We were defensively stable enough with him in the side and he created enough chances for us to win the match by a few goals.

I’m not sure why you would drop him in that case, just because somebody who can’t feed the strikers may run about a little bit more.

Nazon can go one more, score and still offer some shape.

You will always struggle to win a game of football without a decent shape. Relegation battle or not.

Yesterday I would pretty much have picked what RW picked.

Wellens soon realised he got it wrong and put Nazon out wide. Nazon offered decent protection to Hunt too.

Bryne did lay some great balls on a plate fot Doyle its his all round contribution and attitude that I'm questioning.

Well, you did, thats why I quoted you ?

I don’t agree you need a team full of grit, it is about finding a balance of both and I believe that yesterday we did. Without the crooked interventions of the ref we all feel different right now.

You also need a decent shape, which we don't have. Bryne in a free role behind the striker is the only position he can play unless RW went 3-5-2, which he won't.

This is almost funny. If Doyler wasn’t so wasteful yesterday (and the ref wasn’t so bent) then it’s either 1-0 or 2-0 Latics with both assists coming from Byrne.

Log into owtb and there’s calls to drop him.

    Astounding levels of stupidity.

Where would you play him and in what formation?

So the problem is a player who can actually play football-can see a pass and can score a goal. Whereas the big lump in the midfield who can do none of the previous keeps getting picked and we keep falling down the league.

No not really. The problem is RW can't seem to find a suitable shape and system to play him.

That said he's not been very good since securing a 2.5 year deal or whatever we gave him. Wellens alluded to it before signing him permanently, that with the free role he has he has to do more ( create and score). He hasn't done but we signed him on a long contract anyway.

Of all the issues in the squad he is a long way down the list.

Disagree. I think he is the main problem and trying to find a formation to include him is going to cost us.

He can't have a free role at right mid. Play him as a no.10 ( his only position he can play) and then you don't get the best out of an isolated Doyle.

    Bench him.

Jack Bryne shouldn't be anywhere near that team. The lad is a disgrace.

After I've calmed down I still don't think this is rash. The least I'd expect is him charging around and tracking back whilst we battled. He did neither. Thought he looked ok first half too. I'd honestly rather have a limited footballer that gives everything.

As a club we give out some wild contracts:

    Clarke

    Gerrard

    Byrne

We overcrowded the centre of the pitch which meant he had less space to move into and make any of his runs it was a difficult night for him due to the lack of chances.

Absolutely. He looked sluggish to me though which I can only assume is down to a lack of game time.

  9. Really disappointed with the way we set up. 442 without width. I thought everyone even RW were in agreement that Jack is wasted at Right mid. He doesn't hold his position and leaves a confidence shot Hunt isolated. Mcaleny naturally comes inside too.

I would of gambled earlier and stuck a 3rd forward on ( we had no shape anyway).

  10. Placide

    Wilf

    Byran

    Edmundson

    Hunt

    Gardner

    Byrne

    Fane

    Tope

    Doyle

    Nazon

4-3-3 when attacking, 4-5-1 when defending. Jack gets a free role with zero defensive responsibilities. Can't think who could start in place of Tope as I Iove his contributions at the end off the bench. If Wellens doesn't play this formation and listen to me, he's tactically naive.

Scoring just 31 goals last season was much more offensive.

Oldham have always conceded goals and lots of them, it is the Oldham way.

Absolutely. Defensively we were outstanding last season though. Somewhere in the middle would do me.

First half we lumped balls up to two strikers who were not winning headers. The only joy we got was when the ball landed to Mcleneny or one of the full backs and we got balls across the box to Doyle. Otherwise we were completely clueless. It only takes an average performance from Jay Spearing to see that he does what Fane and Gardner both do. Fane only tackles half the time cos he hasnt read the game properly and is recovering his position. He is the best out of what we have, that doesnt make him any good. Id be offloading him and getting a competent league 1 footballer in in the summer in place. It is a sign that we have been resigned to League 1 relegation battles for years that people think Gardner and Fane are actually good players.

The best football we have played this year is when Byrne was allowed to play the free role behind Doyle. And once again on Saturday that dragged us out the shit.

Or he was allowed to play as he had Fane and Gardner behind him in a midfield 3!

What formation would that be in then?

Pressing and lots of ground covered? So running? Think we could find someone cheaper at the London Marathon later this month. Possibly one who doesn't struggle with kicking the ball or has some modicum of a football brain.

There were times in the game where despite a relatively simple pass to Fane being on our players opted for a complex ball that usually failed.  There's a reason for that and until our fans actually see it we won't get promoted.

    3-5-2, 4-2-3-1 just not 4-4-2.

We improved with a central midfield 3 today. That's a fact.

Thought first half was poor. McEleney non- existant, marked nobody and had hunt marking two when we were defending. Showed glimses of quality in his delivery but way off the pace.

Nazon wasn’t on it and doesn’t seem to link up well with Doyle.

Edmundson was superb today no nonsense and did really well against Vasell who is a big lad.

Byrne finally played in his correct position and oozed class every time he got the ball. Amazing what happens when they are played in the right position!

Gardner not will to put a tackle in and always looks finished come 60 mins. Gave the ball away so much second half. Looked a lot more comfortable in a midfield 3.

Fane is talked about so much in a negative light yet people don’t realise you take him out and they would have walked through our midfield today. All he is there to do is break the play up and what he is does I would say he is one of the better ones at doing it in the league. No he isn’t great on the ball but the ground he covers and the tackles he makes are massive. Gardner is scared of a tackle, Byrne isn’t that sort of player and neither is Pringle. Don’t know who people are expecting to do the dirty work in the middle without him.

    Spot on.
