  1. I'm on holiday in the Algarve at the mo. Got talking to an older gent and his wife in the hotel bar. Big Wigan fans, both of them. Mentioned I was a Latics fan and he said his brother used to play for us - turned out to be Maurice Whittle's brother. Apparently he's not so well these days, but they had some good stories about him playing with George Best (at Fort Lauderdale). Nice couple.

I was there last week. Sadly didn't bump into Maurice Whittle's brother! Equally sad to hear he's not too good. One of my earliest heroes Maurice. Couldn't half strike a ball.

  3. Most absurd rule ever brought in.

Hillsborough was the biggest cock up ever and the all seating

arrangements brought in afterwards was the proverbial sledge hammer

    to crack the nut.

    Should be abolished.

Aye. Never banned seating after Bradford did they. Despite the fact it takes way longer to evacuate (providing your not packed in like animals).

  4. The thing some are forgetting, claiming he is innocent, is the there is a retrial in preparation. So if the situation was that he was our player currently, and probably preparing to go tocourt, he would almost certainly would have been suspended. Nearly all clubs would do the same in that scenario. Look at the grief Sunderland got because they continued to play him whilst waiting for trial (and how long was that).

So he is someone preparing to defend himself in court, and the normal term is "concentrating on proving his innocence" or some suchlike, but suspended. Of course, he could still be convicted.

So he will have player, who has had a 5 year playing career so far, will have been out of the game for longer than that, around 6 years at trial, and will be approaching 30. His career will amount to 100 games in 10 years by the time it comes to trial or is dropped.

As I have said previously and others say above, he is not worth it on football and employment grounds alone.

Some are also forgetting that he has yet to be recharged. The clock is ticking......

Here's the newbies. Festus Arthur looks a big lad, and Shez's lad is in the academy.

Good to see my mates lad on there - good if he made it. His dad once got invited for a trial at Dale scored 2 against their first team - following day manager got sacked and he never heard from them again. Hope his lad has more luck.

I also really really hope Bailey Whalley's name rhymes.

  6. I'm not sure how Luis Suarez being a monumental bell end relates in any way to the incompetence of South Yorkshire police and their subsequent cover up. You clearly have an agenda, I don't think the rest of us necessarily buy into it but your point is noted. Move on. Please.

  7. A big debate over whether we should sign someone who was convicted of rape, whether right or wrong, and has not played football for :censored:ing years. Is he likely to be the player he once was and stick 20+ goals in per season, meaning is he a player who even warrants this debate?

Is this debate only here because he was "once" good?

This thread proves that opinion is split, and nothing is going to change that. Whether you're pro-Evans or not, the fact is when he was linked with a move to BP whilst still a convicted rapist it brought nothing but negative headlines our way.

We've now pretty much done the unthinkable, largely thanks to a club legend who we hope can have us fanbase thinking positively for once and look towards the top of the league next season as opposed the bottom, and people still want to risk that all by trying to sign said convicted rapist based on some good form he showed back when Jake Cassidy last :censored:ing scored.

Come on lads, let's move on.

I'm not sure the pro Evans lobby (which includes me) are advocating we immediately rush out to sign him. I think what we are saying, and obviously I can't speak for others, is that, if those responsible for what goes on the pitch every week deem he would be an improvement on what we have them they should be allowed to make the effort to sign him.

I felt the same last year when ha had served the punishment laid down on conviction, it's perhaps not terribly surprising that I feel the same now that conviction has been quashed.

  8. Out of curiosity is there a scenario where Evans could end up back in prison? Say the retrial goes against him, could the judge impose a longer sentence than the previous one resulting in Evans having to go back to prison to serve the difference?

No - can't impose a longer sentence. Only if had been appealed as unduly lenient first time round. It wasn't.

  9. Convicted Ched Evans, would become Previously convicted Ched Evans. Press would still give us :censored:, as would many fans around the country. For now though, he is still on trial for 2 months until his hearing, and even then he may get re-tried in a higher court. 4 years of not playing football, and he was a lower Championship/League one player before that. I dont get the need for dragging us into the limelight again, guilty or not Id steer clear and focus on other players

His hearing won't be in 2 months. The CPS has 2 months (maximum) to charge him. Any trial wouldn't be set until after that. I predict he will be innocent with no trial pending 2 months from now.

  10. I wouldn't be surprised if the retrial does not happen. It rather depends on the 'victim' being able to take the undoubted stress this would cause her.

Neither would I. Seems like a whole load of expense and trauma for all concerned given whichever way the verdict goes everybody just goes home at the end of it.
