  1. It could be based on the assumption that a keeper should have pretty much most of the goal covered, and, bar a miracle deflection, you are never going to score with a shot heading for the corner flag or the top tier of the stand. The question is, would you prefer a striker who, whilst his shots are often a bit tamer, and may be blocked (keeping the ball in play for rebounds etc.) or saved (allowing the possibility of fumbles etc.), they are generally on target; or a striker who often is high, wide & handsome but gets the occasional unstoppable one in the in the top corner. As they say (thus dooming me to the pit of pig food!), If you don't hit the target...
  2. If mi:censored:ting shots were a skill, I would have been Premier League!!! Seriously though BP1960, with your more trained eye, would you class Danny as a 'more accurate' striker, and if so would you consider that to be a particular asset?
  3. Having just watched the highlights, it struck that me that one thing about Philliskirk is that more often than not he seems to hit the target, unlike many other strikers. It appeared that quite a few (of not only his) shots were blocked by various Boro body parts (whether you call that luck or skill is up to you), and could easily have found the net. You could argue he was somewhat unlucky not to walk away with a hat-trick.
  4. How very dare you, comparing me to a tabloid journalist, surely that's a worse personal insult than got the first thread shut down! However, your pedantry is wrong in that, as denoted by the ellipsis [plus an additional dot for good measure, to avoid any more pedantry]) ending to my post, I clearly had more that I could have said but left it unsaid. Otherwise, if you look at speech before the "Words fail me" phrase, it could never be possibly true as everyone has said something before they said the words. It's what is (not) said afterwards that the phrase refers to. And before anyone says, I have since recovered my composure, obviously!
  5. I'm not saying you are particularly wrong, but do bear in mind we've lost no players at all so far this year, so maybe that can count as potential evidence that we are standing our ground. Unfortunately though, we are and will be a selling club at least for the foreseeable future, so I will be hoping for the transfer window to slam shut as soon as possible!!
  6. And continuing from the previous thread... We ALLEGEDLY didn't play hard ball when he wanted Forte. I've not seen anything much to indicate that that was anything less made up than the latest rumours. I'm not saying we are anywhere near great in the transfer markets, but relying on the bull flying around the internet (which is pretty much all sauce-less fans like me have to go on) is not a reliable basis for making a judgement. And that's not any intended indictment or insult to you in particular. Also, the grass is always greener. UPDATE: The Quote above should refer to OAFCM35's post from 13th Aug 3:34pm. The darn thing let me edit it then changed it all back when I posted it, and now won't let me change it, ho hum!!
  7. I've always had a dim view of the level of tabloid journalism, but this is truly astounding. Words fail me ....
  8. I think the fact that he is still here two games into the season is a reason to at least review the 'we never seem to play hard ball' view; though whether we can hang on to window shutting.....?
  9. Last time I looked "done deal" doesn't refer to a "potential truth". The mods really should do something about this sort of level of trolling.
  10. And also, you don't need many hands of fingers to count the number of managers in modern football who have never failed (been sacked/terminated/let go/etc./delete as applicable) in one way or another in their careers, such is the fickle nature of clubs/chairmen etc.
  11. Apart, as mentioned, from the fact of publicizing the fact so soon (maybe he paid less or not at all, in return for the endorsement?), it seems to me a pretty good level of 'innate intelligence' to go out and employ an Agency to get you a post with a Premiership club and then a manager post at a League One Club. Bear in mind, lowly we may be, but technically his current job is in the top 100 football managerial jobs in the country; that's pretty sharp thinking, especially if he is 'not the brightest'.
  12. I am using Win10 and also cannot get Latics Player to work in Edge, neither for clips or for Live Audio. Chrome works fine
  13. Apologies for the pedantry, but actually it would be 16 and two-thirds percent, give or take a rounding penny or two.
  14. Is this a comment on the general knowledge level of football fans, or on the coaching abilities of Mr Wright?
  15. It gets slightly more complex if it's £1million of anyone's particular brand of ill-gotten gains Although I would bet that lots of insurance companies would be happy to take premiums, until it came to paying out anyway.
  16. Is it just me that thinks that this looks like a knitted woolly jumper?
  17. The email looks genuine, despite the font apparently chosen for mobile devices. All the links in the mail appear to have genuine targets, and there is no payload included. If this is not genuine, then it's a very very poor attempt at phishing as it doesn't appear to try to do anything abnormal!
  18. The point is whether any of that slide can be attributed to his conviction. The fact that he walked back into his old job, and that his slide has been gradual through various clubs and down the leagues suggests not. The very fact that he is a coaching job in football at all, I think, is a testament to this, and I dare say there are many coaching badge holders who would love the chance to manage at that level.
  19. According to Wikipedia, Rix walked back into his job at Chelsea upon his release. He only left with Vialli's sacking, has had various jobs since in management since, and is currently working in football, albeit non-league, at AFC Portchester, which is more than most aspiring coaches can say. This is in no way a commentary on the Evans situation, just pointing out that appears that Rix's career actually doesn't appear to have suffered that much.
  20. You may well be overestimating the proportion of footballers in the top two tiers of the game there, for whom I think you may well be correct for. However, below that (League One and below), I suspect that money troubles are nearly as rife as in a lot of other occupations, especially bearing in mind the limited time scale of a footballing career, and also their general reputation as being not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so to speak.
