  1. I'm sure after having their fingers burnt with the Richards saga where people were expecting him to go for millions they decided they didn't want to take the risk of missing out on free cash again. No win situation for them. If they cashed it in and he got sold they lose because they get slated. If they'd have waited and he ran down his contract and they got nothing then people would have been up in arms that they didn't sell the clause.

They keep making the wrong decision though. Sadly it's becoming something of a habit.

  2. Assuming this is now true, you have to call into question the competence of those running the club now. I'm not and never have been a Corney out merchant, I remember Moore for god's sake. But this is the second big call on sell on clauses and the second time they've got it wrong. If they couldn't see the difference between the Richards case (earning a fortune for doing nothing at one of the richest clubs in the world) and the Tarkowski one (Young improving player playing for a relatively small club 200 miles from where he wanted to be) then they really need to question their ongoing ability to lead this football club.

  3. Wellens can probably still do a decent job in league one but not for Latics.

We have to win games the situation we are in and we need somebody that can not only pass a ball forward but have some goal threat as well.

In the games he did play he sat far too deep and allowed Kelly to move further up, much prefer Kelly sitting deep and breaking play up and have Palmer more forward.

I think Palmer is a much better alternative and i am not unhappy that Wellens didn't sign for us.

All of which assumes Palmer will still be here in 3 weeks. From what I've seen we'd better hope that's the case.

  4. The first Latics team I can remember was:

    1. Harry Dowd

    2. Ian Wood

    3. Maurice Whittle

    4. Alan McNeil

    5. Bill Cranston

    6. Jim Bowie

    7. Don Heath

    8. David Shaw

    9. Jim Fryatt

    10. Tommy Brycleland

    11. Keith Bebbington

Promoted in my first season. 50 goals, in all competitions, from Shaw and Fryatt. That's why I became a Latics fan for life.

That's about when I started too. If only we had a Fryatt/Shaw partnership now. We'd have won about 4-1 yesterday.

  5. Sheridan quite obviously picked a similar team to last week to give them a chance but simply tweeked the formation a little to counteract Hanson.

He really had little time to do otherwise. Let's judge him from next week onwards realistically

Brilliant. We judge managers after a week now. No wonder we're :censored:ed. 2 managers in 22 years = 3 promotions (2 division championships), 2 FA cup semi finals and a league cup final. 3267 managers in the 21 years since = 2 relegations and one pending.

  6. Aren't you comparing 2 different situations? Back then the target and expectation was promotion. We were in the play offs the season before and were expecting that at least. Form had dipped and talk of issues with the players so many felt a new manager would be the boost needed to get back in the hunt for automatic.

Now he's got more experience - promotion, relegation (to learn from), cup win. Plus experience of getting teams out of relegation zones. So he is arguably a better manager.

Plus our expectations have lowered. For most realists, a play off push is probably something for the season after next.

So hardly fair to say that those who agreed with his previous sacking who are now happy with his return are hypocrites.

I think your 3rd paragraph is dependent on what division we are in next year. If it's League 2 there damn well better be one next season.
