Funny the manager thinks Gardner has Championship qualities, but you know better than him of course.
If only golden boy Byrne had shown as much resolution as Gardner we might have not finished in this position.
What Championship qualities are these? Please tell me our manager didn't say this?
-
Unless he has improved dramatically as a centre half I'd be amazed if he is playing in the championship next season.
-
I would also argue that the Donny team that turned up were on the beach so it didn't matter.
The Northampton team were up for it and hell bent on sending us down. Gardner and Pringle hardly got a kick, never mind getting stuck in.

He played almost all games, the two games we missed him at the end. Doncaster we where better off without him Gardner did his role to much greater effect. Northampton, I was not there.
They are two different players, one can play one cannot. Do they play the same role, absolutely
My point is that Gardner's first instinct isn't to tackle. He does try hard and cover ground though.
They have almost identical goal scoring records.

I’m struggling to see how we missed a defensive midfielder in our last 2 games. We kept a clean sheet against Doncaster and conceded both goals at Northampton because our keeper is a crackpot.
He’s really shit mate, soz. We went down last season because we conceded 75 goals which is undoubtably one of the worst records in the club’s entire history. Fane made 41 appearances. As a defensive midfielder his sole job is to protect the defence - when has he ever done that? Enlighten me.
I don't dispute we needed to upgrade (probably not now we have gone down).
He is literally the only player we have with a ball winning instinct. But I'm the lone voice on here that says we need a ball winner. At Northampton we missed that.

All lower down the pyramid than ourselves
Decent trolling Ryan.

I can't see Rotherham being at all interested in Fane...
There will be a few clubs interested in our POTS.

If you watched the game today you would have certainly seen palmer putting a lot of effective challenges in. Fane just looks busy, anyone can cover a lot of ground. Its players who cover effective ground which succeed and play at the highest level.
His distribution is shite, you can’t defend that
It's poor certainly. My point still stands that it's improved a lot from when he first walked in the door.
Palmer and Fane are completely different players. Fane will be a big player for us in L2. There is no denying that we missed Fane hugely as we lost our L1 status with without a fight.

Correct.
One can pass a ball, see a pass and find a player. The other has no comprehension of this.
On the flip side of this, Fane covers more ground and tackles more. That said I'd love to see them in the same midfield.
Fane distribution improved dramatically IMO. It's his bizzare technique that leads to him getting a hard time by people like you.

Matty palmer playing on TV in the play offs for Rotherham. He’s 10x the player fane is. Play the same role
They really dont.

What do people mean when they cite lack of motivation? What are the tell tale signs?
Not putting a tackle in, not showing for the ball and generally strolling around the pitch.
-
Bury released a few I'd take a look at. Ismail, Tutte and Humphrey.

He'd definitely be worth it, not just for what he brings to the table, both on and off the pitch, but also who he'd replace in the team.
Get him alongside Fane.

How many times has Dan Gardner been relegated now?

Have we now reached the consensus that McEleney is shit?
Yes.

Doyle isn't half the player since he came back, confidence and sharpness gone.
Still have him back in a hearbeat for L2.

Why? He'll be 37. There are younger leaders out there
Probably but I was pissed last night so can be quite rash.
Oh and I love Peter Clarke.
-
We've just been relegated mainly due to a lack of leaders and there's an overwhelming majority vote to get rid of Peter Clarke.
We should be building a team around that lad next season. Defies belief.

Both missing the point. Most of season in the team and we have been relegated. Enthusiasm doesn't win football matches.
And you're missing my point. Happy to admit we need an upgrade on Fane ( although not now we are in L2)
We needed him out on the pitch yesterday.

So who do we keep from this "Best squad in years"?
Hamer, Edmunson, Gerrard, Byrne and Gardner for me. That's it.
If somehow we can Clarke back to lead us that would be ideal.
I'm not a fan of Gerrard, even more so that we have gone down and he's sat in the stand. We can't rely on him looking after himself in the week either.

So we played most of a season with him in the team and we ended up getting relegated when he wasn't in the team for what 3 games? Can make a much stronger case for this joke of a footballer (and Wellens) being responsible for the position we ended up.
Nope.. we missed his energy commitment and overall effort. That's generally all Latics fans ask for.
We had Ben Pringle FFS not even getting his knees dirty.

Missed him yesterday.
Even his biggest critics have to admit this even if its just based on effort and pride in the shirt.

Missed him yesterday.

He's completely mismanaged Byrne. He's 21, not got a load of senior experience, and Wellens has just got it wrong with him.
Like LeeSinnott said in Jan, he was treating him like a jilted ex, then dropping him, playing him out of position.
He's class, stick him at number 10 and build a team around him.
Yep but then what do you do with Doyle?
Ex players and that

He'll be a good player for us next season. I understand you feel a sense of loyalty to him, I admire that.
Bit like me with Ousmane.
