I would say that as nice as Pike Fold and Blackley are they wouldn't come into the upper level golf course category. They will be glad of the money.

The main thing I recall about Blackley having last played it in about 1979 was the strong possibility of hitting overhead wires from the first tee

If you block book as a group I doubt these clubs would be asking for everyone's handicaps.

Upper level golf courses certainly would, thet don't want occasional hackers holding up the courses.  In any event it's no fun for an occasional player to pay a big green fee to play a course that's beyond their abilities

Not able to make the forum but would love some pressing questions (and no silly ones that waste time) to get an understanding on how the manager will approach this season. Could anyone attending please put these forward?

Main things on my mind would be:

What are his plans to form patterns of play (of which we saw none last season) rather than hit and hope?

Does he think the division has changed and progressed since he last won promotion from it and how does he plan to combat that?

And finally - why do we insist on booting the ball directly to the opposition or directly out of play from kick offs, given it has a success rate of about 0.04%? It sets the tone for negative football.

You can't prove anything with stats... :)

It can happen big centre forwards aren't prolific goalscorers at an early age Dave,  which is why I think that some are released too early.

Have a look at Joe Quigley of Chesterfield for example.

As mentioned I think our youth Collins Kagame could fall into that category.

Time will tell of course, the Latics management will have seen more of him than myself so I assume they know what they are doing.

Maybe so, but in these days of short contracts and minimal, if any, transfer fees that's yet another reason why it's increasingly rare for players coming through the youth system to make an impact

Dave, Pike Fold GC, Bury would probably be the most accommodating, after that Blackley Golf Club. Most clubs require you to have a bonafida handicap to play, unless you play a municipal course like Heaton Park, but it's a tough course and I'm not sure if they have buggy's. Lofty

Ah, Blackley - that takes me back...  As a junior I won a competition there, mainly because my putter was on fire.  24 putts in a round if memory (a long time ago!) serves and someone nicked my putter out of my bag.  I always suspected my partner who saw it in action.  Never been the same since!

As you've said you need buggies can I ask you to research local clubs and see which ones can oblige?

We clearly have a very wide range of abilities in the group and there's no point trying to sort out a day at a course which will be too much like hard work for irregulars.

I'd start off in the immediate area with Oldham and Werneth but if you know of potentially suitable venues then throw them in the mix.  On the rare occasions I play golf in the North West these days it tends to be on the Southport coast but that's not viable for this

I think I'm too open about the scouting activities and criticism of management, which can lead to me being oversensitive.

I like your other posts such as financial aspects and golf, neither of which I know much about. I just thought you were being too personal and a bit intrusive.

All I asked was where had you seen someone play

Released by Leytion Orient, I think they've made a mistake. I've seen him play, very dynamic and has great potential, just the type of player we need.

I'll ask a civil question just because I'm interested.  Where have you seen him play?  Last time the answer I got was along the lines of 'I've seen him play, is that enough for you' which seemed a bit punchy but there you go.

I mean possibly, but as I say it doesn't seem to have worked for us so far.

I might be way off, but our squad from last season seemed to consist of some decent individuals that didn't work as a team.  To me that seems like stats might have been overused (Player X has Attribute X, so MUST be good in position X!).

As I've said elsewhere, I think we're lacking characters, not players with decent stats.  Could statbomb be used to pick the right personalities?  I don't know (and neither does anyone else!), but it seems to be a slightly unnecessary step that takes the human aspect out of it.

Let Mellon recruit like he's always done.  Surely that's why we appointed him - to recruit the way he has done in the past in the way that's got him promotion.  If he wants to use Statbomb, fine - but he should be sacked and sacked again if it doesn't work, when he's had success doing it without this sort of stuff in the past.

Don't disagree in principle but we must be open to new developments.  I'm spectacularly unconvinced by Mellon but accept that he needs a proper run at it with his own players

    Yep, fair comments.

But, I can see how something like Statsbomb can be used by someone like Arsenal who have massive resources, create a whole recruitment team to use it and then sign a dozen players in the hope one turns into a multi-million pound super-star, but we don't have that margin of error.  Everyone we sign has to pretty much be spot on.

It might be useful for us one day, but I think simplicity should be the name of the game for us at the moment.  It hasn't worked well for us so far and there's some urgency for us to get back into the EFL, so keep it simple.  Let Mellon sign the players the way he used to during his 5 promotions that get us nearer to "what good looks like" (rather than what the stats say good looks like) and embrace the new technology when the situation might allow us to have a margin of error.

Don't stats reduce the margin of error?  For some players, not all.  I'm not a big advocate of stats for the fan - I couldn't care less about XG, possession, successful passes etc.. as the are not contextualised but for those with the knowledge to interpret them properly they simply have to be useful.  As long as they don't take over.

I played a lot during lockdown (only sport left, basically) and agree with Dave - I spent about £30 on stuff from Facebook/eBay that was more than good enough. I accidentally bought a very good driver in the collection (clearly the seller didn't know), so I sold that for a profit and bought a trolly. I've somewhat given up, now I can play football and stuff again, but it's certainly more accessible than it first seems if you genuinely wanted to take a crack at it.

It's a time sink though, that's for sure. I used to play the 9 holes more, as they were easier (I'm terrible) and less of a time commitment.

A friend of mine took golf up early 40s with fairly young kids at home and threw himself into it.  Practice, warm up, 18 holes, socialising etc. - so out of the house for a minimum 6 hours.  However, he'd just retired from playing Minor Counties cricket which took him out for three days at a time so it seemed like quite a big concession to domestic responsibilities...  He's divorced now :)

  12. Mentioned in passing on another thread and got a bit of interest so thought worth isolating.

Logically would probably need to be on a Friday before a home game and in the Oldham area.

If you are interested pop your name on here with your handicap (largely because that helps to identify a suitable venue rather than because it would be over serious).

I'd be in and I'm off 8.6 (but expecting to go up next week..!)
