  1. Said this on a previous thread after Port Vale-Dayton never got a ball across the box again, just tried to smash from it impossible positions behind the goal line. What a great save by Oxley first half.
  2. Philliskirk has been played in every position across the forwards and also played in midfield-not played game after game at centre forward but he still looks a better player and more likely to score than Rooney ever did.
  3. Obviously its got to be Maurice Whittle next would be Neil Redfearn.
  4. O4U that's the most balanced reply about yesterdays game yet, perhaps because it was written after tempers had calmed down a bit and you get a bit more objectivity. Got to disagree with point 10 though, walked up to the ground with some Vale fans and they said they had this superb winger who was ripping teams apart at home. For first 20 mins it seemed a though this was going to happen but after a couple of hefty challenges by Mellor and a booking for the winger for diving he disappeared and was subbed in second half. I know lots of fans don't like him-around me they were all blaming him for the penalty when in fact it was Dayton who committed the foul. Opposition do seem to target him but he has had some tough wingers to mark recently (Sterling), one thing that does bug me though is his inability to get a cross in, it always seems to hit the defending player. Surprised no one has commented about Dayton, I thought he had a stinker yesterday, he put 3 good crossing opportunities out of play-this directly affects any scoring chances in the box. far too lightweight and he is not that quick either. For last 25 mins of 1st half Latics ran the show but we created one messy scoring chance, we can change the forwards as many times as Johnson wants but if they do not get chances we will not score. Macdonald spent most of yesterday with his back to goal outside the box, that's not a reflection on his performance it's the fact that we do not get down the sides or play thru the channels for forwards to run onto. Really cannot see that signing a new striker will make much difference as there is little or no service for him to play off. On the plus side Worrall looks as though he may bring something to the party, he had the only meaningful strike on goal 2nd half. Once again beaten by a team who were not as good as us but got the break and held on-it is fine line between success and failure and we are on the wrong side of it at the moment.
  5. QAFC_33 Who you hating? Its a bloody football game-no need to hate anybody.
  6. I saw David Shaw many times in those years, I was at Liverpool when he scored right in front of me-yes he was fast but in his time-against modern footballers he would probably be quick but nothing special. How do you compare the pace of somebody 30 years ago with somebody now? You really think David Shaw was quicker than Andrei Kanchelskis who ripped us apart for instance or Theo Walcott now? Now if you want to talk about those golden years then there was Jim Fryatt-still best header of a ball I have ever seen.
  7. Rio Ferdinand is now 34 yrs old and in his prime was as quick as any forward, if anybody has 'experience' then he has it in spades-Goodison is now as you say 40yrs old and surely qualifies as 'experienced' hardly fair to compare a 20yr old lad with these. Maguire never seen him although he did score against Latics last season-played for U21's so must have something. You cannot be serious when you say pace is no more essential today than it was in the past-the game today is soooo much quicker than in the past.
  8. But he has improved his speed from last season we agree on that BUT if you ain't quick to start with you are never going to be quick-go on BITE!!!
  9. "Noticably quicker than last year" doesn't make him a championship player-if you cannot run fast at 20 then you are never going to run fast-Usain Bolt was winning races at 15 years old.
  10. The one thing a footballer-especially a defender needs in this modern game is pace and I'm afraid that Tarky ain,t got it and its something you cannot achieve thru training. You either have or you don,t. In the older days footballers who could "read" a game got away with it-John Hurst was a great example, more recently Simon Charlton. If we can get £500,000 plus for him snatch their arm off at the elbow.
  11. What a load of crap some people post on this forum. Just how is this club rotten from the top down? We have a chairman who has appointed a refreshing new manager not just one of the old boys on the gravy train-a very brave decision given our league position at the time. He is always willing to step up to the media and if you actually listened to what he has to say you have to be impressed. There is a new stand on the way, we have a few good youngsters starting to come thru the ranks. We have people like Tony Philliskirk who did a great job under difficult circumstances, we have a board member who posts on this website regularly. Jesus Wept clubs like Bury, Stockport and Rochdale would love to be in our position. It really does make me question what some supporters want, of course we would like a Wembley appearance but so would 91 other clubs, at least we had a FA cup run this year. Pure Elvis-pah Pure Bollocks more like.
  12. Is there any prospect of Johnson coming in as player manager, he is after all only 31 years old and plays in midfield where we are getting hammered at the moment?
  13. Warnock writes a column in The Independent every Saturday, has done it now for about 6 years, wasn't looking forward to it when they announced they had signed him to write a column as it was one of, if not the worst Latics teams I have watched under his managership. Anyway his column is really interesting reading as it covers Premiership football when he was with Sheff Utd & QPR, Crystal Palace when they were going bust and loads of other teams he has managed and players who he has signed etc. My point is that he mentions all these other teams regularly BUT he has NEVER mentioned Oldham to this day.
  14. Corney quoted on ITV as 'several premier league players have already indicated interest in the job'
  15. From BBC LEAGUE ONE LATEST BBC Wiltshire's Chris Wise at Swindon Town's County Ground: "Bradley Wright-Phillips is due to arrive in Swindon at 2000 GMT to discuss a possible loan move from Charlton. Team-mate Danny Green is also set to sign until the end of the season, along with Cheltenham midfielder Marlon Pack.
  16. That goal was on TV last weekend and it still cuts me like a knife when I see it. God it was a long journey home from Wembley that day. Disagree about that not leading to relegation. The club wasn't the same after that game, knocked the stuffing out of the fans and the players.
  17. Having read the original quote from Sky-who is 'Billy'?
  18. We could always have a poll and vote for wether we want them on the board?
  19. Huddersfield V Sheff Utd-Clarke sacked afterwards Sheff Weds V Sheff Utd-Megson sacked afterwards. Hmmm, now who do we play on Saturday?
  20. YES A thousand extra fans every home game would be brilliant and finacially rewarding-with a manager like Dickov that would surely lead on to getting better players. Cannot understand why fans seem to begrudge new people coming to watch 'their team'
  21. Can somebody tell me at what point Reid looked promising? He scored one stikers goal at Notts County but other than that he has been a bag of crap-overweight, disinterested and downright lazy in some games (Bournmouth)=Good riddance to bad rubbish.
  22. Another vote here for Ronnie Blair, but remember a centre half called Bill Cranston being well tough.
  23. Played 2 full seasons together 81/82 and 82/83. I think 28 years counts as 'many a year' and having seen both the other partnerships you mention stand by my comment. Anyway does anybody have an answer?
  24. Reading the Daily Telegraph yesterday there was an article in it about Mark Ward and his recent book. He mentions in it that while he was in Walton at Her Majesty's Pleasure a voice shouted to him and it turned out to be John Ryan. For those of you who are too young to remember him he was a very good left back who formed with Paul Atkinson probably the best left wing/fullback partnership seen at Boundary Park in many a year. Ended up signing for Newcastle. Anybody know what/why John Ryan was in clink?
  25. Lived in Oldham for 33 years always been a Latics fan. Moved to Chester area and season ticket had to go because of work but still going when I can.
