Frankly Mr Shankly
There seemed to be a lot of talk about our inability to create chances and lack of goal scoring which given we've scored ten eleven in four matches, seemed slightly odd. The only obvious problem I see is how soft we seem to be in midfield and, at a push, the right flank and defending attacks down it. Once we sort those issues out properly, our goal output will improve even more. Having said that, enjoyed the guest. Seemed a bit weird someone with a Merseyside accent talking about Latics with such gusto! Seemed a bit weird someone with a Merseyside accent talking about Latics with such gusto! Yeah I thought that then looked more at the type of goals we score. Most of them come from either long range shots or long balls that strikers make the most of. It's like DU's philosophy was to be top heavy with quality and just get the ball into a dangerous area several times a game with the hope that the strikers will create something for themselves. We don't pass through or round teams. We don't create lots of chances for the strikers, they tend to have to make them for themselves, so we don't have that many in a game and because of the strikers' quality I'd guess that if there was a stat of goals scored per chance created, we'd have a pretty high ratio. Or low ratio. Not sure which way round it would be! At first I thought that ST must be a bit like DU in away games but then having watched back all our goals, this is how they've been coached to play for a year. It will take more than a few games for ST or a new manager to change that round and impose a style.
