You're both correct, there will always be examples of it going on still - mt point really was that it is becoming much more difficult and as in Matt Smiths case, a few brave gambles need to be took.

As those of you fortunate enough to have listened to Joe Royle will know, the days of being able to pick up an almost entire team up for nowt are sadly gone. The odd individual maybe, but many of the players in the top/championship clubs' reserves teams are already on far greater salaries than we could offer - hence the popularity of the loan market today. The likes of your Denis Irwins, Andy Ritchie and the Dodger were on next to nowt at their respective clubs and we could then offer a reserve team player a competitive salary and the guarantee of first team football - something not valued it seems by many of todays modern player. But some good choices of bargain players there chaps.
