The Keeper Situation

Recommended Posts

That last night needs laying at Dunn's door. God awful man management.

Dunn's first action when he was appointed was to drop Coleman, who hadn't start as well as he ended last year, but was doing ok.

Cornell was brought in. He wasn't convincing, but started playing ok. Including 1 man of the match home performance. A few dodgy moments, but generally ok. He is then was dropped after making a slight mistake vs Burton when he should have done better for the goal..

We then bring Coleman again (much the better keeper). Dropped after 1 mistake...

To replace him with a keeper who's confidence is shot to :censored: for being dropped previously...

Last night is the result. Neither Coleman or Cornell had done enough to be dropped previously. It's no wonder Cornell was rooted to his line. No confidence. Frightened to make a mistake. He knows the manager has no faith in him.... Now Coleman knows the same.

Cornell shouldn't have been in the side earlier in the season, but Dunn's chopping and changing has really knackered this one for me.

Agree. I would have stuck with Coleman even after he went awol b Bradford he's a good shot stopper and showed real.promise towards end of last season. He made another mistake last week a real clangrt but it happens to keepers. Cornell was awful last night. The last goal was a disgrace a complete soft arse..if that situation was a real chance matches would finish double figures.

Put Coleman in and stick with him

We definitely need to bring someone in.

Coleman who looked okay last season has not looked anything like as good this season.

Cornell, well after last night I couldn't entertain playing him in the first team again, he was absolutely woeful (as incompetent a display of keeping as I've seen since Dean Brill was here).

Cornell was injured not dropped wasn't he?

Wouldn't be surprised if we make a move for one before Thursday though.

Yeah I thought it was because he was injured too. Cornell came in when Dunn got the job and we were better defensively so you can't really argue about that change. Then he got injured, so he probably would have stayed in the team. So I can understand bringing him in last night after Coleman's clanger against Barnsley - he certainly shouldn't have been short of confidence, quite the opposite. He should have been boosted that the manager thought his form pre-injury good enough to put him straight back in.

It's a big nasty CB we need though, the keepers have no protection in front of them. Both keepers are inexperienced, we're crying out for someone in front of them who can take charge.

And who can be a threat in both boxes on set pieces. We have no one that scares the opposition when we're either defending or attacking set pieces.

I weren't alone in giving Rachubka some stick but we couldn't half do with him now.

Not one for thinking that you have to have played at a level to know about the game but the goalkeeper/fitness coach worries me.

Are keepers heads filled with too many powerpoints, overkill, its a natural position. there are few basics to be taught? Some of the best I've seen came before the advent of goalkeeping coaches, now even international keepers have them. Edited by BP1960

Quite possibly.

I'm sure he will be full of bright ideas but in the bad moments, he can't have anything to offer in terms of advice/wisdom.

I'm not against young managers or coaches or their modern methods, but you can't learn the experience in the classroom. It's a shame we don't have an old head somewhere on the coaching staff (don't think Philliskirk counts as he's almost exlusively been youth coach).

Why would a keepers head be filled with PowerPoint? Given specialist goalkeeper coaching have been around for over half a century, I'd say the general quality in that position is better than it was previously.

All you see now is punch the ball, they are basically shot stoppers, ten a penny.

Coleman in particular has trouble collecting the ball, it often bounces off his chest.

Why hasn't this aspect of his game improved if we have goalkeeping coaches?

I'm not sure I agree that he's got a huge weakness there for someone who will still be adjusting to mens football but if a keeper (or any player) was experiencing difficulties with any area of their game, how would it improve without coaching and practice?

Why does a keeper need coaching to catch a ball, he can do this with anyone throwing or kicking a ball to him?

He collects the ball with a puffed out chest instead of cushioning the ball, is it so hard to perfect his handling techique?

Dunn is entirely to blame for the keeper situation.

He has changed them each time they make a mistake to the point where they are both keeping with nerves shot to bits.

He has 2 choices -

1/ Select a keeper and stick with him.

2/ Get somebody in on loan.

Just a pity we cant get managers in on loan !!!!

We've already proven this to be nonsense, do keep up.

The club had 2 very good keepers for our level in Bouzanis and Cisak , wonderboy let them both go ......not been solved since.

I think that will be connected to their performance and attitude off the pitch, rather than on it. I know a member of the staff making that decision wanted one to stay but he was presumably out-voted by more senior members of the team.

You are right though, both are better than any keeper we've had since, apart from IMHO Oxley, who wasn't ours.
