Donaldson reveals reasons behind Bees move

Jul 6 2011 By Jacob Murtagh

CLAYTON Donaldson revealed he turned down offers from Championship clubs to sign for Brentford.

The former Crewe Alexandra striker became Uwe Rosler's fourth signing as Bees boss when he agreed a three-year deal on Friday.

Brentford fought off competition from clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two for the 27-year-old, who smashed 29 goals last season.

And he insists it was the vision of boss Rosler which made him put pen to paper at Griffin Park.

He said: "There were quite a few offers on the table, some from Championship clubs as well.

"It was hard to turn that down, but you only have to look at Craig Mackail-Smith, who snubbed a move to the Premier League to stay in the Championship with Brighton.

"I've had a good season with Crewe and want to carry on that momentum. I'm not going to be able to do that if I'm sitting on the bench somewhere.

"I need to be playing games to give me the best chance of improving and scoring goals.

"Obviously, clubs in the Championship and the top of League One can pay bigger wages, but my number one priority is to play games.

"After speaking to the manager on a few occasions I decided Brentford was the right move for me. I bought into his vision for the club and his ambition matches mine."
