futchers briefs
Had a nostalgic evening, re-logging into here and realising why I logged off a bit ago...re-reading posts of those who believed that Smith was useless and 'good from the bench' and Wellens and Whitaker debate...hahaha great memories from some of our great unwashed! NewBlue
I was one of Matt Smith's bigger supporters but it was based upon nothing other than knowing of him before Oldham. Don't even pretend you thought he was capable of Championship football or would go for a million quid at a later date for the first 18 months at the club. futchers briefs
Not pretending!! and if I was technically capable would go back to the various debates and requote where I did state that he had the attributes to go on and play at a higher level - How people could write off such a young, inexperienced player off at such an early stage was far more of a slight on them than my judgement of potential and attributes. So yes, I did say he would go on and do well! As you were....

Which is why I refuse to now write anyone off before they've had a fair crack at it
doctor evil
Smith was poor upon until around the forest game, after that he improved quite a bit with confidence. The reason he went for money was the liverpool and everton games, he had his two best games in front of the nations tv screens.
MAC0AFC
Smith was written off by many, I hadn't really formed an opinion on him and was willing to give him a chance - similar to Murphy as in I hadn't seen enough of him to form an opinion. Although admittedly Smith had more raw attributes to cause more of a problem in this league and leagues above. But the reason for Smith getting better and better was Tony Philliskirk, told Smith to use his weight more, bully his centre half opponents. Philliskirk needs to spend a bit of time with our strikers more often than he does in my opinion.
PlayItLivo
Reid is a good player. I rated him, didn't think we should have let him go at the time. Edited September 12, 2015 by PlayItLivo
Lee Sinnott
Smith was absolutely garbage until Scunthorpe on NYD 2013. Even Macclesfield didn't want to take him...
opinions4u
Tony Philliskirk transformed Matt Smith. Proper coach doing proper coaching.
Monty Burns
I didn't give him time. I slated him. Which is why I refuse to now write anyone off before they've had a fair crack at it If only the rest of our fans thought as such.
leeslover
Welcome back Mr Briefs. I think the frustration with Smith was that you could see what he could be capable of but also how awful he was at football
BP1960
I'm supposedly a good judge of a player, but when I watched him at Droylsden he did little to impress me, it just goes to shows some players can improve in time
Lags
I backed Smith from the off. On this occasion I was right. That's not to say I get every player in the net, some I cast aside.
