  1. He's a 6'2" 22 yr old centre forward with 100 league games behind him. If we're having to teach him how to head a ball is that not a sign that he's developing a bit slowly to be spearheading our fight against relegation? (assuming we start putting up a fight against relegation some time soon)
  2. Didn't think the ref was that bad. He booked the guy for the challenge on Kelly and I'm not so sure it was a clear red - Kelly jumped up to avoid it so maybe made it look worse. Actually thought the worst decision was to give a free kick for us when Winchester bounced off Leon Clarke. Summed up (one of the many things) what's wrong with our weak team but we got a free kick for it.
  3. Is it still possible (if it ever was) for an appeal to "backfire" and for the FA to decide to extend the ban? Cunning plan Mr Sheridan.
  4. In view of this signing there's only one answer to the Boss CB dilemma. On a more serious note, this is surely worth the risk isn't it? It might be my memory playing tricks, but we've re-signed the person who had the most influence over any Latics team in the last 10 years. That team in Shez's first season is the last one that had my total confidence and Wellens was the heartbeat of that side. If he's lost it then, oh well, we're hardly worse off than if we'd not given it a try. If he's still got something then he could lead us out of the bottom 4. Maybe even to the dizzy heights of 15th.
  5. Does this game not end after Ellis Plummer?! No? Ok, Dele Adebola.
  6. Not sure about some of the decisions today from the referee but crazy stuff from Burn. He went in for about 3 or 4 challenges he didn't need to in quick succession after the point it was clear he was on the thin ice which just made a red card inevitable. So stupid - should have kept his head and let the game calm down. Even Connor Brown would have seen that coming.
  7. Somewhere in one of these threads someone asked about our record with/without Holden. Last season in the league our average points and goals per game were: 16 games without Holden (1.56 points, 1.4 scored, 1.1 conceded) 15 games with Holden as coach (1.2 points, 1.2 scored, 1.7 conceded) 15 games with Holden as manager (0.93 points, 0.9 scored, 1.5 conceded) This season the record is 0.88 points, 0.8 scored, 1.5 conceded. Over the last few years: Sheridan: 1.55 points, 1.4 scored, 1.1 conceded Penney: 1.16 points, 0.9 scored, 1.2 conceded Dickov: 1.12 points, 1.1 scored, 1.4 conceded Johnson: 1.31 points, 1.2 scored, 1.3 conceded
  8. How are we defining "sitter"? Much as I like him, I think that for Croft a "sitter" has to be where he has the ball at his feet one yard from goal, he's the only player on the pitch and the opposition's entire defence and keeper are queuing for a pie in the RRE.
  9. Time for an OWTB poll? Best footballer never to play a competitive game for Oldham: Maradona, Messi or Green.
  10. Exactly the same for me if it works. If the ref is alert then I'd stick Turner on the bench and try again at the start of the 2nd half. Only other thought is on Dunn. Clearly the best footballer at the club but is it worth easing him in until he's fit given that bringing him on for the last 30 mins against a tiring defence could be effective. Until he's fully fit, maybe Winchester/Green in that role (again, try both if we can get away with it - together they're about the same size as Dunn anyway).
  11. Yeovil, 3 at the back and 0-3 at half time. LJ's finest tactical (three quarters of an) hour.
  12. Thought our system didn't help him at the start. He was sitting deep on his own with Jones and Winchester pushing wide and Philliskirk pushed fairly high if he was meant to be playing centre mid. We seemed to tighten it up after that and he was able to show what he's there for without being overrun. Agree with above - maybe not destined for greatness but he looks like he's got enough to have a decent career.

  14. Because I'm bored, or sad, or perhaps more likely both, I've been scrolling back through the previous new manager threads on here - even one that lasted only hours between Shez and Joe. There's one common theme that we seem to have missed this time round. Where is Jim Gannon these days?
  15. I've never felt comfortable with the greedy bastard chants, even with Porter. Changing jobs for more money is just a normal fact of life, I'm sure we've all done it. If I was a player and fans were chanting "one greedy bastard" at me I'd just shrug my shoulders and think "you'd do the same". Most returning players/managers ought to be met with indifference or applause. Is it not just where they've apparently given assurances to the club that they won't do something (Porter) or where they've given every impression that they're in it for a long term "project" whilst apparently applying for any job going (Johnson) that some more targeted chants are appropriate?
  16. If it was John there would be no point having anyone else in the poll.
  17. Dowie was travelling from London to Manchester at tea time yesterday and would have arrived at about the time that Corney should have been finishing his GMR interview. On the basis that 2+2=5, this means that he was in town for a face to face meeting to discuss the job. He does seem to be back in London again today for Sky so there must have been a reason for the journey. Of course, if his family is still living up here he could have just have been going home, but at least it's an actual spotting of a potential manager (albeit 10 miles away from BP).
  18. At least if they're under contract we get a fee. However disclosed, or otherwise, it might be. If we've got players who are in demand then realistically the choices are to allow them to leave for free or to sell them. In our current state there isn't much of an option to keep those players if they want to leave.
  19. As someone said, got to give credit to LJ for the tactics from the start today, particularly as we've pointed out in the past when he's got it wrong ("look daddy, I can play with 3 at the back" being the classic example). Swindon like to pass the ball around and have a keeper who clearly thinks he should be playing centre mid. As a result, our tactic of pressing them high and fast from the start with Wilkinson and Jones in particular paid dividends. We seemed to start the game with Jones up front and Forte, Mellis and Winchester behind from left to right - presumably a plan from LJ to use Jones's energy to press the defence? Second half dropping off and defending was more forgivable tonight than it has been when defending a lead against mediocre opposition in the past. I'm not sure whether it was so much a tactic tonight; more that Swindon are just better than us and constantly pushed us back (that's not being negative: however much we enjoyed tonight, they did look a class above anything else we've seen this year). Also, very good to see the whole team putting in a "Kelly" shift tonight. Tricky run coming up, we'll need more of that level of commitment.
  20. They could have had two second half, let's call that even.
  21. Just checked the website and it looks like no changes. You can buy tickets for the big section of the RRE. That wouldn't usually fill me with confidence but it does seem to be updated - for the Rochdale game you can't buy any RRE tickets. Not that it matters, by the sound of it we might all be able to fit in the small section of the RRE on Saturday anyway.
  22. There'll be a statement from the club confirming, won't there? Oh.
