Read the part in brackets - I’m well aware of where he went and where they are - I still think he’d be a plus in our position now

Of course he would be. Not many seem to recognise that preferring to point to his form prior to leaving. Even more frustratingly his replacement is letting us down by not being available for selection.

I can't decide whether going into these final games with such an inexperienced back four is terrible luck or terrible management.

It was Clarke who played during Wellens good spell that got him the job rather than Gerrard - would Clarke have been injured now, or at all? Probably not.

You've got to plan for Gerrard being injured because he often is but it now looks like we haven't.

We sent the wrong man out on loan in my eyes. Although maybe only Clarke was wanted whereas Gerrard wasn't?

Stott and Edmundson have been out playing pub football when they could have been filling in here and there and getting the valuable League One experience that they're missing now we're reliant on them... And what's this going to do to them if we continue to ship goals in these last two games & go down?

Terrible management. To get rid of our main leader has really bitten us on the arse.

Need wide midfield players who can cover back and attack, not forwards only interested when the ball has been won back. The team Wellens keeps picking is too open when they don’t have the ball and his answer seems to be to become more open. At the moment he seems too naive although the recruitment policy seems pretty suspect - a shed load of attacking players and hardly any defensive options (yes I know there are injuries but every team has them).

oh hum - onwards and downwards!

    Spot on.

I wasn't this time to be fair, think there is a case for not starting with him in these next two matches.

I know mate, I was being the troll on this occasion.

Usually agree with the majority of your posts but just think we'd get overrun.

Who the fcuk is going to win the ball? Are you pissed man?  Possession will be 2% us (kick offs and goal kicks) and 98% them.

Get a grip!  You cannot play in the third division without a useless load of old tripe in defensive midfield. :blind:

Just wait until BigDog and WelshGaz see that line up.

    Think he was trolling.

How would you know if we are lacking in that position since other players have to be moved around to accomodate him?

One day, maybe Tuesday we start without him and lo and behold let us see how we do with 11 footballers on the pitch.

As has been said by others, if we take care of the ball do we then actually need him.

Its the bleeding 3rd division not the Champions League, it shouldnt be that difficult.

We clearly diasgree on this with polar opposite opinions. My take on football is that you need to have the ball to win/ score whether that be on a Sunday morning or at the top level. Fane is the only player we have that can do that. He is there to win the ball and give it simple. His distribution is coming on too, although he still has someway to go on that front.

People forget that our most successful spell came with Wellens reintroducing him into the side after Shez tried everything and everyone not to accommodate him.

We’ve conceded 70 goals with him in the team!

Yeah and he shares a proportion of the blame. My point is that if he's not there we would concede more and there is no one in the squad who can win the ball back like he can.

So he starts because we are lacking in that position.

The point I make is that attributing the blame solely to Fane is the easy option. No mention of Hamer’s mistake and no mention of Gardner getting in the way, it’s all down to Fane. For some it’s his fault that we are in the position we’re in, no one else.

We can all microanalyse an individual’s performance and at the moment there is a number on here who cannot wait to pick Fane as the man at fault. He has his limits as a footballer but he also has his strengths.

Everyone has his/her opinion, that’s what this board is all about. Mine is that Ousmane is a vital member of the team and starting without him at the moment would weaken the team.

    That’s all. ?

Spot on. To go into any game, especially when battling the drop without a ball winner, someone who presses well etc is asking for trouble. Teams will walk through us.

Upgrading on Fane in the summer I accept however.

Problem is 2 upfront leaves midfield exposed as Byrne effective playing as a10, play him wide is no good as he drifts in and leaves a huge gap

I’d be bold and go 3-5-2

took hunt into central back 3 as he’s shit going forward and play Hamer RWB and Tope LWB as he’s looked a bit more lively than Nepo that gives Central midfield 3 of Fane, Gardner and Byrne who I’d expect to thrive with protection behind him

Apparently Tope's best game for us was as a LWB this time last year at home to Bolton.

Can't be bothered quoting your whole post, Palmer, but just a little point about Shez : we weren't exactly cut adrift when he left. We were 3 points off 20th position. Although we cannot say for certain, I am convinced he would have got us safe with ease. He only had 2 weeks working with the players he was desperate to bring in (Bryan, Doyle and Byrne) after arguing for months with Corney/Lemsagam about trying to sign in. He then went into the Rotherham game without Doyle, who got himself sent off with a stupid tackle in the Shrewsbury game, probably in frustration at himself for missing an open goal when it was 1-1 (we ended up losing 2-1).

However, I completely agree that the keeper problem lay firmly at the feet of Sheridan...

Shez also started a game with Hunt in centre mid. Signs of a man who would do all he could rather than play Fane.

When subbed I’m told Byrne complained of neck ache from watching the ball fly over his head. Now that sums up the way we have stopped playing football. Another four draws will probably do it but I can’t see that happening so we need to win a game.  We have a class striker in Doyle and created just one chance for him all game.

Jack may have a point but he needs to be accountable for his own terrible form. He got the ball first half in decent areas and lost the ball straight away.

In the loan spell that was his best attribute, low centre if gravity and really hard to get the ball off.

There'd be less play to break up if we had an extra midfielder who could create more play of our own, keep the ball, have the opposition on the back foot...

True we could adopt the Pep philosophy of having the ball all the time.

Gardner is so much of a better player than Fane it's not even funny...I think he should be deeper like BP mentioned him being in pre season, but he's told "Dan, Run fucking everywhere".

The fane argument will never end, I agree Gardner sometimes tries too much and his passing can be wayward at times, but christ at least he can make a 5 yard pass. He is a footballer.

Though oddly, I do agree with Lee Sinnott that Fane is probably player of the season...just due to consistency and doing his sole job of tackling well.

Still if we stay up and want to make a push for something higher than a relegation battle/lower league finish next year, Fane should not be in the starting 11. He makes no current top 6 team, no chance.

He may win the tackle. but he literally SHITS himself and wants to try and get rid of it as quickly as possible.

His decision making in the final 3rd is laughable, Multiple occasions he turns round and just runs backwards as he doesn't have a scoobies what to do.

Anyway onto tonight...I don't have a good feeling. Think the atmosphere will be incredible but for some reason I fear a 2-0 defeat :/

DG has a marginally better goal record than Fane, I'll give you that one.

He is a third division footballer. He is being played in the wrong position.

Have you bothered reading the rest of this thread?     Let me see, initials are DG, used to play for Chesterfield, does a cruyff turn. Let me think now.

DG presses and puts loads of effort in but isn't a natural ball winner.

How is it embarrassing. Name a player who you have seen that is unable to pass the ball and his technique is beyond awful. When he runs with the ball and even attempts a shot it goes closer to the corner flag. Don’t get me wrong I will be supporting him tonight, but I think anyone could run around like he does. If you have played football yourself you would see that you have probably played with players with better passing ability than him. It’s not embarrassing it is fact that Fane is shite at football

He is able to pass a ball ( just about)

Who would you put in there to tackle and break up play? He is the only we have who puts a foot in.

Baum? Never been any trouble in there during our games. I'd avoid the Spoons, Yates etc.

Real Ale pubs don't seem to attract the sort of attention chain ones do.

There's another new bar in Dale, LL posted about it, links to the brewery in Whitworth
