Tonight's Chron Editorial

From Oldham Chronicle 23/11/2007

"Chairman

IRRESPECTIVE of the decision

that was arrived at, there seems little

doubt that Councillor Steven

Bashforth was wrong to chair the

planning meeting into the controversial

development at Boundary

park.

Although there is nothing to suggest

that the councillor did not do

anything that a good local councillor

would do to help his constituents,

his close involvement

with protesters before the application

was heard jeopardised his position.

Politics is as much about perception

as anything else and Councillor

Bashforth left himself open to accusations

of being on the side of the

residents rather than completely

neutral, somthing that prompted

him at one stage to say he would not

take the chair.

That decision was the right one

and Councillor Bashforth should

seriously consider his position

before the next planning hearing, for

his own sake more than for anyone

else’s"

Maybe he may change his mind to chair the next meeting?

I know there has been some criticism of The (rarely wrong) Chron on this board over the stadium affair, but I have to say I think largely they are on our side. Bearing in mind they have to give a balanced view of the issue as a local newspaper, I think article's like this show that there is underlying level of support for the club.

'av it! The skids are under him now. I am 100% positive that without the efforts of everyone on here marching, writing letters and everything else that has been done, that editorial would not have appeared. The best thing is, it shows that our arguments are gettign through, not just our emotions. Keep it going folks, we are going to win this thing.

I think that Comment piece is highly significant.

I'm not sure they would have printed it without some indication from the Kremlin ... er, Civic Centre... that something is afoot. And throwing their weight behind it could well have tipped the balance.

Nothing surprises me in local politics, but I think Cllr Bashforth will now find it extremely difficult to stay in the room for the submission on Dec 11th.
