Cape Town is not the worst city I've been in (I've been to Blantyre, Malawi and Detroit)

I'm heading out on an NHL road trip in February, of which travel/game times mean we have to spend a couple of days in Detroit at the end...given there is apparently nothing to there and that it's not the nicest place in the world by reputation, the plan is to hop across the border and spend the time in Windsor.

I might be able to tell you that Windsor looked nice but I was sound asleep and it was dark as I went through it on the bus. Still Detroit woke me up- nothing like being in a very dodgy part of town in a notoriously dodgy city to wake you up at god knows when in the morning.

Tour of course

Well do you think that you didn't see the full reality of the situation since you had a nice guide who probably makes a bit of money (especially in relation to everyone else in the township) and probably gives a bit back to their community.

I liked it... It had a lovely Belgium restaurant which did a fine range of ales :)

Was a bit touristy though... It is the sort of thing we would cock right up :)

HIGHLY recommend :) Springbok and Belgium beer... Nothing better :D

The waterfront is very touristy but considering about 3/4 of the best hotels in Cape Town are there what do you expect.

As to the sort of thing we'd cock up- well the Bristol Harbour is the nearest I've been to it in this country and it was nice. Albert Dock in Scouseland is nice too (but the last time I was there This Morning was still being filmed there).

As to Cape Town as a whole, yes people were bigging up the crime problem prior to the world cup. But very little happened during the world cup as the Saffers knew that if it did it would be worldwide news and no one would ever go back. Plus Cape Town is the nicest of the three big cities in SA. My Dad's been to several war zones but he didn't fancy leaving his hotel in Jo'burg. SA has a crime problem probably because quite a significant % of the country life in poverty/poor conditions, they have loads of guns and the difference between the haves and the have nots is huge and there is definately a racial divide.

I'm awaiting the reports about crime problems (especially the kidnapping) in Brasil in about 3 years time. At least in SA Europeans can blend in with some of the locals- its a lot different if you are the only white man.

I think I got a very good overview of what a township was like during the day... and we was told about the dangers at night... Our guide lived in the township, he pointed out his home and you are way off the mark...

We was warned never to visit the township alone during the day and not at all at night... Not that I needed the warning... You can tell they are VERY rough places...

I never claimed the townships where a nice place to be... No tourist should visit them without an escort... But the claims people made about the city seemed far fetched...

So the new wave of scaremongering bollocks begins

People in brazil vary from white to black... Its a very mixed race place...

Most crime is committed against people who know each other, mostly in the townships as well... The picture you paint is load muff to be frank... Like most the British newspapers painted...

Chances of you being anything more than robbed / mugged as a tourist in a city is pretty slim, like all major cities... Chances of you being murder or raped as a tourist in a city and are even more unlikely... Yet because of the scary crime rates in the townships it gives license to scaremongers like you to spout....

SA as a bigger crime problem than Manchester, but just have you witts about you and apply common sense and the chances are nothing bad will happen...

Really glad I stayed in the city bowl and not the bloody waterfront with the rest of the bloody English...

You really are up on your high horse aren't you- how does it look up there, is it going to rain soon?

I'm not scaremongering, you forget I've been to Cape Town, I don't believe anything I read in the papers (especially since I don't really read the papers). I stayed in the City bowl too. I think the picture you paint of Cape Town being all happy and nice where very little crime outside the townships is a lot more garbage than the reality I'm trying to represent. It will be interesting to see what the crime figures for SA are like during the world cup as I bet despite the huge influx of people it doesn't go up much (if at all). The Saffers were on their best behaviour yet you think that is how they act all the time- more fool you.

As to Brazil- I'm well aware its ethnically diverse its probably one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world. But a fair skinned European will still stand out a hell of a lot as whilst they do have "white" people they are Mediterranean in ethnic origin (unlike SA where the "white" people are of Enlgish/Dutch origin). It has a huge crime problem too probably as bad as SA.

So while admitting that crime was low during the world cup (people said we would all be raped and murdered) and me saying that didn't happen and the issue was over stated, I am talking bollcoks...

Yet you want to preach about the forth coming crime issues in Brazil :) Your all over the place fella... Stick to medical advice, in fact dont :D

Where did people say those going would get raped and murdered? I don't remember that on here, think you've made 2+2 = 7 there. Crime is an issue there end of. The same way crime is an issue if you want to go out in Hyde park after about 10pm, or go from Picadilly to Victoria after about midnight. Except in a decent percentage of Cape Town, a bigger % in Durban, and a huge % of Jo'burg its the same. 1 million people live in the Cape Flats and its like Moss Side. That is roughly the same as the population of Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside combined. Its even worse in Jo'burg. Soweto has a bigger population and its worse- imagine Belfast combined with Moss Side.

I take it you remember where the company's gardens were in CT, I was told by the local guy in charge at the hostel not to go towards the waterfront from there for about 5/6 blocks on Long Street when its quiet/dark. Those friends I told you about got mugged just there (they had come out of Company's Gardens) and it was Sunday afternoon. I'm guessing it was absolutely rammed all the time whilst you were there. The place where I saw someone defeacting in the street was probably comfortably inside a corden for the ground, she wasn't subtle about it and then tried the old "excuse me" to get me to stop.

You are aware they they had squads of bailiff type guys evicting the homeless and putting them in ghettos aren't you. I don't remember them doing that for any other world cup (certainly not to that sort of scale).

Brasil can be even worse 20% of the population in Rio live in favelas, thats well over a million people living in shacks no bigger than a standard garden shed. How many do you think are employed legitimately. If they aren't employed most will turn to crime. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office says don't go into a favela even with a guide.

You think SA is not that bad, I think whilst its easily not as bad as the tabloids were making out its a lot worse than you think. Lets agree to disagree, in fact the thing we most closely agree on is the original topic.

There's a line there but I'm not going to type it since this is a family board.

No, no - let's get this straight. You're riding a donkey, whilst oafc0000 rides a high horse? Is that right? Am I right in thinking this? Huh?

I was actually thinking my horse was 14.5 hands and his was somewhere in the region of 20 hands.

Not really a Shetland then is it, it's still quite high. Perhaps a Lipizzaner, they're from Spain. Do you know you can't ride a Zebra?
