Years ago my cousins both got to be Mascots. Not because they got picked out of the raffle at 'junior latics' but because their parents sponsored a match and requested it.

I'm sure if you know the right people or donate money to the club it can happen.

Shame for those kids who rely on the luck of the draw.

Before Hardy is stung up, this looks like a "commercial partner" will have bunged the club some money and for one game out of the 20odd home games if some numpty is willing to pay £100+ then it will bring some money into the club. No child's dreams will be shattered, the mascot scheme won't be abandoned just a one-off that will raise the profile of the footie mascot site. The fact that we are even discussing it on here means they have achieved some of their desired outcomes.

Having looked at the Footy Mascot website, it seems that some of the money raised stays with them, some goes back to Latics and some goes to charity. Currently, the only way to be included in the raffle to be mascot is to be a Boundary Blues Member and be at either the End of Season or Christmas party (unless I am mistaken).

I suppose that having an auction can therefore achieve a number of positives.

Money for Latics

Money for Charity

Gives more kids the chance to be mascot (something I am sure that my boy will never ever forget doing)

The thing that concerns me the most, is whether this has been done with the prior knowledge and agreement of the Boundary Blues team. I'm sure that Lisa will come on here and give us her view at some point.

Dangerous talk. too much like common sense and a rational analysis.

I'm no socialist, but doesn't this just ensure some spoilt brat from Saddleworth (who probably supports Leeds) gets it?

As Saddleworth isn't part of Oldham on exactly the same basis that Failsworth isn't what's the problem? That sounds like one monumental shoulder chip.

Agree with prozac here. I really really don't want to come across as someone who will birate the club at every opportunity, but how many :petesake: moments can you have that are attributed to the off the field management.

I can appreciate the revenue argument but in my opinion its a question of morals. As the offer stands, and based solely on the package details on the official, this is a massive, massive kick in the b****cks to those who have paid their boundary blues membership fees and those that give up their own time to run the boundary blues.

Some parents will have paid their boundary blues membership in the hope of their child becoming a mascott, only to find out that for one of the best games of the season, the club have shafted them and are trying to sell a package in order to make a quick £££.

If all of the money will find its way to the boundary blues, and boundary blues membership was included in the price of the bid (deductable if the winning bidder is already a member), then fair enough, I could accept that as a fundraising activity for the Boundary Blues. But as it stands, as it has been pitched on the website, it smacks of 'club shafts future die hards in order to make a quick £££', and it stinks!!!

As oldhamains adequately put it, family club my @r$e.

I merely chose Saddleworth as the most affluent area of the borough of Oldham, and therefore likely to produce said mascot if it were a straighforward auction.

The reference to Leeds acknowledges Saddleworth's historic status as one time part of Yorkshire (West Riding to be precise).

No chips on my shoulders, just an attempt at humour that went straight over your head.

My lads a BB member and been on the waiting list for any Home or away games all season, hes even a stand by ball boy and turned up when they were short. What a joke!!!!! The club told me mascots are picked out of a hat at the xmas party (which he didnt attend) and he could only be mascot if a kid didn't turn up or was ill. Massive mistake by Latics once again! Cheers Alan hardy!

Why is it that every tiny detail of how the club operates that someone takes exception to has to be personally blamed on Alan Hardy?

It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't have the faintest idea how mascots are selected - frankly he has more important things to worry about.

Because as the chief executive of the club, Alan is responsible for the day to day running of the club. I would imagine something like this will have had to be ok'd by him before being announced.

Fair enough! As a Saddleworthian (albeit one that left 30 years ago) I'm well aware of the history. My Dad came from what one might consider to be a typical Oldham background. When he was 18 he made it his goal to be able to buy a house in Saddleworth and worked very hard to get there. There are plenty of inverse snobs who think that everyone in Saddleworth lives some sort of gilded existence; many of them on Oldham council <_<

Just a thought but i reckon if the club made sure we didnt run out of hot food at the most stupid times ( No hot food 10 mins after kick off against dale), then we wouldnt have to penny pinch charging people £100+ for something that will price it out of the average blokes range!!

I thought that being a member of Boundary Blues enabled you have a chance of being drawn out of the hat to be mascot? Expecting people to bid is wrong imo… another own goal from the club and one i'm sure the BB staff are not happy about! I know we're skint but this stinks!

Bid to be mascot??!!

It would seem that the BB staff don't know anything about it, and already have their own mascot who was picked out of one of the draws at the end of season or Christmas parties. Looks like another masot and BB member will be sharing his/her experience with another child (as did my daughter at the Orient game this season) after somebody has paid for the 'privilege'...................

Whatever next Dan? Auction to play in goals for Latics......Oh, perhaps that's already been done
