I said our midfield, Hogan and Sutton were poor and I wish we played like Gateshead.

You are just delusional. Sheron had a good half a game of football last week. Back to being over run by Callum Fucking Whelan this week, so well done for supporting him.

The other two were just as shit. But McGahey is a centre back.

Yes but come on, this comment wasn’t your finest:

“You must be annoyed Norwood scored and waved his arms a bit today.”

    Seriously? To a fellow Latic?

    Second half he was superb.

I’d just like a ninety performance from the man brought in to be the difference- especially when we’re struggling for consistency. He generally plays well when we play well. I’d like him to play well when we’re not playing well and help us, instead of sulking when things don’t go his way.

A mate of a mate turned up for our six a side league, unbeknown to us he was semi pro, and he used to talk us all game, didn’t get frustrated by how shit we were, whilst still being the best player on the pitch by a country mile. We won the league.  I think Norwood is so good, and in a similar way to my story is levels above a lot of them. Lead by example and show the others what 90 minutes of intensity looks like, without sulking- especially when you’re up against.

Is that too much to ask?

I agree with this. What you don’t say, but must be a contributory factor, is that in all probability your semi pro raised your collective level - it’s a team game, and he couldn’t have won the league by himself. It’s a pity that Norwood can’t have a similar influence when games aren’t going well. The rest of the team would surely learn from and benefit from a player of his skill and experience. We might even string a few wins together eventually!

And Manchester United are playing 18yo Kobbie Mainoo who settled in right away and looks a great prospect.

Yes, Mainoo already looks the real deal, a superb prospect. He already seems mature beyond his years, reminds me of Jude Bellingham in that respect. Great players always seem to have more time somehow, and Mainoo as you say looks like he has a great future.

I know! Oops 🤣 mind you, they were 0-5 down and pulled it back to 3-5 plus apparently missed a couple of sitters near the end as well so just one of those crazy games.

Yes, they made a good comeback to be fair! This league can certainly deliver on goals/entertainment, but I so want us to get out of it!

Can any of the historians tell us when we last three away league games on the bounce?

We won 4 away games in the league in Nov/Dec 2020.

21 Nov Exeter away won 2-1

24 Nov Barrow away won 4-3

5 Dec Cambridge away won 2-1

19 Dec Newport away won 4-2

On 8 Nov we beat Hampton & Richmond 3-2 away in the FA Cup 1st round, 10 Nov won 3-2 at Bradford in the EFL Trophy and 28 Nov we beat Bradford away 2-1 in the FA Cup 2nd round. So 7 away wins in a row including the EFL Trophy/FA Cup.

Remember when we all thought Aldershot were relegation certainties? Currently in the play offs and into the FA Cup 3rd round with a trip to West Brom!

It really does show that putting a team together and creating a winning mentality is not just about budget at this level

    er.......(cough)

Which of those are earning rave reviews in leagues higher than Mickleover?

On a more general point though, I do hope at some point, maybe towards the end of the season if we miss out on the play offs, MM will try out some of the youth team players. For a club at our level bringing through our own youngsters has to be a central ambition. I know it's another universe and it was towards the end of the game, but AC Milan were happy to bring on a 17 year old the other night against Newcastle in a big CL game, for whom Lewis Miley, the same age, has been playing well. If you're good enough, you're old enough - at any level.

Back to the Podcast...  The 'scam' of awards ceremonies certainly used to pervade in the financial services industry - the more cynical of us (that would be me) always assumed that the likelihood of winning an award was in direct proportion to the number if tickets a firm was prepared to buy, usually in a Park Lane hotel and several hundred pounds a pop.  When I was a regulator my team always took the view that the more awards a firm had on display in reception was in inverse proportion to their adherence to the rules.

Ha that reminds me of the quote somebody (Sir Kenneth Cork?) made years ago - he said if he walked into a corporate HQ and saw lots of marble in the reception area, he suspected the business was on thin ice!

It’s a nice thought, but it would feel a bit desperate to me. I’m offering my professional services and they don’t get back to me. . like I said my pride would kick in- and I’d just be a fan.

It’s no different to them asking for Joiners to help with ground maintenance- agreeing to put you on list and then never contacting you despite you continually offering. The club aren’t interested or have enough people they prefer to use, so move on.

I don't think it needs to be seen as desperate. As it happens, I'm with you in that I would be bloody annoyed if my tips weren't being responded to - even an acknowledgement would be something, and if that basic minimum doesn't happen, that's poor and unprofessional.

