jimsleftfoot
University provides more benefit to the person going than to society as a whole but that doesn't mean society doesn't benefit. Actually the benefit of Universities to societies is quite massive, the HE Sector is one of the largest sectors in Britain and worth a lot to the local and regional economies, employing 100's of thousands of people, undertaking billions of pounds worth of research and consultancy every year etc etc.

oafc0000
I will say this though, if Labour hadn't introduced tuition fees, then topped them up to £3k/year, and had cut down on some of the spurious degrees knocking around, perhaps the Tories wouldn't have been able to get away with their increases. Don't be so sure... Tuition fees where originally a tory idea that Labour failed to kick into touch... The tories where bringing them regardless... One thing about tution fees / top up fees... They brought more money into the university sector... The current increase in fees do not...
