thare have been a lot of distractions along the way and we have had a lot of long-term injuries to key players. That never helps any team and you need a bit of luck in that respect."

"I think a lot of the players feel that they maybe haven't stepped up to the mark".......... (Comments echoed btw by Captain Gregan as well)

"Some of the players the manager brought in have, for me, let him down."

I think he makes a very good point here regarding DP and some of the players do need to look at themselves as well and up their game if they are here next year - and not just those he brought in either!!!!

Interesting comment from Gray in that interview in the Chron:

“When Dave first came in he was told to keep the club in this league,” said Gray, who took charge of Athletic in a caretaker capacity for Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Charlton.
Now fair enough,no-one really expected us to go up this season, and after the collapse in the second half of last season it was always going to be, at best, a season of consolidation and transition. But was narrowly avoiding relegation really the best we were hoping for?

No!

As he stated is the next line, we wanted a better season, not just to keep us up, but to push us forward.

As i said in previous post, the reasons given by Gray were, IMO fair enough and realistically known by most fans that reasons for the struggle this season are wider than just with DP -

You just beat me to it!.......Was that really the height of our ambition?

That must have been kept quiet when trying to flog season tickets!

He could probably do a decent job in League 2, as long as he's learnt from his tactical balls ups. I don't ever see him being more than League 2 / bottom half of League 1 manager unless he shows more ambition and adventure. If he gets it, good luck to the guy. Nothing more, nothing less.
