Fyldelatic
anyone know a pub fairly near the swindon ground? preferably one that will be showing the red scum game??? The Merlin near the weird roundabout on Drove Road (away friendly, maybe 10 minutes' walk to the ground), or the county cricket pavillion bar (you can park there too for around £5; next to the Arkells stand for away fans, so very handy - you walk between hedges from the cricket ground and come out right outside the stand!) Diego_Sideburns
This is the one we've been in many times: The Tap & Barrel Manchester Road Swindon Wiltshire SN1 2AJ Map: http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/41890/ The ground is where the green indicator is shown off County Road. I seem to remember matches being shown in this pub, but our previous visits have never been spoiled by watching the red scum.

Although you'll struggle to see the 'Red Scum' game there as it is Sunderland v Newcastle on the telly, followed by B*****d Rovers against the nappy rippers after the game, which I can't think anyone would hang around for. Everton's is an early kick off as there has been trouble with the 'RS' fans not being able to handle their drink.

I am planning to go to Swindon by train so this sounds ideal for a cheeky beer before the game - does it do grub as well?

Diego_Sideburns
Swindon has become the first town in the UK to do away with fixed-point speed cameras. The nine-strong cabinet of the Tory-run council voted unanimously in favour of withdrawing from the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership. This came after a change to the way fixed-point cameras were funded - central Government receiving the cash from fines while Swindon Council had to pay for the upkeep of the cameras. Just because there will be no more fixed-point speed traps in the town does not mean motorists cannot be caught. Police will still be out and about with hand-held speed-measuring devices. In 2007/08 70 people were killed on the streets of Swindon - proof that fixed-point speed cameras were not working to curb motorists' excessive speed. Also watch out for

Fyldelatic
why the hell are you bothered bout watching scum ??????????????????????????????????????????????? Everton - ManU game kicks off at 12 noon but won't be shown on Sky or Setanta. You have to find a pub that has facilities for getting a feed from one of the foreign satellite channels that covers the match, as detailed in http://liveonsat.com/today.php?start_dd=25...p;end_yyyy=2008

Hahaha! BTW, for any drivers, the key to negotiating the magic roundabout is to look at it as a succession of individual mini roundabouts. Treat each one separately, and you will come out with limbs and paintwork intact! Edited October 23, 2008 by Fyldelatic

Diego_Sideburns
Nice of Swindon County Council to put a sign up before Saturday to guide anyone wishing to have a pint with OASIS lads...... Urban myth or fact: 1. Noel Gallagher, frontman of the rock band Oasis, chose the name of his band after visiting Swindon's Oasis swimming pool and leisure centre in 1993, while working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, which had been performing at the leisure centre. 2. Noel Gallagher, frontman of the rock band Oasis, chose the name of his band while working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, after hearing band members Clint and Graham, mention their fellow Latics fans from a fertile area in a barren land, who had called themselves OASIS. The truth is out there............definitely maybe!

If only we'd trademarked the name all those years ago - there might be a hell of a lot more cash floating around in the OASIS coffers....or we would have at least forced the Gallaghers to think a bit harder for a name for their band! jsslatic
Does anyone know how easy parking is? FGG says there is some...is it worth driving round searching for a space or going straight to a car park and getting to the pub a little earlier? There is some street parking on access roads off the A4312 and A4259 if you get there early. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=41...0&ay=184960 You can also park at the cricket club (take County Road off the Magic Roundabout, go past the County Hotel on your right, you will see a small sign further down on your right for football parking, just before the mini-roundabout).
