oafcprozac
Ever since Dickov has arrived he's tended to go down the young, exciting but ultimately inexperienced route. And for me Feeney (spit!) Kuqi, Todd , Byrne and Murray apart he's put his faith in increasingly younger and inexperienced players. Even lads like Grounds, Morais, Simpson etc… have played less than 100 league games each. HIs biggest mistake was letting players like Gregan, Abbott and even Hazell (even though I wasn't his biggest fan). When budgets are being reduced and you're in for a season of struggle it's important to have one or two leaders out there. This season Byrne apart - possibly Tarky, (he's a kid though yet voca) we've been a team of pussy cats. I see a lot of parallels to Ritchie's tenure here, Brierley and co didn't have a pot to piss in but Stitch kept his experienced lads in Garnett, Kelly, Dux and Reid added Whitehall and later managed to sign Shez and McGinlay, one worked out the other didn't but all helped kids like Allott, Tipton, The McNivens, Bosh, Innis, Holty et al scrape to safety. The year after he lost Reid but countered this by signing more experience in Adams. The kids were a year older and becoming a bit more savvy and more like Hotte, Paul Jones, Salt, Sugden etc..made the breakthrough alongside their more experienced counterparts. Again in the Summer of 2000 Stitch was having to deal with Shez's body packing in on him, he added more experience in Carlo Corazzin, before acting to halt a dreadful start by bringing in Eyres and Carss. Again one vastly experienced the other to compensate for Shez's absence. The constant spine of Kelly, Garnett and Dux was still there. The year after the purse strings were loosened by Moore but again Ritchie didn't go mad, again he went for experience in Balmer and Mini-Shez, and brought back the now lower league hardened John Eyre added to his squad of kids and battle hardened journey men we topped the league. We can have all the talent in the world - and we do have some cracking talent in this squad but we are so inexperienced. We lack the spine Ritchie's team had, Dickov in signing Murray has moved to rectify the lack of experience in the middle of the park. We have it at the back with Byrne but perhaps need to get Tarky in alongside and I would love an experienced striker up top. Come the summer if Dickov is here he needs to bring the experience in. Don't bother signing 4 or 5 kids bring in 2 or 3 experienced players to complement those that are still under contract. If that means wheeling and dealing, so be it. The manager surely cannot count himself as inexperienced anymore. after-all his tactics battered Liverpool into submission and destroyed Forest away, battered Donny at home etc... razza699
you've changed your tune WTF? He's a bigger crock than when he was here last time the last 4 months of his career here apart he's done nothing. Pisspoor move if true, welcome back Paul but i'm not sure you're the answer and i'd rather stick with Winchester. 4froale
you've changed your tune i was under the same impression as prozac when i saw he'd signed, but after reading some of the comments about his coaching etc maybe he will be an okay signing, im more than willing to give him a chance however. oafcprozac
If you look further down that thread, after the initial shock it does make sense. I was similarly underwhelmed when we signed Eyresy and Shez and even Simon Charlton but they gave us decent service between them! We're a young team heading for the drop, anything that can those kids man up is ok by me. Muzza for me would be great to play for 65-70 mins on a good day, if he's on teh bench very useful to bring on when struggling or to help see a game out. I reckon someone of the ilk of Murray would have seen us pick a point up at home to Donny and away at Cov…..

lmfmadridOAFC
I think he'll do OK. Our squad is very light and especially when your talking about the experience. I dont think he'll be a starter when people are fit and back from ACON. However what he will give is us in the games where a point is needed and maybe we are winning, then he can slow the game down and use his experience to kill the games. Good guy to have around. Ross2509
I reckon it is a good signing really, free agent, experienced, lowish wage because he is coming towards the end of his career and knows the club, I would only use him when we have to but he would also be useful for seeing out games and off the pitch, his experience etc could prove vital. Not a bad signing with the budget we have!
BP1960
If he is fit (and it seems he is) he has a new lease of life back with the Latics, quite a shrewd operator he could be invaluable in also helping out with coaching duties. Wonder where he lives these days though, if it's in Cumbria too much travelling might take it's toll ?
