milnrow latics
Driving on the M62 to Yorkshire yesterday morning I passed a small convey of 4 Yelloway coaches. It brought back memories of happy away trips in the 60s and 70s. A group of us always used to book and be picked up in Shaw. For some trips the coach would be full with Gawbies. For longer trips the coach would then either pick up at the main office in Oldham or pick up in Middleton. The convey would then start often joined by coaches from Stotts, Healings and, of course, Barlows. I spent many happy journeys in anticipation of an away victory unfortunately usually followed by disappointment as a capitulation on the pitch spoiled the day/night. Now those convoys, which at times went well into double figures, have turned into a solitary coach and a mini-bus. Supporters these days don't experience the thrill and noise of 1000 plus Latics fans all turning up at a ground at the same time. Great days. Now then where is that train timetable! When did the ban on drinking on football coaches take effect late 80s/ early 90s or thereabouts wasn't it? Whilst we have a good level of away support, often taking over 1000 to away trips, I'd think one of the bigger reasons why more people don't opt for official club transport will revolve around the alcohol ban. No such ban on trains, even when there is trouble like the return from Crewe this year.

Trains were often dry when I was using them more often than these days
ghostofcecere
I think it's more about going straight to the ground if you go on the official transport, and often, the pubs around the ground are home supporters only. If you make your own arrangements you can arrive at the ground via a pub.

rudemedic
I remember one broke down on the A627M in recent years That was the most recent trip to Liverpool, at least someone had the foresight to order a spare, or at least that's what I thought the plan was. al_bro
One I was on broke down 1/2 way to Scunthorpe. Got a free trip to Swindon out of it though which was the next away game. Spent the afternoon in either the Leeds bus station cafe, or the Huddersfield bus station cafe (I can't remember which), whilst the coach was repaired.
