  1. So sad to hear this. I remember him so well, back in the days when I didn’t miss many home games. I was so excited when he decided to join us, as @oafc1955says, it was a time when top flight players were happy to finish their careers at a lower level. He was a very good player, a real professional.

I think last season we had the same great owners as this season didn't we??....unless you know something I don't?

And for perspective 2H of last season we were the 3rd best team in the division( even with the Rhino at the helm) based on results, driven by some good home form.

MM needs to address this somehow as 1 home win 9 is utter shite, and it's probably all we deserved.

I meant to say season before last, but well done for paying attention.

However it’s time this “2H of last season” fairy tale was put to bed. You don’t get promoted based on half a season of results. Unsworth’s team produced some utterly tedious performances during that golden run, and then deteriorated at the start of this season. MM has inherited a bloated squad with a number of players who aren’t up to the job, we can agree on that. I’m confident he will sort it out, Unsworth would not have done.

He knows he can't trust a lot of those players because they've had minimal to no game time for a reason, it's not like we even played midweek this week so with a doubt over Tuesday nights game (it's likely to be colder than when we last postponed against BW), why wouldn't you go out and send a team out to back up the home win against Hartlepool and keep the run going?.

Add to that he had about five players playing in unfamiliar positions and it's like we didn't want to progress. Most worrying aspect for me was again the lack of desire from the bunch, that for me sits with Mellon, he's allowing that and reinforcing that in them because he accepts it at BP which for me is unacceptable. Out of the group I'd suggest only Walker (not even ours) and maybe Hope and Sutton played with any real urgency, like they cared.

    Home form under Mellon;

    DDDDLDLWL

Now looking at that something is fundamentally wrong with that group of players, it's piss poor particularly when you look at the current run away from home which is rightly applauded, add to that we are actually awful to watch at home, I'm bored to fucking tears watching them struggle like an U9's boys team, Mellon is constantly having to coach them, senior players coaching players through games - fucking really!!! What's the difference away? We've arguably played better teams away and got results, Rochdale, Woking, Barnet, Solihull and Hartlepool are all tough places to go.

I know we are set for play offs and in the grand scheme of things that should be classed as progress and viewed positively but imagine getting to one of these big games and having to rely on a Norman or a McGahey or a Willoughby, for me as harsh as it sounds some of these players just don't have the right attitude, aptitude or desire to contribute anything, we are worse for having them on the pitch at times.

I really hope we have some players coming in because this bunch as it stands have characters who will 100% let us down and that's a massive shame.

Excellent post, difficult to argue with any of that.

Sutton has the positional awareness of General Custer at Little Bighorn.

And for the #playingoutofpositionlads, it doesn't matter where you are on the field, if you consistently misjudge the bounce of a ball, you are simply not footballing right.

It might only be 13 Jan, but that could just be the funniest comment of the year!

Thank you - I needed cheering up after that bloody result 👍

You  can't blame Sutton having to play right back when he's a better centre back than the rest and will play in a higher division than Oldham in the future.

PS you forgot Raglan who never won anything and played at a snails  pace and Hogan who was placed in exactly the same dilemma as Sutton by the manager.

Doubt if Nornan will play another game either.

Add Tollit, Shelton and Nuttall and we are really in a bad way

Perspective, BP. We are 6th in the league and have a great owner. Last season we were bottom half and had the owners from hell.

    Errrrr..

I’ve finally forced myself to watch that. What Norman thought he was doing with that header, I can’t begin to guess. It was so soft he should surely have caught it. If not, instead of parrying it forward why couldn’t he at least knock it sideways or even up in the air/over the bar. Rank incompetence. I know keepers get the rap because their mistakes are often fatal, but that one is indefensible.

Get rid even if it means Frank digging deep.

You’re very free with other people’s money, BP!

It’s a massively disappointing defeat, no question, a huge embarrassment. At least now we can concentrate on the league. One of my mates is a lifelong Wolves fan and their absolute nadir was losing to Chorley in the FA Cup. I think Wolves were in the fourth tier maybe at the time and possibly still being mis-managed by the Bhatti brothers. Eventually they started on the road to recovery. It will take Frank & co more than half a season to undo the damage done by our Chuckle brothers. Keep the faith.

  8. There was a report on the BBC website yesterday that 3 girls taking part in the race had their boat rammed by a marlin. They plugged the hole in the boat with an empty champagne bottle, which I thought was pretty cool! Just shows the hazards that Frank and all the other competitors might have to deal with, quite apart from the physical challenge.

Try getting your spellings correct. It's defaecating not defecating. Comes from the word faeces, unless you lot are Americans. And BTW I'm glad I'm not the real B.O.

They threw the mould away after they'd made him thank goodness.

Erm, I’m afraid you are wrong.

That man does not love OAFC. That man loves himself and massaging his ego. He saw OAFC as an opportunity to do this.

If he loved the club he wouldn't be banning fans for speaking up against the club.

He wouldn't be shitting stands down in some petty dispute.

Very happy he is no longer involved in the club. Hopefully he never comes within 2 miles of the place.

Unless he is in the hospital across the road*

BO was guilty of a few things, but I would hope defecating in the stands wasn’t one of them!!  👀

There are some remarkable takes on here.

I saw it said a few years ago but most Latics fans don't know what a promotion team looks like. I count myself in that. We've not seen one play for more than twice a season for 33 years.

We've not seen a non-title winning promotion team play for more than twice a season for over fifty years.

How many times over the years have we seen teams who were shit when we played them go up? Plenty.

We're not going to win or even play convincingly every week. We may (and do) get dicked from time to time. The fact we pick up points in games we play well in and games we don't is a good thing.

Just enjoy it ffs. We've waited long enough.

    Great post 👍

As many of us have long known/suspected, we are the biggest underachievers in English football over the last 50 years, and here’s the sad confirmation:

So yes, as you say, enjoy it!!

It's not sustainable and for me we aren't building anything, I know this isn't MM fault but it just feels like we are fire fighting and fudging our way through this season a bit like last, kidding ourselves we are the next best after Chesterfield, we are not and in footballing terms we're inferior to the majority of our opponents.

That’s a big call. The table never lies - we’re 6th for a reason and it’s surely not because we’re inferior to the majority. Maybe you’re referring to our style of play in which case as L1F has said, at the moment MM is working with what he’s got and thankfully is producing results.

Three wins in a row (which we don’t manage that often!) - if we can keep that run going these players will grow in confidence and will get better. When were we last able to celebrate being at the top end of a table going into the New Year? Enjoy it and keep the faith!

  13. I only tried rowing (on water that is, not Concept II) once in my life, at university. So back then I was young, and pretty fit - played football regularly, squash, went running. I still remember being physically exhausted by it, the hardest thing I ever tried, and I was in a boat with seven others! The thought of rowing the Atlantic single handed, at 73, and doing 50 miles in a day is just mind boggling.
