Norwich City have sacked manager Bryan Gunn after just seven months in charge at Carrow Road.

The 45-year-old was appointed caretaker boss in January after the departure of Glenn Roeder, before being named permanent manager in May.

After being relegated last season, City began life in League One with a 7-1 defeat by Colchester United, their heaviest ever loss at home.

Assistant manager Ian Butterworth has been put in temporary charge.

Canaries' chief executive David McNally told the club's website: "The board, after lengthy consideration, unanimously felt a change was in the best interests of all parties concerned.

"Our goal this season remains unchanged. We want to be promoted and the next manager of Norwich City will have that as his number one priority."

Gunn spent almost 12 years at Norwich as a player, between 1986 and 1998, and made more than 400 appearances.

As bad as the result was, to sack a manager 1 league game into the season has to be a record?

Bit harsh. Should have been given a few months to have a chance to turn things round at least.

and after they stuffed Yeovil 4 nil away in that cup midweek

maybe he did something else before they lost to colchester? timing is wierd though, as has been said, 1 game in, they won 4-0 in midweek and they have a game tomorrow.

welcome to league one, norwich

I think its just pure ignorance on their board expecting instant results and underestimating league one. Bet they thought they would walk every game.

It seems unlikely that they'd be foolish enough not to have looked at the problems Wednesday and Leeds etc have had in getting out of this division. Or does it?

I suppose the big question will be who will get the job.

Names in the frame im sure will be the usual contenders like Dowie etc

there was a loud bang in norwich this morning as people began to realise a gunn had been fired  police are searching for the suspect.

how about shezza as his replacement. go on you know he has the experience.

Norwich will struggle to get promoted first time around, as they nearly fill their current capacity already. It doesn't show enough ambition to get them up. As opposed to Leeds and Wednesday whose ambitious spare capacity in the third division sucked them into the Championship at the first attempt.

Sounds daft but I backed Norwich for the title half hoping that Gunn would be sacked early.

He had a pretty shocking record overall and probably only kept the job as long as he did because he's a legend there.

Boothroyd or Robins for the job.

Surely the time to sack him would have been at the end of last season, to give the new manager the chance to rebuild the squad in the summer? It doesn't make any sense to let him put a team together in preseason then sack him after 2 games,so that the new manager has to work with someone else's squad with the season already underway.

Like it's not the number one priority of most football managers.

Saw them today at Exeter, they were alright but nothing special. Could've been 2 or 3 up by the time they got their goal but once Exeter equalised Norwich didn't really trouble them in the remainder of the game. Holt, Whaley and Hoolahan will cause problems for lots of teams though.
