ian9393 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 A bit off-topic here but I need the help of some fellow Latics fans. I am doing a project on defining different parts of Oldham. What I am trying to establish is how local people refer to the area they live in. While there are maps and Council wards etc., I am not sure that these relate to what local people call their area. For example, Hill Stores is a well known area (I think) but doesn't appear on the A to Z or as a Council ward. On the other hand, there are places on the A to Z like Hanging Chadder that I've never heard of. I have come up with the list below. I would be grateful if anyone could help me with it. Cheers! Oldham (West and East) Alt Bardsley Barrowshaw Busk Clarksfield Coldhurst Coppice Derker Fitton Hill Glodwick Greenacres Hathershaw Holts Moorside Mumps Oldham Edge Primrose Bank Roundthorn Salem Sholver Watersheddings Waterhead Werneth Westwood Failsworth & Hollinwood Failsworth Hollins Hollinwood Limeside Woodhouses Chadderton Broadway Butler Green Chadderton Chadderton Park Healds Green Mills Hill Whitegate Royton, Shaw & Crompton Cowlishaw High Crompton Haggate Heyside Higginshaw Oozewood Royley Royton Shaw Summit Thorp Saddleworth & Lees Austerlands Delph Denshaw Diggle Dobcross Grasscroft Greenfield Grotton Lees Lydgate Springhead Uppermill Quote

Diego_Sideburns Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Pitses between Roundthorn and Holts Tandle Hill between Royton and Summit Foxdenton, Chadderton Salem, Wellyhole & Leesbrook all off Lees Road going from Oldham and just before Lees. Alexandra between the top of Glodwick and the Park. Quote
otid Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 (edited) Stottfield, border of Royton and Chadderton, on the Middleton Road side. Crossley, Chadderton, near to the Red Barn or whatever it's called now. Rushcroft, Shaw, near to Wren's Nest. Cinder Hill, Cadderton, near to Chadderton Park. Hanging Chadder by the way is near to Royton Summit....there's a farm named Hanging Chadder just off Springfield Lane. Edited August 7, 2009 by otid Quote

Alexandra between the top of Glodwick and the Park. Sort of. Maybe the posh bits going off Tandle Hill Road but not much else. Hanging Chadder is round the top end of Thornham, sort of anywhere the Oldham side of the Turks Head. Unless my childhood memories are playing tricks. Quote
MysteriousDavidWilson Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 We used to refer to the area around front house/top house/garforth glass in Springhead and towards lees as county end? Going back to when the boundaries were different. Quote

Going back to when the boundaries were different. That's right and the nearby area off the centre of Lees in Hartshead Street, leading to Rhodes Hill is known as Milking Green. Daisy Nook & Crime Lake between Limeside and Failsworth. Quote

ian9393 Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 Cheers for that Are there any places on the original list that shouldn't be on there? for example, if it's a historical name that no-one uses any more, or an administrative area mainly used by the Council / Ordnance Survey? Ta Quote
slurms mckenzie Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I've never met anyone from Sholver, who still calls it Sholver. The top is called Moorside and the bottom is Lower Dingle. Quote
garcon Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Thornham, although it's kind of interchangeable with Summit and hanging Chadder I guess. Some would include Fir Bank as a specific area, covering Fir Bank Road across to Fir Lane. Holden Fold ? Quote
leeslover Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Are there any places on the original list that shouldn't be on there? Yes. Shaw shouldn't be there. Quote
leeslover Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Thornham, although it's kind of interchangeable with Summit and hanging Chadder I guess. Nitpicking but I don't think anyone the far side of Springfield Lane would call themselves anything but Thornham. Summit as an area would only describe about 150 yards and a few houses from there to the top of Tandle Hill Road (the area where tall, handsome and sober types grew up in the 1970s and 80s) Quote
loonylatik Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Here here Leeslover Thornham boys or TT as i remember...happy days Quote
