Whats this anti virus

Recommended Posts

My Norton is set to run out, however I'm not going to replace it with anything as I intend on buying a new laptop and anticipate a year free with it?

So, can anybody be good enough to recommend a good laptop deal? My current one no longer runs off battery and tasks such as opening the start menu regularly overwhelms it. I don't want to spend a fortune and only use it for Latics, OWTB, Facebook, Youtube, banking and itunes. Oh and Youporn, occasionally.

Dell Inspirons are generally a decent bet.

I've had Macs now for 27 years and never had a virus yet.

Nothing wrong with Flash on my Mac OAFC0000. Which model have you got?

:cardinal:

Flash has a long and heavily documented history of poor performance on macs. Its one of the reasons it is not on the iphone / ipad (although the real reason is money)...

I have a iMac...

If you use a pc for simple web browsing, emailing and the odd anonymous letter to the authorities about the strange couple next door (just me?) then you can not go wrong with linux. Flash can sometimes be a bit choppy when watching Latics world and other online video resources but it is improving all the time.

Viruses are next to non-existent, occasionally there are security holes found but that is true of any OS. There will be a short period of re-adjustment but the time spent doing this will pay off many times when compared to the time spent updating virus & malware software then actually scanning machines plus the gradual slow down of Windows machines which results in 30-40 seconds lag before it opens a browser after turning the PC on just goes away.

If you have an old PC that you are thinking of replacing with a new shiny windows 7 one from one of the many overpriced crap peddling high st "specialists" then you may want to consider whacking one of the flavours of linux on, what have you got to lose? For home I would recommend ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/ then visit http://ninite.com/linux/ and away you go.

Browser vulnerabilities and vulnerabilities in 3rd party apps such as Adobe reader..etc.. still exist but keep up to date and remember the basics of using a pc and you'll be fine.

Not for everyone and some people may find the adjustment away from the Microsoft way of doing things is a big leap but it can be a means of saving a few hundred quid and eeking out a couple more years of a pcs life.

As for the Symantec link was simply told a corporate agreement/ share issue deal in UK that meant PCW Directors in effect owned part of company obviously this must be wrong but the way its pushes the product ?? The bloke who told me had just sold shares and was off to Jersey with his cash and his daughter who I went to school with. In excess of £42 million. Now possibly the wealthiest bloke on Jersey with a reg plate 007 on his Hummer and a new venture capital business.

Last time I checked, PCWorld were wholly owned by Dixons. Neither PCWorld or Dixons hold any significant shareholding in Symantec, if any at all. The difference in magnitude of the two companies is HUGE. Dixons could liquidate all of their assests and still not come close to purchasing 1% of Symantec.

Maybe the confusion is with PC Tools? Symantec own PC Tools, for which the owners of PC Tools got cash plus stock. Maybe someone picked up the wrong end of the stick with that one. It could be an easy mistake to make.

As for the rest of the thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of AV software and can make their own decisions. It just bugs me when people put down a product they have clearly not even tried. Norton is so much better than Trend, McAfee, CA, etc. AVG just does not come close, and should not be run on any computer. There are a couple of other free AV programs that by far out perform AVG.

I do agree with other posters on here that there are some very good AV programs out there coming from smaller compaines, but most people would use one of the big 4 on their computer. Out of these, Norton is by far the best.
