  1. Just for BOB! Asa Hartford played for us between March - May 1989. He was well past it by then, basically Uncle Joe was doing him a favour as he'd just been sacked as Stockport County Player/Manager. On checking both Pine Villa and Oldham Athletic A 100 year Journey and my proggy collection Hartford'd appearance's panned out as follows:- He played as a sub in the 3-1 away defeat at West Brom on 27/4/89 He played as a sub in the 4-1 defeat of Ipswich on 4/4/89 The night Palmer broke Gemmell's record He was also a playing sub vs Palace away in a 2-0 loss on 8/4/89 He played sub against Plymouth in a 2-2 draw at BP on 29/4/89 He started 3 games at no. 4 vs Bradford City in a 1-1 draw at BP on 1/4/89 Then he proceeded to play two games wearing no. 9!!! Versus Leicester in a 2-1 win a Fibert street on 1/5/89 And another game at no. 9 at Elland Road in a 0-0 draw on 6/5/89 Hartford was a non-playing sub on 4 occasions too! The programme vs Bradford City on 1/4/89 stated the following:- "Manager Joe Royle moved quickly last week when he signed the experienced Asa Hartford to provide midfiled cover during the next few weeks. Asa was surprisingly sacked as player manager at Stockposrt County after taking them to the fringe of promotion play off pack, but was pleased to be able to provide cover at Boundary Park as skipper John Kelly starts a two match suspension today and MIke Milligan is only a further booking away from the same fate. 38 year old Asa has kept himself remarkably fit and has the experience of over 900 senior appearances behind him, but manager Joe Royle has promised him that should a management oppportunity come his way he will be released immediately."
  2. More like head up his own arse syndrome...........as in i'm 21 and a legend!
  3. You won't believe how many random drunken late night calls I get to settle arguments over various Footie related trivia. The wife is usually well impressed, as I'd sleep through a nuclear holocaust!
  4. Wouldn't let Davies anywhere near pens tbh. Hughes took 'em for WBA and scored the vast majority and that'll do for me, but if Lidds gets fit and regains his place then his pen record speaks for itself and i'd let him resume his duties. 13 out of 13 is some record. If not them two then Eards strikes the ball better than anyone at the club he'd be next.
  5. Yeah, but he never missed for forest, from 12 yards or his trade mark 25 yard blockbusters! Remember him scoring a belter at BP over Chrimbo '91 to put Forest in the lead luckily Sharpy and Paul Bernard scored to win the game 2-1.
  6. I'll raise your midfielders and defenders and give you Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Robbie Fowler, Gabrielle Batistuta, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke, Ian Wright, Andy Ritchie, Ian Marshall (Albeit pen taker from both ends of the field), Stuart Barlow (ho, ho, ho), Michael Owen, Luke Beckett, Matt Le Tissier, Peter Beardsley, Robbie Keane....................... Agree with you though that sometimes midfielders or defenders can be more reliable. Andreas Brehme for one, John Wark, Steve Redmond then Keith Curle took them for years at Citeh. Kevin Sheedy was a fine taker of pens so was our own Lee Richardson and going further back Tony Henry was usually reliable. Currently Gerrard is a decent pen taker, Beckham is pooh! he even scuffed the one v the Argies! Other pen legends at Latics include Shez of course and Paul Reid who was always reliable and of course Lidds who is now officially a right-sided midfielder.
  7. ATHLETIC manager John Sheridan is already working on possible targets ahead of the transfer window opening next month. Sheridan will be looking to boost his squad with at least one new signing, but he admits he may need more. Athletic’s loan agreements with Birmingham midfield man Neil Kilkenny and Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand run out after the match at Leeds United on New Year’s Day. They would love to keep both players – and Bertrand has said he would be willing to stay – but the decision could be out of Sheridan’s hands. He said: “I’ll speak to people when the time comes and do my best to keep Neil and Ryan at the club. “I’ll talk to Birmingham and Chelsea, but I know I’ll have to look at the situation if they do leave for whatever reason. “Neil is a different type of midfield player to Mark Allott, JP Kalala and Gary McDonald because he creates things for us. “He sees things otherspeople don’t and he has been doing well – if he goes, I’ll try to bring in a similar type of player. “At the moment we don’t know what the situation will be in January, but I’ve got one or two people in mind. “Nobody will be leaving if I can help it, but we’ll see what happens with the two lads on loan and I would definitely like to bring in a striker.” Kilkenny himself is eager to play for Birmingham inthe Premier League and believes their change of manager, with Alex McLeish replacing Steve Bruce, will give him a better chance. Bertrand, meanwhile, has attracted a number of scouts from Championship clubs due to his impressive form at left-back. The 18-year-old is highly regarded by Chelsea, who recently extended his contract to the summer of 2011. Athletic’s reserves face Manchester United tomorrow in a Lancashire Senior Cup tie at Northwich (12.30kick-off). Fans are reminded that tickets must be bought in advance for the big away games at Leeds and Evertonm on January 1 and 5 respectively. These are now on open sale at Boundary Park
  8. Southend Utd (away), Draw Forest (home), win Walsall (home), Draw Leeds (away), Win Brighton (home), Draw Yeovil (away), Lose Gills (away), Lose Hartlepool (home), Win/b] Carlisle (home), Win Swansea (away) Lose 15 points Realistically thats how i feel the next ten will pan out. We've only really got two strikers and may lose our best midfielder as well as our left back. Plus we normally start to pick up injuries at this time of the year. The difference between us and Blackpool last season was they had a sizeable squad and added to it all season long. I know I sound a bit doom and gloom but I genuinely think we will stay in mid-table this season unless of couse TTA loosen the purse strings a bit during January, but given our pisspoor crowds I wouldn't blame them if they didn't. Of course I'd love to be proved wrong...........
