Monty Burns
As many of you may know, my son and I are geeks. Now, we are going to London later this month and Ive been having a look online at what we can do for free on our last day. There seem to be a plethora of museums, so maybe some on here could help us. We are interested in Science, Pre roman history, Medieval History, and Natural History. At a push we could take in some roman propoganda I suppose.... Thank you in advance. Crusoe
Science Museum (the Glaxo wing is good for kids, all interactive stuff) British Museum, although it's huge so decide what you want to see there (Elgin Marbles, Rosetta Stone, etc)
rudemedic
Science Museum- you can spend days in there. Plus they have this hands on thing that is awesome, and IIRC far superior to the hands on thing at the Manchester one.
Diego_Sideburns
The Natural History Museum is free, but for £4.50 each you can see ‘Sensational Butterflies’ on the East lawn. The emergence of a very rare double-eye owl butterfly must be a good omen. To book tickets: http://www.nhm.ac.uk...lies/index.html

leeslover
Science Museum (the Glaxo wing is good for kids, all interactive stuff) British Museum, although it's huge so decide what you want to see there (Elgin Marbles, Rosetta Stone, etc) This, in it's entirety. Do a bit of research and pick 4 or 5 sections that you want to do and don't be tempted to do more. It's free, although you should make a donation, and nearby Euston. Monty Burns
Thank you very much. The British Museum looks the best bet, especially as it stays open until 2030 of a Friday. Although I already know he will say Science Museum for all the Space stuff.
Ackey
Once a month they open the Science Museum late too - but kids can't go (well, little uns can't - if he's a bit older you might be able to blag it)... check their site for dates etc.
Monty Burns
Furthermore, any decent secret back street/ market food places? Not :censored:e greasy spoons, but proper food places? Like man v food but british. No eels.

Crusoe
If you want properly British food, you could do worse than Simpson's Tavern. It's very, um, traditional. Only open Monday to Friday though. http://www.simpsonstavern.co.uk/menu_alacarte.asp More "market food" related (but not British) would be something like Wahaca - basically a Mexican Wagamama. Not really "secret" though. http://www.wahaca.co.uk/ Any particular area in mind?
Monty Burns
No area planned. We are stopping out near Wembley and will be travelling in to do the touristy stuff on the Thursday and Friday. So anywhere really!!

Like man v food but british. No eels. You aren't half restricting yourself insisting on British. Bear in mind a lot of tourist want nothing more than to pay over the odds for pub fish and chips. Branch out a little, if you want street food go to (THE) Edgware Road and find out what kebabs are meant to taste like.
maddog
When we were down for Orient, we had the weirdest breakfast at a place near Earl's Court. Full Lebanese, apparently. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it or not. It was odd. But an experience!
leeslover
Or for something really different http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/horse-meat-burgers-prove-a-big-favourite-at-london-pubs-8533800.html
Diego_Sideburns
I can recommend the Spiazzo Café (open 6:30am – 7:00pm) in St. Thomas Street, Southwark. It gives you the opportunity to boycott the adjacent Starbuck's! http://www.tripadvis...on_England.html It’s opposite Guy’s Hospital, just along from the Old Operating Theatre Museum and in the shade of the Shard. http://www.thegarret.org.uk/find.htm Plenty to see in Southwark. http://www.londontow...near-Southwark/

leeslover
By British I only meant In meant in Britain.... my advice remains the same then... best food london at a decent price. you can have proper sitdown meal as well, check before if you want a beer, but its worth going without
24hoursfromtulsehill
If you want a Man versus Food challenge, I highly recommend the Mangal, Arcola Street, Dalston. The Special Mix Kebab features salad, lamb shish, kofte, lamb chop, lamb rib roll, chicken wing and a quail. All cooked right there and then in front of you on the indoor barbecue. £15. The Edgware Road features a lot of places that are basically the same. Perfect competition innit. The Mangal is the king of kebab shops. Dalston Kingsland if you're going by Overground. Worth going out of your way.

Monty Burns
Thanks for all this help. Suffice to say, in our four days we didnt fit any of the above in!!! The previous help with Oyster was great tho, is it true that boris johnson came up with that idea? The mind boggles!
jimsleftfoot
I believe the Oyster card is based on the Octopus card of Hong Kong and its intro to Nodnol Village was pre-Boris becoming London Mayor. More importantly, its coming up here.
