A woman's intuition

Recommended Posts

My wife's not a football fan and tbh never will be. She was brought up a Rugby League fan and remains so, but last night when me and the kids got back into the car on Furtherwood Road her remark was, "It's good to see so many Latics fans smiling, I've been with you eleven years and never known such a change in atmosphere. You can sense the buzz as people are leaving…."

She's spot on imo, Something has changed, from early 2009 i'm sure many of us felt as low as we possibly could in supporting the club, Shez sacked, Joe's return didn't exactly work out and then Cautious Dave's season was torture. Crowds plummeted and then Simon Corney took a punt on Dickov, the first-half of last season was superb before fatigue kicked in and teams worked us out. This season has often been steady if unspectacular, but the rookie manager has learned from many of last year's mistakes and in no doubt he has improved the squad. I'd go to games no matter what, but that buzz is slowly returning and as Tracy says (my wife) there is a buzz around the place.

For those young lads who go everywhere, who have never known anything over than this :censored:e league but still turn up no matter what, I salute you and you more than anyone deserve your big day out. Something has definitely changed, crowds are creeping up again, ok the two Yorkshire games were boosted by away followings but 4,000 home fans (ok cheap tickets I know) dragged themselves on a cold, windy evening to watch us last night, a year or two ago no matter what the reward we would have been lucky to get 2,500. The proof of the pudding will be Boxing Day, but I expect a healthy gate, swelled by the new found optimism sweeping through the club and the signing session is a great idea in capitalising on the interest at the moment.

I'll be honest, I've been lucky enough to see us at Anfield twice before and been many times with my mate to watch Liverpool, so its not that a big deal - just a nice day out. BUT I am so chuffed that the club has landed this tie in terms of a financial boost. It could not have come at a better time and if it means we can offer Simpson, Lee and even Taylor a few coppers more to stay than all the better. The big one is the JPT Semi-Final, Wembley is Wembley and only 12 out of the 92 get there each year. I'd love it to be our turn this year…

So to PD and the players I say, thanks for giving us something to look forward to and with regards to the JPT let's go all the way. We're certainly good enough….

As I was walking back to the car a lad, early 20s, was climbing into the back of a minibus, "WE'RE GOING TO ANFIELD" he shouted and the rest of the minibus roared back at him, the people I'd walked past all had big beaming smiles and I think my ugly fizog had one too.

We all turned up last half thinking we'd win, the Liverpool game will bring in much needed cash for the club, yes that's right, all about the cash, tsch, typical innit, modern football, 90 minutes from the 3rd round and all we can think about is that it will be a good payday. When Taylor smacked it in to the bloody net though I bet none of us were thinking about the cash that will pay off a few debts, buy a few more tins of whitewash to mark the pitch, fix the tumble drier... etc..etc.. and I bet when the ref blew at the end we weren't thinking about the cash, no.

That was one of those nights that make up for all the other days and nights when supporting this club isn't as good as this. That team of kids, misfits, strangers and "not as long as I've got a hole in my arse"ers have made the next few weeks much, much easier to be a Latics fan. No "who've you got in the cup?" "We got knocked out, 2nd round to Southend" for us, "We've got Liverpool, away, bit of luck, who knows..."

Yes we'll probably get turned over at Anfield, we might have to give the highlight show a bit of a swerve that night but for the 90 minutes we're there the Kop won't know what's hit them, they can shove their "Never walk alone" up their arse "Oh when the blues" will be heard at Anfield that day, there's only one thing that anyone attending or watching the highlights will hear that day.

I'm so, so pleased that it was Taylor who got the goal too. Oldham lad, Oldham fan too and he just earned for the club probably what we'd get if we sold him, maybe more? If we can follow it up with a few good results in the league, sort out the Chesterfield games then this season will live long in the memory.

The buzz is defiantly coming back. Even on here OWTB had its own record beaten : Online At Once Record 291 Yesterday, 11:08 PM.

I hope the fans will come back but it won't happen overnight. It's great for the younger generation as these cup games against Liverpool are what winning the Premiership is like for United. I don’t care if we get stuffed at Anfield – the job has been done in getting there. The next big challenge is getting to Wembley and after that it’s winning the clubs first ever competitive cup competition!

Good times :OWTB1:

I agree with you there...

And a salute to all of us who witnessed the 'good' times and have been hanging around when hundreds have fallen by the wayside waiting for something good to happen again!

A salute to all oldham fans - we deserve it!

good post.

But we have won Lancs Senior Cup in 1907/8, 1966/7, and 2005/6.

The 1907/8 victory was in our first season as a League Club. We beat Liverpool in the semi-final, and played Preston in the final . This was played at Man City's ground (then Hyde Road)and Latics won 2 - 0.

Apparently when Latics returned to Oldham later that day they were met with "great crowds" and escorted through the town.

Christ, I went to that, against Preston in darkest Lancashire I think, the pot was bigger than Chris Hall, I've got a photo of it somewhere.

I've noticed you don't need to log in to OWTB these days to view the forums, so would that 291 include those viewing but not logged in?

At times under P*nn*y I felt like giving up on football at times I was so disillusioned. Now i'm excited for every game I can get to, whether it be Hartlepool at home or Liverpool away. Dickov has been the breath of fresh air this club has need for a long time. Long may it continue!

I think Tuesday's game was one of the first games I've been in a long while, where I really expected us to win. Even the games against the likes of Burton, Chesterfield and all that, I'd not expected us to win. I'd hoped we'd win, but my head was all along saying "we'll probably draw". Last night before the game my head said, "We'll be going to Anfield, not these suckers". I think I even told Prozac that last week.

The reason why I expected us to win is we're a team again. On the pitch, you really have a sense of team spirit. Even when things aren't quite going to plan, misplaced passes galore this team seem to just plug away. Many, many times in the past, with the same groans and boos after a young lad :censored:s a pass up, you could kind of feel the confidence drain from players. And invariably we'd end up losing to a scrappy goal against the run of play. This time, even when we go a goal down, or the opposition have a spell of pressure, all eleven players are giving it their all. No passangers, every player is putting everything into it.

And this is why I go. This is what I want to see; effort, desire and a will to win every game. No coasting, a team of committed players.

You are correct there Frankly Mr Shankly in saying that there are no passengers. The team spirit has been noticed but unlike a few previous seasons we don't appear to be carrying anybody within this side which is the basis for success. I said it last season and it will be the same next season. We need to retain as many of these players as possible and strengthen when needed. We lost dale stephens to Charlton for a fee and bring in Wes for nowt, we lost Evra too but have brought in Diallo. We haven't been weakened by any changes in personnel and if we can tie the players whose contracts are up we wouldn't need to do too much in the close season to improve again

Buzzing about this game. Be the biggest&best ground I've been to, remember when we played Everton few seasons ago, saw Anfield as was walking to Goodison Park, was hoping if we managed to beat Everton that we would get Liverpool. First two games were back around 2000 I think against Cambridge and Blackpool at home. Always had a buzz about going to BP, dad knew this, so always said if i dont behave or eat all my tea I couldn't go to watch Latics, as he knew I would behave then! Only missed 3 home games since started coming, Northampton 4-0 at home, Scunthorpe 3-0 at home which missed due to be away, and 2-2 Southend at home in Dangerous Dave's season when it was a choice of that :censored:e or going paintballing for my mates birthday. Buzz is returning more now after it going a bit during Dangerous Dave's season, and the second half of PD's first season. The big games like this are the one's Oldham fan's currently wish for. Told my Dad that whenever game is being played that I'm going regardless of College or whether he can get time of work, as I aint gunna miss this game!