It's a bug, even at my old age. I spot a player who I think will make a big difference and as a fan just want to let the club know. I don't expect them to sign every recommendation as its about opinions and what the manager of the time believes is required.

The team IMO has been and still is is too pedestrian and it may be a risk in giving young Atherton a chance on the right wing, but we cant carry on as we are.

I hope from January we see a big injection of dynamic players, even if it means on loan.

I have recommended to a club representative the Hendon lad be looked at as I've only seen him on match highlights.

He may or may not be as good as he appears to me, but at least he'd be on the radar.

As said above, the club should at least have the courtesy to acknowledge your recommendations even if they don't follow them up for whatever reason. Of course people there may be busy and with the best will in the world not able to respond immediately, but it doesn't take too long to send an email/text/phone call to say thanks, we'll take a look. You have every right to feel disillusioned based on what you say you've experienced. Next time you highlight a player, why not point out previous tips who have gone on to thrive elsewhere. We all agree this squad is not where it needs to be, particularly given what the Rothwells have spent to date, and we can't afford to miss out on players with the potential to improve us.

Professional pride comes into that- especially if it’s an unpaid role, which  I’d imagine it is. Why should he badger the club if they don’t bother to contact him. They either rate his eye or they don’t, if I was in BP’s position I’d just move on.

BP can answer that, but I'll offer a suggestion - because he's a Latics fan as well as a scout.

Been looking at several matches the young midfielder Billy Leonard at Hendon has played, he has something about him which suggests he could play in the EFL. A football brain who can pass a ball and score goals.

I'm disillusioned with Latics though as they have me on the scouting books, but no one has bothered to contact me. Something other previous managers have done.

Easy for me to say, but you must persevere, BP. Don’t wait for them to contact you, nag them if necessary and if you believe you have a real prospect. Don’t give up!

It was galling to me to recommend a young player offered to us last season who is now regarded as the best midfielder in Division 1 only to hear 'experience' was preferred.

I can only imagine how frustrated you must be when that happens, but you mustn't let it stop you from making recommendations. MM may be more receptive than the previous manager, and if it helps you could fairly point to previous tips which have been ignored yet gone on to make the grade with other clubs.

I don't think it's made in a patronising way, nevertheless we should be putting teams like this away with ease but we are being comprehensively outplayed, at home.

I really do expect better if only because we have a team of professional paid athletes and the support that goes with that and a monthly budget that would blow some of these teams annual ones out of the water, most of those lads yesterday worked in a 9 till 5 job on Friday, it's a bit like Forest Green going to Leeds United and the Leeds fans being content that they are being played off the park and at times can't even compete, it's not unreasonable at all to suggest we should be doing better with the money that's being spent.

This great Mickleover team are currently on a run of one win in seven in the League, with the mighty Stratford, Halesowen and Kettering turning them over recently.

As for the other great footballing team who played us off the park at home recently Ebbsfleet United they backed that up with a defeat against relegation favourites Kidderminster who they could hardly muster a shot against and went out yesterday at home to Bishop Stortford.

Fair enough, good response 👍. I think what bugs me is when it strays into unnecessary belittling of teams in the same league/lower as us (not that you made the milkmen comment).

    Got an idea.

Starting today, every game we win while Frank is rowing we donate a fiver, a quid for every draw. Nothing for a loss.

    Anyone in?

Disclaimer - I have no clue how long it takes to row the Atlantic, so this could be cheap or expensive, depending on how many games there are.

Admin - Pin this and get everyone involved.

Nice idea, but it's easier to donate whatever you can afford via Frank's just giving page and you can allow tax to be reclaimed as well, so I've done that.

Also, if we don't win many games, your idea might not raise much! 😆

You're going to drop him and play who? Some youth team lad who chases the ball around like a dog on a beach but who is enthusiastic and keeps running even as we're letting a team of milkmen stroll through our midfield? Sounds great.

I am baffled by this kind of patronising comment. Reeks of entitlement. We are a non league team ourselves and down here for a reason. We are 10th in the 5th tier and have good days and bad days. Mickleover are, what, 2 or 3 tiers below us? But 2nd in their league, having a good season and yesterday were not surprisingly up for maybe the biggest game in their club's history. I really don't see the point of belittling them as another stick to beat Latics with.

FFS Dave.....what's the point of using words that you know 99.9% of us are going to have to google......is that some sort of smug  oneupmanship?

Lugubrious is a reasonably common word isn't it? Must admit I thought it was.

Anyway like L1F I quite like coming across words I haven't seen before and/or don't know the meaning of. Life is an education.
