British and Australian writers apparently make no distinction between spelled and spelt, using both as past participles and past-tense forms of spell. Here are just a few examples:

Will they skip through thousands of mundane and badly spelled missives from authors? [
]

He has also calmly spelt out his own desire to end his life when he chooses, not when the disease does. [
]

Their temperamental differences are spelt out in other ways. [

I think, "spelt," is the older form, but both are valid

 

Ones an English word. The other a Yankee one that is near to overtaking the older word by natives of the mother tongue.

 

All depends if you stick two fingers up or one.
