Colchester is a bloody big game.....

Recommended Posts

A bit of a weird scenario unfolding this weekend.....

The top 14 play each other and the bottom 10 play each other.

Oldham Athletic v Colchester United

Tranmere v Gillingham

Notts County v Bristol City

Crewe Alexandra v Shrewsbury Town

Stevenage v Sheffield United

I dont think this would have happened all that often before!

3pts on Saturday would pull us even further away from plenty of teams down at the bottom. On the flipside, a Colchester win and we could be right in the :censored: again.

The teams right above us - Crawley away at Leyton Orient, Carlisle away at Walsall and Shrews away at Crewe gives us the chance to climb to 13th.

A good performance and a good win would do very, very nicely.

----------------- Oxley --------------------

Lanzoni - Tarky - Kusunga - Grounds

------------ Smith - Rodgers -----------

Petrasso ------------------- Schmeltz

--------- Rooney - Philliskirk ---------

Oldham 3-1 Colchester

We went 3 at the back in second half on Tuesday and looked better off for it, perhaps a chance for LJ to use it in a league game rather than the usual 4 at the back?

We reverted to four at the back at 2-1. I just think we need to be a rad more adventurous with the 4-4-2. Wingers getting on the end of crosses. Full backs overlapping. Central midfielder arriving on the 18 yard line.

I'm pleased for LJ. He showed some balls to do this and it worked. It would have been very easy to stick with 4 at the back and it have no effect. By sticking 3 at the back he put himself in the firing line, and no doubt that rigsby would have lead the line, but it worked and now were on our way to anfield again

Remember playing them a few years ago when they fielded a team of basketball players....well, they were all about 6'5ft tall, fast and ridiculously strong. We got dicked anyway.

And several years before that where Butcher smashed in a last minute winner in Ronnie's final season

Remember that game outside of the box and everything. Always tough games against col u

It won't be easy, but it's a good game to have at this time because:

We're at home.

We've lost once in the last 11 in all comps and that was undeserved.

They've only won twice in 3 months.

They've just lost 4-0 at home to Notts County.

They won away on the 1st day of the season but they haven't won away since.

We might not take advantage (Latics usually don't) but we couldn't ask for a better team to play imo.

My team would be:

Oxley

Lanzoni

Kusunga

Tarky

Grounds

Petrasso

Winchester

Smith

Philliskirk

Rooney

JCH

It's not an easy team to call because Tarky and Grounds have looked very good at centre back, but Grounds can play left back and those are the four defenders who are in the best form.

Winchester has earned a start after his last two sub appearances plus he and Smith will certainly keep possession and be tidy in the midfield, but if it is too lightweight then we should look to bring on Mellor to put in there. Rodgers is an option but behind Winchester on current form.

The other four all add something different going forward and as we should be taking the game to them we should use as much firepower as possible. If Petrasso and Philliskirk cutting inside is too narrow then they could switch flanks but Petrasso certainly looked very good cutting inside on Tuesday.
