johnny punkster Posted May 20, 2009 Share Posted May 20, 2009 not being an expert on domestic aussie cricket,my first thought was "who are they?" when looking at most of that squad. symonds i'm glad about,he can be dangerous with the bat and is also a useful backup bowler....will be one person less for freddie to have a beer with too . first impressions...quietly confident..the last 2 farces v. WI have done confidence good but i'm sure strauss will be thinking they weren't the ideal opponents (no fight or want) before an ashes series. mmm..and no spinners..OI GROUNDSMAN!! get those pitches prepared accordingly! rudemedic Posted May 20, 2009 Share Posted May 20, 2009 They've got one spinner- Hauritz- but as far as I can tell he isn't fit to lace Udal's boots nevermind Swann, Monty and others. Clarke, Katich and North all bowl a little bit of spin (think Michael Vaughan as opposed to KP) and Ponting got Vaughan out last time with his medium pace. Our team isn't as good as it was during the last home ashes but it is coming into some form in key departments, there's isn't a patch on it only really Mitchell Johnson and Phil Hughes have emerged- the rest were around 4 years ago but weren't good enough to get into the squad. Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist, McGrath and Warne all retired since the last Ashes series. Thats the loss of some really great players and replaced with some names that have been knocking around the Australian cricket scene for quite some time and unable to make a breakthrough. Shane Watson and Brett Lee both have fitness questions to answer as well. I'm full of hope although it won't be easy against the Aussies, it never is these days. Agreed, a very dangerous player with both bat and ball. It seems he's had some disciplinary problems that have contributed to his non-selection. I would agree but it looked like they were starting to show some form in South Africa but I think if Pieterson shows up and Freddie's ankle holds up we have an excellent chance. I can't see Broad bowling the Convicts out, although I do rate him as a cricketer, there is no guarantee that Sidebottom will get fully fit or in form and Flintoff's fitness is anyone's guess. If all are on fire we will give them serious problems, if not we will be trying to remember the name of that random Aussie reject we gave a game to the other year. They will have something up there sleeve, nobody really know much about this new young aussie side. I think its safe to say even if fit Simon Jones wont be in the squad, his swing would work wonders at Cardiff aswell step up James Anderson! I'd pick him as a bowler and have him come in at 8. Providing everyone is fit my team for the 1st test would be Strauss Cook Bopara Pietersen Bell Collingwood Prior Flintoff Broad Swann Anderson Plenty of depth to the batting and the 5th bowler duties could be shared between Collingwood, Bopara and Pietersen. There are more Australians happy about Symonds being left out than English, believe me, and the general concensus here is that Brett Lee is bloody lucky to be going at all. The depth of the game here is tremendous and those names that seem so unfamiliar to you all now will soon be rolling off your tongue... probably preceded by an expletive. Especially young opener (and banana farmer!) Phillip Hughes, currently at Middlesex. A brilliant young talent already being compared to Bradman and I've never heard that from the Australian press before. Only the passing of time will tell.
