aMATUER PLAYER SIGNED IN 1985

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the amatuer player we signed in 1985 from the oldham sunday league?

Could be Tony Ellis, a very talented striker, well known in sunday league circles, was signed in 1986 when aged 22, he was released on a free after only 8 games and went on to have a great career mostly at Championship level scoring over 180 goals. (Blackpool paid £165,000 for him)

Another name that rings a bell is Longden, but he never played for the first team.

A possibility is Ian Rowbotham a goalkeeper was signed around that time, he played for Chadderton and in sunday league, turning out occasionally for Latics reserves.

He did, but I think in those days a player could play semi pro and Sunday league.

Tony Naylor (Port Vale & Cheltenham legend) did it all the time, he was at Droylsden back then and used to play for Hyde Independant Labour club in the hyde league.

Kieron Lee apparently played for his brother's Sunday league team once last season when they were short........ obviously under a different name!

He didn't actually leave on a free, we picked up somewhere around £20/ 30k for him which will have gone towards buying Tommy Wright from Leeds, who was much better. Ellis had skill about him, but seemed to have no end product. He could beat a man or three but would then end up facing the corner flag. From the time he had here, Baxter is five times the player.

Over 180 league goals, many in the Championship, suggests there was an end product, he probably created more with his astute football brain, not saying Ellis was better but if Baxter (who I like) scores that many in his career he will have done well.
