    Old football was infact shit

if you want to see how bad football was back then see above a fixture between  2 of the top teams in the country Liverpool and Manchester United. The defending from Manchester United was something I'd expect to see from a group Under 9s on the pitch at Half time. So too is the miss from Kenny Dalglish one of the most technically accomplished players of his generation.

I assume you mean how bad football could be. Players are human and so can make mistakes. Let's face it, how that guy called Pele could have missed with his shot from inside his own half in the 1970 World Cup beggars belief, what was wrong with him? Clearly Beckham was a far better player 🤣🤣🤣. As for George Best, I doubt he would have made the current Latics squad.

I’ve seen it publicised that the total raised from his two combined rows is around £1.3 million. I wonder how come the first row raised so much more money, as it seems the row this time has gained so much more publicity (or maybe it’s only on my radar because of the football club).

Magnificent achievement and I hope the media attention continues to help grow the Just Giving final total.

I guess I and all of us can't help being biased given what Frank and his family have done for our club, but surely if gongs mean anything in this day and age he deserves a knighthood for what he's done for Alzheimer's fundraising.

Like a number of teams there was a link to buy tickets after the game had taken place then.

Yes to be fair you can still buy tickets for the game they played against Maidenhead on Saturday.

Thinking about it, this could be the answer - time travel. I wonder if we could get some links back to fixtures for the 1990/91 season......

If we finish in the playoffs - he’s done a very good job.

If we finish just outside the playoffs - he’s done ok, and still gets next season.

If, after a summer of recruitment we are still really poor at home, then he will be under pressure.

Come on L1F, that's a worryingly sensible, calm and rational post for this thread. What on earth are you thinking?!

  5. Good posts above and good analysis by @nzlatic. I still think we’ll make the play-offs and then I’m pinning my hopes on the fact that our results against teams at/near the top are generally better than against teams down at the bottom (I think - someone will correct me if that’s wrong).

I’m half joking when I say that maybe we do need to finish 6th/7th and get away play-off matches as there is clearly some kind of collective psychological barrier for the team at Boundary Park. I’m even starting to wonder if we need to hire a shrink, though they seem more common in individual sports like tennis and golf.

At the moment, I’d say, sticking my neck out, we will stuff up the play-offs this season and have a better chance of promotion next season, with some of the dead wood cleared out and hopefully better recruitment over the summer. I firmly believe we should stick with MM.

I know you're a fan of Atherton, and I'm keen to see him play and do well, but lots of our loans have demonstrated there's a gulf between U21 and senior football, even at National League level.

That may be true, but on the other hand if he doesn’t get a chance how will we ever know?

If you’re good enough, you’re old enough, at any level. Plenty of teenagers have impressed in the PL and other top leagues around Europe. I’m not for a minute claiming Atherton is their equal, but the point stands.

We're consistent at the moment results wise

You think he's overreacting but you don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Would you bring him back in even if it would unsettle the group? I wouldn't.

I've no idea what he's done/doing in training.

I'd trust MM to make the right call for the good of the squad though

Agreed. Reid was an idiot to post the Xmas video, and a complete idiot if he’d been previously warned. MM is an experienced manager with a good track record. Why people think he should lower his disciplinary standards for Reid is totally beyond me.

Even the teams Dino, Kewell  and Pete Wild had would have strolled this league like Chesterfield.

    🤣🤣🤣

Block me if you like BP, but you really have plumbed the depths there. What an utterly irrational, nonsensical actually, comparison. Your experience as a scout and years in the game are being let down by wholesale negativity, cynicism and maybe even bitterness. Please step back, calm down and reflect on your post.

well, for what it's worth :

I thought Mellon was a very solid appointment.  He's effective without being showy and - dare I say it - based upon results, your team look as though they are beginning to reflect that.

I take part in a NL prediction League elsewhere, and a year ago I would normally back against you as often as not. Nowadays I fancy you to get a result most weeks albeit you do have a tendency to struggle against teams towards the bottom.

All that said : I think you need to finish top five if you want to have a good chance at winning the play offs. Having one home draw would be a big help. I think Bromley and Alty would be the big dangers, and it would be nice to finish high enough that you didn't have to play both.

It's a really interesting league this season, from places 2-24. and will be even more so next season as the current bottom two in L2 are not likely to pull up a lot of trees.

I’m not sure about getting a home draw given our form there this season but I take your point and yes we do seem to play better generally against teams towards the top.
We’re all desperate to get out of what is a tough and unpredictable league. 46 games and only 1 automatic promotion place is as tough as it gets. Ideally we all want entertaining football as well as the wins, but for the foreseeable future I’m with those who prioritise results over playing style. I’m confident that MM will get us promoted, if not this season, stuck at the starting gate as we were under Unsworth, then next.

I mean, we have probably the 2nd best budget in the league and we struggle to control a game of football in the National League against some part time teams and currently sit 6th.

I think that shows we should be doing better ?

I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But is that a genuinely impartial view, or one seen through Latics-tinted glasses or (heaven forbid) an “entitled” view? That’s why I was curious to hear from Basil, who doesn’t pull his punches, doesn’t expect us to walk every match against “pub teams” or “leisure centres” (🙄) and usually has some fairly shrewd comments to make.

This point re part time teams also amuses me. How many teams in the NL are part time? Does that make them automatically poor(er) teams who we should be beating? They play the same number of matches as us and just maybe have some good players to call on?

Hello, did someone call me? What do you want from me?

    Hope (no, not the footballer).

Seriously though, as you don’t seem to have posted on here lately (apologies if I missed any of your posts) I just wondered where you think we are from your more neutral/objective point of view. Between @Lee Sinnott , who seems convinced we are in a pub league and should therefore be winning 6-0 every week (strangely his predictions rarely come good) and @deyres42(who makes Waldorf and Statler look like rays of sunshine) it can be a struggle to get a cold, rational analysis of how well the team is doing and whether we should be doing better. Just curious to get your viewpoint but don’t feel you have to!
