  1. Lol - love it - v refreshing to see pleasant and humorous banter on here between BP and Ritchie instead of everyone bitching all the time.
  2. Very strange times we live in, Lee. Gay old men can have sexual relations with their teen lovers and millions of people say nothing. Many in this weird world we live in actually celebrate it! Go and look at the story around a certain TV presenter - people fawning over him. Makes me physically sick. Nothing wrong with what Grovesy did at all - the age gap wasn't that big. She married Les Chapman later - does that make him dodgy too? My final word on the subject.
  3. Yes remember that 1-0 win very well. First time I had seen "skinhead girls" with bovver boots on (Leicester fans) and remember the Leicester fans (probably the girls!) charging at the Latics fans in the station after the match.
  4. How disrespectful. The second time recently that fans off here have talked ill of former players (and superb ones at that) who have died (the other was some cheap shots at Andy Goram). To call someone a "nonce" when they broke no laws whatsoever is just so wrong.
  5. Agree - his facial features and skin colour indicated mixed race heritage (or always did to me). And without doubt, the most skillful Latics player I have ever had the pleasure of watching - and by some distance. We've had some great and exciting players for sure but he stands head and shoulders above all others in my view. I am, however, not old enough to have witnessed Bobby Johnstone play for Latics. One or two who did, say he was "on a different planet" (different type of player to Grovesy obviously).
  6. There's one thing (generally) that's been pretty consistent about the Oldham paying footballing public over the years. If Latics get off to a bad start to the season, "home" attendance dwindles pretty rapidy to the "hardcore" level and it takes a long time to get people back. There is an amazing feelgood factor for obvious reasons, at the moment, and I just hope and pray that the friendlies are not a true reflection of what is to come.
  7. No thanks,BP - call me a traditionalist but Mouldy Old Dough belting out, with everyone's hands clapping above their heads to the instrumental bit will guarantee a few tears shed from me!
  8. Yes and Mr Brierley was, of course, Chairman of Latics back in the day and, I think, heavily involved in JW Lees Brewery.
  9. Nothing personal at all, Glossop but this made me giggle. There's been "eff all" rational going on at BP for a long time, so why must there be any rationale behind pursuing this? It's all a charade and it just hammers more nails in our coffin - there's precious little space left for any more nails.
  10. He's 33 years old next birthday, unsworth - not sure what the medical/injury issues are with him but sincerely wish him all the best.
  11. Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council My memory fades but their treatment of, and broken promises to, Oldham Rugby were shameful. Different councils over many years have squandered literally £ tens of millions of taxpayer's money on various hair-brained schemes. Now, wouldn't it be a fantastic asset for the borough if they were to fund either a) BP or b) a new stadium for use of Oldham Athletic, Oldham Rugby AND THE COMMUNITY. Perhaps this is where a major chunk of effort should be expended? Approached properly, this should be a relatively easy "sell" to the council i.e. not just slagging them off (as we always tend to do!) but preparing a professional, outline "vision" document to persuade them that this really would be a superb asset for the borough as a whole. Funding guaranteed - all our ground problems gone in a flash.
  12. First coined in the English Civil War when Royalist prisoners were literally "sent to Coventry". The city was strongly Parliamentarian and, therefore, nobody would speak to the Royalists - they were completely shunned.
  13. Latics and Hibs "casuals" had actually formed quite a decent friendship during an Isle of Man pre-season tournament in the Royle era. However, when they came to BP for said pre-season friendly, it did kick off somewhat. To be fair, Hibs "got done" (you were obviously unlucky) by our lot and, thereafter, relations deteriorated. There was actually a mass brawl pre-arranged with Hibs when Latics played Everton away in the cup many years later (Latics and Everton were getting together to meet the Hibs casuals). It was prevented by police intercepting the Hibs' train headed south for Warrington. Football violence was serious stuff in those days!
  14. Very eloquent and a nice fella. Exactly the type of person who would make a great ambassador for the club and the town; and let's be honest, both need some positivity and good representation after decades in the doldrums.
  15. Gets me v frustrated reading all this. I went out of my way to meet twice with directors of the Trust in the past (simply as a concerned fan - not a Trust member). Amongst issues discussed were many people's view that the 3% shareholding was a millstone around their neck and they should take the opportunity to sell it to AL during his purchase. At that point there was goodwill with the fans and there would have been financial benefit payable (even if only as an initial gesture of goodwill from a new owner to the fans reps). In time, that opportunity was lost and the 3% became worthless financially (and in any other way tbh). I also said that the Trust should explore a merger with FLG and PTB to form a fans' alliance (i.e. on the basis that we simply didn't have the fan base to run anything other than one true fans' group). Together stronger and all that. I was highly critical of the Trust's u-turn as highlighted in Lee Sinnot's post - it confirmed to me (and many I spoke to) that they had no effective and strong leadership. The brutal fact is that the Trust has proven itself to be spineless and utterly ineffective and, I`m sorry, but the absolute stubborness of continually trying to convince people of the benefit of its 3% shareholding is now nothing but laughable. The Trust (as an organisation) has let the fans down very badly and has no credibility whatsoever in the eyes of anyone with half a brain. How many more times does history have to repeat itself before people realise that?
  16. Bob - I possess a signed copy of a book by an Oldham fella, "Victorian Dumps - Paperweights, Mantel Ornaments, Doorstops & Whimsies 1820-1914". I`m also an interesting and informative dinner party conversationalist
  17. Lol - shows how much I know about "social media" and IT terms generally - I meant Facebook, Twatter etc.
  18. yarddog - I am on your side - I would just hate to see a decent genuine fan (any one of many) made an example of in the courts for writing something which might be classed as defamation. It's a minefield and I`ve witnessed such a legal action before. It really can ruin someone's life.
  19. Billy - I think a lot of fans appreciate your candid tweets (or whatever they were lol - I`m not on any social media). Just a few words of advice - be very careful what you write - if certain people are as poisonous as many claim, then it would not surprise me if one/all of them "went for the jugular" (of someone) via the courts around alleged defamation once they thought they had sufficient evidence.
  20. Meanwhile...... the better replacement player in midfield is part of a team, theoretically, just 5 points from non-league football.
  21. Used correctly, Fane is a very useful asset in leagues 1 and 2. Excellent at breaking up play and a great engine on him. I know he divides people on opinion, possibly more than anyone else but I remember saying to Mr Corney that he would play in the Championship one day. When he first came he was a revelation and made some great gut busting runs forward. Retreating defenders could not cope with his power striding forward. I`m conviced that was (very quickly) "coached out" of him. Time will tell but I will watch with interest. I`ll go and put my tin hat on now.
  22. Well, I recall commenting a while ago on some press/club website (can't remember which) release she had done - which was embarrasingly amateurish. If staff are witnessing such drivel, day in day out it's not surprising that someone would blow a fuse one day.
  23. My Bolton supporting cousin went to watch them get hammered at Rotherham yesterday. He said Freddie Ladapo, for them, was unplayable. Quick, strong, scored 2 and hit the woodwork twice apparently.
