Rennie went out of his way before the kick-off to go over to Hughes, shake his hand and have a few words with him. There were other instances during the game when they appeared to have a joke together. Then in the closing minutes when Hughes could have been booked, I believe that the rapport he had built up with Rennie avoided a yellow card.
