oafc-latics Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 let's be honest, Matt Smith isn't a very good footballer... but today he played to his strengths and fully deserved a MOTM performance. Outplayed the Liverpool defence! (and against Forest) from the way he wheeled off for Wabara's goal and from my low position in the Chaddy, until i got home I thought he had a hat-trick! Quote
dec666 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 What do you mean not a very good footballer? What makes a good footballer? I mean, everybody has a role, strikers aren't normally very good at defending, same with Wingers, who only have to be quick and have a decent delivery to be "good" As a target man, Matt Smith easily falls in to the "good footballer" category for me, he's a big, strong unit, who has massively improved in the air and really throws himself about up there, playing with passion and commitment. So for me, he is a good target man who still has room to improve! Quote
GlossopLatic Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 He's not the greatest footballer that ever graced gods little acre. But he's given me the 2 outstanding memories of this season the goal at Sheffield united deep into fergie time and todays performance I'll appreciate him for that whatever he goes on to do. Quote

I agree, it wasn't said in a derogatory way, he's definitely not a bad player. but he's a player who isn't very technical and has had to improve a lot recently and fair play to him because he's becoming very effective. whatever he does, Latics fans will always remember Matty Smith though for beating Liverpool! opinions4u Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 More crosses like the M'Changama one. More corners like the Coventry one. He may not be Messi, but if the team plays to his strengths there's a 20 goal striker there. Don't focus on his shortcomings. Build around what he's good at. Quote
lmfmadridOAFC Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I think when he says 'good footballer' he means with the ball at his feet. I agree he is not a very good footballer, but on the other had as a target man he fits the bill. Yesterday is has excellent, Liverpool just couldn't deal with him at all. Still need a striker in my opinion. Quote
Twisbrogan Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 If we were to let him go at the end of the season, there'd be a host of clubs offering him a deal. What he does, he does very well and he's getting better at it. If anything, he's been let down by those around him not feeding him crosses or taking advantage of his work. Quote
z3spacial Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Matthew Smith has looked so poor in so many games, but, his display yesterday was unbelievable. He won everything and never stopped battling as the Liverpool players moaned and winged. Did they expect us to let them play ? Well played Matt, more of the same please.... Quote
Yard Dog Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 One of the slowest footballers I've seen. But did very well yesterday. Won most balls that came near in. Thought him and Robbie played really well. Quote
Wozzer Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Any news on his injury? Could do with him battering Distin and Jagielka in a couple of weeks like he did Skrtl yesterday. Quote
Diego_Sideburns Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Matt Smith is from a footballing family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Smith_%28footballer_born_1952%29 Quote
Gaz_Oafc Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Matt Smith is from a footballing family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Smith_%28footballer_born_1952%29 And a basketball family too. His taller (believe it or not) brother plays professional basketball in France. Quote