  9. I think with Beckett I chose him more for sentimental reasons than for anything else. We had gone 10 years + without an out and out goalscorer and it was great for us to again have a finisher of sorts. His first goal for the club vs Luton said it all, he anticipated the mistake from the defender in putting his backpass short, intercepted it and buried the chance. We hadn't seen such opportunism from one of our strikers probbaly since Sean McCarthy!
  10. Yeah, Gentle Ben would've been more effective, in fact even 'nookie' might have done a better job!
  11. The only time I ever saw Beckford get a clean shot away was on Craig Short's conk in their punch up late on in the FA Cup Tie, that was tremendous on a par with some of the shots Mayweather landed on Hatton last week!
  12. I think there's only Mike Fillery who played less minutes than Lee before leaving the club!
  13. highlight of that day was Beckford going in goal he was superb, far more effective than his big fat (two jack Russells fighting in a sack) arse playing up front! He even kept a clean sheet against Steve Bull and co.
  14. Ricky Evans....bloody hell thats a blast from the past! Wasn't he from the Beresford, Rickers, Allott, McNiven (s) crop, think he was a midfielder wasn't he? I remember going to a rainy, wind swept Boundary Park one Saturday afternoon in November '93 (it was international weekend prior to the San Marino away game that saw us ultimately fail to score the 47 goals we needed to qualify for USA '94) to watch us play Hull in the FA Youth Cup, we won 3-2 and young Evans I seem to remember had a stormer.
  15. Still have nightmares about Litchfield, he was usually pants whenever Bradford played here, but his performance v Chelsea in a 4-1 home defeat will live with me for a long time, he runs Andy Goram vs Cardiff a very close second for most inept goalkeeping performance from a Latics keeper.

  17. Creaney was a fat useless turd.particularly after his widely accepted worst feeble penalty miss ever vs Wolves, when the Bear went in goal! I agree re: Olney, always thought he was harshly criticised, bearing in mind the lad was pretty much a kid, he had a good touch, a good shot on him and was always dangerous in the air, he'd done ok at Villa and was seen as a bright prospect. After Sharp's back went he ended up playing over half a season up front on his own and still scored 12 League goals, no mean feat in the Prem. A lot of his goals were very important ones too. His late brace v Leeds, the late winner v Spurs, his brace v Liverpool and he put us back in the lead vs Southampton on that never to be forgotten day. The shame is , the injury that ended his career just over decade ago wouldn't have been much of a problem now with players routinely back in 6 months after a cruciate injury.
  18. I think the little toff's stubborn refusal to 'pass' cost him big time, that and the afct his general knowledge in comparison to the others came up short! I also found his choice of subject a little lacking in credibility when most of the William Wallace story is based on Myth and folklore rather than firm historical fact. I particularly enjoyed the young lad's comment re: Wallace's 5 foot sword, find that hard to swallow by the fact the 'towering' Wallace is widely accepted by most credible historians to have been a right short-arse! Being a potential history teacher I was impressed how quickly Matthew correctly identified Henry VIII's successor. Got them all apart from Malawi. His dad should be shot for not passing on tales of Ian Marshall's brace, probably the most important goals in the clubs history! Well done Matthew a credit to your club and family! Good luck in the final!
  19. Mardon! Forgot about him, he was gravy and scored a few as well including a very important winner at Meadow Lane
  20. Not one to blow my own trumpet but.......ahem http://www.footballmind.co.uk/
  21. During the 95/96 season, yet we paid £350k for jigsaw Barlow! When we were crying out for a dominant CB after selling Jobbo for £1M to the Sheep Fiddlers.
